Difference Between Catholic Bible and King James Bible

Catholic Bible vs. King James Bible

There has been a lot of confusion surrounding the Holy Bible that both Roman Catholic s and Protestants use, because of the varied versions that have been printed and distributed throughout the world today. It may be because of the never ending dispute between Catholics and Protestants on what should be and shouldn’t be included in the Christian Bible that lights the continuity of the said argument.

The Catholic Bible is actually the generic term for the Christian Bible. By nature, it includes the so-called Old and New Testaments. It includes the 5th century Latin Vulgate, which is primarily St. Jerome’s work.

Conversely, the King James Bible version is just one of the many versions of the Holy Book circulated throughout. Some of the other versions made or edited by Roman Catholics include: The Latin Vulgate itself, the Douay-Rheims Version, The Jerusalem Bible and the New American Bible, amongst many others.

At the dawn of the 17th century, the making of the King James Bible version was initiated by the English King James the First. It was said to have been completed around 1611. The King James Version (KJV) is regarded as one of the first English translations of the Catholic Bible, with the Great Bible and the Bishops Bible as its first two English predecessors. The KJV was translated or written with the use of the most original manuscripts in Hebrew and Greek. The problem with the translating process at that time was that the translators were mostly pure Englishmen, with limited knowledge of Hebrew. There were also a small number of texts to which their new version had to be based, including the Greek Textus Receptus for the New Testament and the Hebrew Masoteric for the Old Testament. Their translation also included the Apocrypha, although newer versions of such do not include the said books. Moreover, the scholars who were tasked by the king to do the translation asked for little or no help from anyone in translating the Catholic Bible. The result is a book that contained lots of errors. No wonder there has been many revised versions of this English Bible, named the New King James Version.

Overall, no matter what Bible version you are reading, more or less the message remains the same. Even if the phrasing and wordings are somewhat altered, almost all Bible versions, including the KJV, tells of the same message about God. All in all:

1. The Catholic Bible is a more generic term for the Holy Bible.

2. The KJV is just one of the many other versions of the Holy Bible.

  1. Go back to the Hebrew Bible and There starts the INSPIRED WORD OF GOD. THE NT IS A CONTINUATION OF THE INSPIRED WORD OF GOD. All the bibles, with the exception of the removal of the 6 Deuteronocial books, are basically the same, take the NKJV which realistically says the same basic things as the KJV. only the “thy, thee, changed to you, your. The BASE STAYED THE SAME. MOST EDITIONS ARE EDITED FOR THIS REASON, MAKING IT EASIER FOR THE READER, THE INSPIRED WORD IS THE SAME FOR ALL THE BOOKS, Again except the removal of the Deuteronocial which in my opinion is Blasphemous.

    • Robert Heath, has anyone sent you a Bible yet? I am just an individual who found this website tonight, as part of a personal study. I see your post at the bottom of the page. I would like to send you one, if you don’t have one yet. Let me know, at scschicksr@gmail.com
      Blessings.

  3. @Kim 20dec17: Your appeal to study is admirable: however you do not seem to have got as far as you might. There are a large number of false assertions in what you write – just to take a trivial one, you say, ‘The word “Jew” not come into existence until the year 1775 A.D.’ – but actually it is based on the Old English Iudeas, and in modern English the word is found from around 1275 on in forms such as Gyv, Iuu, Iew, &c. (It stems from the Latin Iudeaus, corresponding to Hebrew y’hudah, and referring originally to a Hebrew of the kingdom of Judeah.)

More generally, the King James’ translators included many scholars of ancient languages, including Latin and Hebrew – but also of Greek, which is, of course, the language of the New Testament, although you seem unaware of this. (And Jamestown was founded by a joint stock company, not by King James, and initially did not involve slavery – again, you need to study history more closely.). I suggest you start with my post of October 16th, which you will find at the end of the comments, for some reason, and then:
On the King James version, cf Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_James_Version#Translation_committees

  4. I’m looking into getting a Bible. I was baptized Catholic. I’ve never been a church goer. But now in my 60s I would to start. I’m confused on which bible to get. Thank you for any help.

