Difference Between Nonprofit and Charity

Humanitarian aid, as well as contributions, has impacted greatly in the wellness of the communities. Among parties involved in these activities include charities, nonprofit organizations as well as foundations. Although they carry out similar activities, they differ in several ways.

What is Nonprofit?

This is an organization that uses its income and profits for the organization’s main goal that supports the mission. This means that the profits gained do not in any way benefit the employees or the owners. If a nonprofit close, profits cannot be claimed by the group’s members or the owners, but are instead redistributed to a similar organization. Usually ran by volunteers and/or paid staff. Nonprofits may have religious, sporting, social, educational and scientific purposes, just to name a few.

Nonprofits do not have spending requirements, and can’t issue donations’ official receipts, hence do not receive tax credits. Examples of nonprofits include football clubs, festivals and disability educational centers.

What is Charity?

This is a type of nonprofit that engages in activities aimed at improving lives in the communities. It has strict guidelines for qualification and must be fully registered to be classified as a charity. A charity can issue donations’ official receipts for income tax deductions which allows them to receive tax credits. They, however, have set spending requirements.

Among other requirements include;

  • Must operate only for the benefit of the public
  • Must not be a political party, government entity or an individual
  • Must not engage in illegal activities
  • Must be formed for charitable purposes only
  • Must be a nonprofit organization
  • Must be fully registered

Charities can be private or private whereby public charities derive their funds from the public while private charities derive their funds from one source such as a corporation or one family. Among categories of charities include human rights, health, social welfare, environmental conservation, and education.
