Difference Between Friend and Girlfriend

Friend vs Girlfriend

A friend is defined as a person who is known to someone and knows him well too, someone who treats the same person with affection and loyalty. A friend is always there through sadness and happiness supporting someone in all undertakings. It is a close association with another person who has the best intentions for the other, showing sympathy as well as empathy through understanding and compassion and honesty in everything especially in things where others cannot tell the truth.

True friends trust each other, and they find joy in each other’s company. They are able to show who they really are to each other. Here are some of the people that one can call friends: acquaintances, family friends, pen pals, colleagues, allies, online friends, and one can even have imaginary friends, but the one that is really a true friend is one’s best friend.

Friends can either be a man or a woman or a girl or a boy in which case they are called boyfriends or girlfriends. A girlfriend is just that, a friend who is a girl. It can be a platonic relationship or a romantic relationship. It is used to refer to the girl or woman with whom one is dating and who one may or may not be engaged to. The relationship is romantic and exclusive, sharing it with one special girl, whereas anyone can have as many friends as possible.

A girlfriend is a female partner in a romantic relationship. For young males, having a girlfriend is a sign of status and is considered a milestone in his growth towards adulthood. To have a girlfriend does not necessarily lead to getting married nor does it have to be a sexual relationship. The physical contact that one shares between a friend and a girlfriend is on a different level. One may hug or kiss a friend, but it is different from the way one touches, hugs, or kisses a girlfriend which is more intimate and personal.

What distinguishes a friend from a girlfriend is that with a girlfriend one has plans for the future which he expects to spend with her. With friends, who can either be males or females, there are no such plans, and they are content with enjoying shared activities. The word “friend” comes from the Old English word “freond” which means “friend” and was first used before the 10th century while the word “girlfriend” was first used to refer to a man’s sweetheart in 1922.

Summary:

1.A friend is a male or female acquaintance while a girlfriend is a female for whom one has romantic feelings.
2.A friend is someone whom one shares a platonic relationship with while a girlfriend is someone with whom one shares a romantic relationship.
3.A girlfriend is someone with whom one plans to share his future with while there are no such plans for friends.
4.The physical contact between friends is very casual with a hug, a kiss, or a pat on the back while physical contact with a girlfriend is more intimate.
