Difference Between Knowledge and Wisdom

libraryKnowledge vs Wisdom
Knowledge is a noun that refers to the information, understanding and skills that you gain through education or experience. It refers to the hard facts and the data that can be available to anyone if he has the right resources. For example, you can have practical, medical or scientific knowledge. You can also say that someone has a wide knowledge of, for example, the taxation system.

Wisdom, on the other hand, is a noun that refers to the ability to make sensible decisions and give good advice because of the experience and knowledge that you have. Someone may have all the knowledge about a subject but may not have the wisdom to utilize this knowledge properly to be able to act in a sensible manner! That is why they say you can gain knowledge by educating yourself but you can gain wisdom only by experience.

Knowledge also refers to the state of knowing about a particular fact or situation. For example, she sent the letter without my knowledge or the film was made with the King’s full knowledge and approval. Knowledge can also be used as an idiom . For example, something can be common or public knowledge implying that everyone in a particular group or community knows about it. For example, you can say someone’s dishonesty was common knowledge in the club.

Wisdom can also be used as referring to the sensibility of doing something. For example, you can say I question the wisdom of giving a child so much money. Wisdom also refers to the knowledge that a society or culture has gained over a long period of time. For example, the wisdom of the Native American people.

Wisdom when used in the phrase ‘conventional wisdom’ refers to the collective belief or view that a people or society can have.

  1. Dear Sir/Madam,

It was interesting to visit your website: http://www.differencebetwen.net.

I was particularly interested in differences between Knowledge and Education, and Knowledge and Wisdom. I read your both the articles and feel that they are rather casual.

In your difference between knowledge and wisdom, you emphasize wisdom as based on experience to make senseable decision. I can tell you that somebody with all his life-long experience and also with relevant knowledge of the subject, may not be able to make a good judgement.

While you are partly true in making experience as a condition for wisdom, I feel ‘wisdom’ is God-gifted – it is a faculty which could be endowed to someone even without proper schooling and education, let alone knowledge of the facts. I need not go into its discussion and I feel I should leave this comment with you to reflect, ponder over so that wisdom dawnes on you and lead you to producing still better pieces of wisdom which you are doling out through your interesting website. I am always available adn glad to share my knowledge and wisdom with you.

I hope I am not trying to aggrandize my self – I just thought of leaving a quick comment off the cuff.

    Tahir

  2. Simple: Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing you don’t put them in fruit salad.

    • Excellent comment

    • that is known through experience…

    • Knowledge is acquired through experience and skills while wisdom is beyond this, its not even common ideal, its God-given(gifted)that’s why people go to school and work in super companies(experience) but are not the best leaders and are not even bothered about how other people live their lives, they dont care, bottom line,WISDOM is God -gifted n its a rare element in human life.

      • Wisdom has multiple definitions. The primary one is that it is the use of extrapolated information from the knowledge gained from experience. And the ability to extrapolate this information, which is a learn-able skill ganied and honed adjacent to knowledge in that experience.

Or you can blame it on god, as is easy for anything good or bad if you’re vague enough and don’t believe god intends people to do and learn things themselves.

    • Salad is fruit salad. The only non fruit in a standard one is lettuce and maybe carrot. Also tomato does not always mix poorly into a fruit salad.

Tomatoes are sweet and have a profile similar enough to substitute for a harder citrus.

  3. In my humble opinion, Knowledge is the process of knowing while wisdom is concerned with the application of knowledge in the best possible way.

  4. Knowledge is the best avaialable knowledge about a particular subject a person/individual have.
Wisdom on the other hand, refers to the mental ability of an individual which enables a person to make sensible judgement using his God Gifted skills.

  5. In my opinion, knowledge is something you’ve learnt through books etc.
    Wisdom is common sense

  6. According to my opinion and with the observation of previous comments
I conclude and or boldly say knowledge is an idea and or wisdom is the ability to use that idea