    • Hi June,
So glad to hear of your interest. Best place to go? Your nearest Catholic Church. Ask to speak with someone who is in charge of their Adult Faith programs (RCIA) and they will gladly help you in obtain a Catholic Bible. I’d highly recommend asking for information on RCIA as well while you are there. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adult) is for everyone who is curious to know more about the Catholic faith (confirmed Catholics included) and really help to better understand the complexities and beauty of Catholism. God Bless you on your journey and welcome home!

    • Be careful about any Bible prepared by those with a doctrinal axe to grind, like the Catholics, the Calvinists, and the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Their Bibles are stilted towards their doctrinal beliefs, (and you can’t tell which are true by reading them.)

The KJV will not steer you wrong. It contains information the others don’t and tells you when they are adding words for clarity, (the italics.) The Thee/Thou, and You/Ye are there for a reason, as well as the “eths” suffix endings, (which stand for a Greek verb tense that English doesn’t have.)

It’s EXTREMELY accurate, and has stood the test of time, (and contrary to the OP, has not been revised at all, but merely updated with modern spelling – the last time in 1769.)

And please start your Bible reading in the third chapter of John, where Jesus tells the life-long Catholic Priest that unless he is Born Again, he cannot see or enter the Kingdom of Heaven. (Which is a strange thing to say, if he’s already a Priest.)

Jesus would like to save you, all by Himself. (If you add to Jesus, you make Him less.) If you say you need to do something to save yourself, then YOU are your savior.

“But to him that worketh not, but trusteth in Him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.”

That means instead of trying to make yourself good enough for God, (good luck with that, BTW,) you simply repent of that and accept Jesus instead. A one for one.

And let Him have the honor of saving you, all by Himself.

      • How is Jesus talking to a Catholic priest in John chapter 3 if the Catholic Church was not established until after His death? What in John 3 says that?

      • Thank you! I was beginning to wonder if anyone even knew the truth. Catholics are not Christians – Christians are not Catholics. Thank you for your response which was put together very well, enough for a small child to understand.

        • I’m glad Tina, you are sitting on the seat of judgement.

        • Wrong..Catholics were the first Christians we wrote the Bible. We have been around for 2000 years. Peter ( which means Rock) is who Jesus built His Church upon. It’s all in the Bible and thats the truth

        • One the contrary. The Catholic fairh is Christian. If Catholicism is not Christian, then why is the King James Bible a TRANSLATION of the Catholic Bible?

        • Anyone who believes in Jesus CHRIST is a Christian. Therefore, Catholics are Christ ians, as they believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Don’t get it twisted. Your statement is just ignorant. Ignorance is a lack of true knowledge. Educate yourself.

        • Catholics are the first Christians. They are called Catholics by St Ignatius of Antioch to describe the universality of their mission.

      • I was trying to figure out which Bible was right for me. I was raised Southern Baptist & always thought KJV was the right version. Our new young pastor says any are good, but I have noticed the meaning is changed with the wording.
Thank you for helping me to realize KJV
        the right bible

      • First of all you say that he was catholic. Not true he was a pharisees. Second of all did you read john 3:15 and john 3:18 . Why do people constantly pick on the Catholic church when we follow what Jesus taught us to the best of our ability. Both verses state ” we are saved if we believe in Jesus Christ as our Saviour. If you are a follower of Jesus, why is it that , you say some people are saved that believe in Jesus and try to follow His teachings and others aren’t who also follow Jesus and His teachings. If you Truly believe Jesus is Lord and try to follow His teachings to the best of your ability, you are saved… Also Luke 9:49-50. We are all followers of the same Christ Jesus

      • The are two points in seperate posts that need to be addressed: first-All Catholics are Christians while not all Christians are Catholic. Catholicism (Roman & Othodox) are merely different ‘flavors’ of Christianity as are the mainstream Protestants (Baptists, Lutheran, etc).

