Differences Between Arabic and Farsi

Arabic vs Farsi

As I walk along the road, I see many people of different races. Yes, seeing a lot of people from different countries doesn’t surprise me that much. Moving from a certain country to another country seems like a Facebook or Twitter trend. Riding a plane is already like riding a bicycle nowadays. The distance is not really considered. As long as you get to your dream country, you can do anything. Unlike before, if you are from a foreign country, all the eyes of the people are set upon you. That is normal because you are different. You have a different appearance by either your skin, eye color, or an unusual accent.

I am a watcher. I like observing different people. I particularly like their accent. I don’t know whether I will laugh or not, but I find other people’s accents amusing. On my way home, I bumped into a stranger with an Arabic accent, or maybe a Farsi accent. I don’t know that much about the two. The way that person talks is obviously not American. So when I reached my house, I grabbed my laptop and searched for the differences between Arabic and Farsi. Yes, my addiction to understanding languages and accents is exceptional. But I am not sure whether my knowledge about languages and accents is also accurate; I just love to fill my curiosity.

My research says that more than 220 million people are speaking the Arabic language. This language is widely used in the Middle East and in some African regions. If you have the desire to learn this language, you need to undergo several years of schooling since this is a difficult one to understand, especially at advanced levels. If you want to learn only the basics, you can buy or read a simple guide on how to speak Arabic.

Sounding Arabic is quite easy if you follow these special rules. The letter “P” sound like a “B” because Arabs have difficulties on pronouncing “P.” The word “pick” sounds like “bick” when spoken in Arabic. The letter “R” in the Arabic alphabet is pronounced as a soft letter “D.” You just roll your tongue to make the sound. However, overdoing it will make you sound Spanish. Replace the “th” sounds with “s” or “z.” Say “Habby Birsday” to the person who is celebrating his birthday. Speak every syllable with all your heart since Arabs love to distinctly differentiate their language from other languages. And when you think you’re out of words, say “yanni” not “um.” That is the Arabic way of speaking.

Let us now learn Farsi. Farsi is known as the Persian language. In the Iranian branch of the Indo-Iranian languages, Farsi is the most widely spoken language. It is the mother language of Iran (Persia). It is also spoken in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and the Pamir Mountain regions.

To sound Persian, you should move your mouth a lot. You have to speak from the throat. Unlike  English, from their point of view, we sound nasal. So let us speak and sound from the throat. “Th” sounds have no place in Farsi. Make the “th” sound like a hard “t” or an “s” sound. The letter “H” is also left out! If you want to say you’re happy, say, “I’m appy.” Make your “W” a “V.” If you’re going to ask “why,” “I don’t know ‘vhy.’” When thinking of the right words to say, use plenty of “eh” and “uh,” not “yanni!”

Summary:

  1. Arabic is to the Middle East and Africa what Farsi is to Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and the Pamir Mountain regions.

  2. When thinking of the right words to say, use “yanni” in Arabic. Use “eh” and “uh” in Farsi.

  3. Be it Arabic or Farsi, always emphasize your every syllable to copy their accent.

there is many arabic words which are used in persian literature and poetry ( like hafez, mowlana, saadi, shams tabrizi . . .).

there is an interesting thing between these languages:
electricity in arabic is called “kahroba کهربا” which is a full persian word, and in persian is called “bargh برق” which is a full arabic word!

  2. Awesome post! I felt identified with you from the beginning and I ended up reading everything!!

  3. H actually IS pronounced in persian, trust me I’m iranian 🙂
It’s romance languages (french, italian,…) that are guilty of this crime 😉
