Difference Between game and sport

sport-gameSport vs Game
People often take game and sport as to be the same one. However, game and sport are entirely different. A game involves more than one person and a sport pertains to only an individual’s skills and performance.

A physical activity, Sport is carried out under an agreed set of rules. Sport is related to recreational purpose, either for self-enjoyment or competition or for both. A game is also for recreational activities and it involves one or more players. Played on the basis of a set of rules, a game is defined as a goal that the players try to achieve. As like sport, game is also played for enjoyment.

Sport is an activity or activities where the material capabilities of the sportsperson are looked upon. In a sport, it is the sportsperson or the individual who determines the outcome. Well, an individual’s talent does not determine a game. It is the entire performance of the players that determines the winner in a game. An individual’s skill or performance, though has much significance, does not count much in a game; it is only the coordination and team spirit that leads the game.

A person participating in a sport is called as athlete or a sports person. A person who participates in a game is known as player.

When a game relies on strategy, sport is based on individual performances and luck.

In a sport, the athlete can take independent decisions, but a player cannot take such independent decisions in a game. A decision is taken at a game collectively among two or more players.

Another difference between sport and game is that the former is based on physical energy and the later is based on mental strength. Sport is played with a view of competition in mind while game is played with a friendly attitude.

One can come across more professionalism in sport than the game. In a sport, the athlete or sports person is expected to show good sportsmanship and also have high standards of conduct like respecting the opponents and the officials. But in a game, an individual may not deliver such character. In game, the performance of the whole team is taken into account.

Sport is organized and competitive. It also requires commitment and fair play. An athlete or a sports person always gain popularity and maintains a name for his skills. But in a game, it is not the individual who gains popularity but it is the entire team that carves out a niche.

Summary
1. Sport involves individual skills. In game, it is the collective responsibility of a team
2. Sport is based on physical energy and game based on mental strength.
3. Game relies on strategy, sport is based on individual performances and luck.
4. Sport is an activity or activities where the material capabilities of the sportsperson are looked upon. It is the entire performance of the players that determines the winner in a game.

      • The difference is more simple than stated in this piece; a game (of skill) is performed to attain a ‘win’ with as many participants as desired. A sport distinguishes itself by requiring an element of defense…in sports you can STOP your opponent…

        • That’s the dumbest….In most games you can stop your opponent too. In a game of soccer I can tackle you. In a game of dota I kill you.

What about a marathon. Is that a game? no? Then why can’t you stop me? Can you stop me from cliffdiving? Isn’t that a sport? Can you stop me from cycling up a hill in tour de france? Or is cycling 300km a day a game?

What about tennis? Sport or game? both? can you stop me? nope.

  5. Both sport and game are used in context to a physical activity. However the main difference between sport and game is in its grammatical usage.

Sport is used as a noun. So we say “X is a sport”.
Game is used as verb clause. So we say “To play a game of X”

As per the above rule, the correct usage is –

    1) Cricket is a sport.
    2) Football is a sport.
    3) Tennis is a sport.

    1) Let’s play a game of cricket.
    2) Let’s play a game of football.
    3) Let’s play a game of tennis.

    Incorrect usage –

    1) Let’s play a sport of cricket.
    2) Let’s play a sport of tennis.
    3) Football is a game.
    4) Cricket is a game.

    • That i believe really settles it.

    • “Incorrect usage –

      […]

      3) Football is a game.”

Football is actually a ball game, so no cigar.

But interesting observations. The original post, however, is horrendous, illogical, muddled, wrong on virtually everything. How could anybody not give that one star. It is complete disinformation.

  18. While Game and Sport are used to describe the same context, one is mostly a subset of the other but they are, for the most part, synonymous.

Sport can be considered as an activity performed by an individual requiring a certain level of skill or effort. Even team sports are the combination of individual effort.

Games are in general a competition either against other participants or against the likelihood of a given outcome.

Bowling is widely considered a sport but is often played by a single person. When multiple people compete to get the highest score, that is considered a game. Same with golf except they compete for the lowest score. Rules and mechanics don’t really play a part in defining one or the other.

So someone bowling alone can be considered as engaging in the sport of bowling, multiple people completing in the sport of bowling would be considered to be playing a game.

All things considered sports are defined by the proficiency of the person engaging in the activity. The outcome of that engagement will always be looked at as a competition to others. Competitions are mostly referred to as games.

So while technically you can have a sport without a game it is rare to have a game without a sport.

Now this will inevitably bring us to the conclusion that all endeavors that require skill can be considered a sport.

Is Poker a sport? I would conclude that Poker is a game and Cards is the Sport.

Is playing Video Games a sport? The Sport of video games could be considered ‘AI’ because while the player is trying to win the game by beating the programmed logic of the game, the programmer is trying to make it as difficult/enjoyable as possible.

As with everything there are exceptions. The ‘game’ Candyland, for instance, is seemingly pure luck. If I remember correctly there are no actual decisions to be made but rather just roll dice and see where fate takes you. I wonder if Candyland should even be called a game. So ‘games’ that consist of only luck (the random determination of some device like dice) might not actually be a Game.

Nearly every aspect of the human condition has been made into a competition and hence a sport.

Jeopardy game show … Trivia/Knowledge Sport … Schooling/Careers could be considered the same type of sport. Tests in school can be considered the games.

Hide and Seek … seemingly only a simple game but could be considered to be part of the sport of Avoidance/Detection or Stealth or War.

War … as distasteful as it may be to compare people killing each other to the sport of something like bowling, the premise is basically the same. The Sport of War consists or one or more Games of Battle. Neither strategy nor force individually will dictate the outcome but rather only both applied appropriately will result in the desired outcome. The similarities to all sports cannot be dismissed.

So in conclusion to this entirely too long-winded point of view, I will say that Game is the application of Sport in a competitive framework. Sport is encompassing activity with it given rules. The mechanics of the activity performed have nothing to do with whether it is a Sport or a Game but rather the context in which the Sport is engaged.