As far as slanted translations of the bible look no further than the previously mentioned New World Translation Of The Holy Scriptures published by the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society (AKA Jehovah’s Witnesses). All one needs to look at is John 1:1 (as a start).

    • If you were baptized Catholic, then you are on the right track. If you want the truth I would recommend the Jerusalem Bible. But don’t take my word for.Catholicism which means universal is 2000 years old started by Jesus Himself. Simon Peter (Peter, which means Rock) was our first Pope. Just do your research and decide for yourself.

    • Based on the findings of the Dead See Scrolls, the King James Version is the one that matched most accurately…99% accuracy. A few differences were in punctuation. For example when Jesus said to the thief on the cross, “I tell you, today You shall be with Me in Paradise.” It should read, “I tell you today, “You shall be with Me in paradise.” Jesus did not go to paradise that day. He went to the grave. On the third day, He rose and stayed on earth for 40 days before ascending. The Catholic Bible was written later, and the Ten Commandments were changed by the Catholic church. Most specifically, they subtracted the 2nd commandment about not making any graven images, moved the 4th commandment and made it tbe 3rd, changing it from 89 words on keeping the seventh day Sabbath holy to 8 words on keeping the Lords day holy and claiming that it was the 1st days of the week. They openly admit changing the day themselves. Nowhere in the Bible can Sunday be found. Constantine changed it so that the pagans would join the Catholic church because they worshipped the pagan sun god. This Sunday worship is actually a counterfeit of the true Seventh day Sabbath. There are many other versions that have not made changes that actually change the meanings, such as the New King James Version, the New American Standard Version and others that I am not as much familiar with. I hope this helps and if you ask God for truth He will give it to you. Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life; no man comes to the Father but by Me.” He is the only one who paid the price for our sins by Shedding His innocent blood for us. He is the only One who has earned the right to forgive sins. Anyone else claiming that right is lying. They crucified Jesus because He said He was God and He forgave sins, calling it blasphemy. Except Jesus really was and still is the true God according to the Bible that hasn’t been changed.

    • The parallel bible
It has king james, new living translation i believe
NIV NEW INTERNARION VERSION and another.Start reading at the Gospel of st john.Read slow one verse at a time and ask Jesus to open the eyes of your understandig and give thanks for every new thing you see and learn about Jesus.Read only a few verses or a verse a day. This is the bread you pray about in the our Father( The Lords prayer). Think on that verse till you know it by heart.Jesus was God but also a Jew of the tribe of Judah his own people .God loves you! I know this will help you

  5. The King used like 40+ scholar’s. I think it was 46 but not positive. One scholar alone spoke over 14 languages. They spent like 6 years. I’d recommend someone else rewrite this wiki answer! Obviously whoever wrote it didn’t do any reaserch

    • No it was actually, 52 scholars, fluent in Greek and Hebrew, which took 7 years to the Greek and Hebrew texts to translate and create.
      A Brother in Christ
      John

  6. This is false difference. Look at the original King James /Authorised Version 1611 – it’s like the catholic version!

    • Alif, No the King James is not like the Catholic Bible. For example, God wrote the ten Commandments in stone with His own FINGER. The Catholic church admits they changed them. They also added books to the Scriptures. In Revelation 22 verses 18 and 19 Jesus says if anyone adds to or takes away from the prophecy of this book [Revelation], the plagues that are written in it shall be added unto him.

      • No. Protestant bible came because there already was an original Bible. It came after. This King James changed the original to accomodate his urge to divorce. So he really did something the original (Catholic) bible says “to not take out” of holy scriptures…. Holy Catholic Church was around WITH THE original bible for over 1,500 yrs until a KING JAMES decided to take out and add to this ORIGINAL HOLY BOOK. I follow what Christ left… I dont follow a KING JAMES opinions or whims…. I wanna read what God left us ORIGINALLY. Read historical facts.
