Difference Between Guys and Men

Guys vs Men

“Guys” and “men” are just two labels or categories for the adult male population. Both terms carry a certain viewpoint and connotation to each label.

The label or the categorization of an adult male is due to the approach and lifestyle that a certain adult male projects and embodies. Another factor is the prescribed gender roles that society prescribes onto its members. In this case, society takes into view the character or the maturity of a certain adult male. Also, the certain adult male is also seen whether he exceeds certain expectations and responsibilities or not.

Another entity who uses these terminologies is women. Women often describe their male relations or partners with these labels. Depending on the relationship, women often also use these terms as descriptions of the status and depth of their relationship. In terms of romantic partners, it is often a hint whether the said male has the willingness to commit which says something about the character of the adult male as a prospective mate.

An adult male who is characterized as a “guy” is characterized as an adult male which is lacking in maturity and certain viewpoints as a male adult. Guys are often described as adult men who didn’t “grow up” to be men. Most of them are carefree, laid-back, flamboyant, and flashy, and often shy away from committed relationships and other heavy responsibilities. Though they are considered to be full of potential and possibility, “guys” often stay with their attitude.

“Guys” are also considered to be more charming and superficial. There is also the connotation of instability, indecisiveness, less responsibility, discipline, expectation, and commitment. Another characteristic of “guys” is their point of view. Most are concerned about the present time only and not about the future. They are also vulnerable to excitement, fun, pleasure, instincts, and urges.

On the other hand, a “man” is an adult male who fits into the traditional image of an adult male. A “man” is expected to be a pillar of support and strength to his peers and family as well as a person with desirable traits. These desirable traits often include respectful, hard-working, and decisive.

A “man” is someone who is stable with good character traits like: integrity, family-oriented, focused, responsible, disciplined, righteous, committed, loyal, dedicated, resourceful, careful in many aspects, dependable, independent, respectful, confident, self-controlled, persevering, humility, and polite.

A “man” is also a man who takes charge and has a goal in mind. The present time and future endeavors are equally important to this type of adult male. Succinctly, a “man” is a role model, an amiable male, and a person with substance.
Both labels are not exact and are usually idealistic in context. However, the description is usually used to characterize the majority or the overall description of an adult male. This becomes the set criteria for society or women to decide whether a certain adult male is a “guy” or a “man.”

Summary:

1.Both “guy” and “man” are terms that serve as labels for the outlook or overall assessment of a particular adult male. 2.The terms’ denotative aspects basically mean a human adult male, but connotatively they derive a lot of meaning from the different perspectives of people.
3.A “guy” is seen as an adult male who refuses to embody maturity and all that it entails like responsibility, commitment, and a clear goal. The “man,” on the other hand, is the exact opposite attitude and vision of a “guy.”
4.A “man” fits the ideological and traditional view of how an adult male should behave and embodiment. The “man” attitude is often what is prescribed or expected from every adult male in society.
5.A “guy” exemplifies possibilities or potential while a “man” exhibits stability, security, and commitment.
6.Women often like “guys” for fun and variety, but they would usually settle for a “man” as a lifelong partner.

  1. Perhaps this is just happening in the Mid-West (Nebraska) but often when we go out to eat with a group (men and women) the college age server, usually a young woman, will refer to everyone at our table as “guys.” As “would you guys like to start out with . . . ?” I don’t especially like it but I hear it often. It get the feeling that this is the way they address their peers and are comfortable talking to us that way. In this sense “guys” is used to mean “you all” regardless of gender.
