Difference Between Hoarding and Laziness

It is quite common to find people living in houses that are messy and are piled up with loads of unimportant or useless things. Some people do not find it easy to get rid of things that they do no longer need and would rather keep them instead of giving them away or disposing them. This is the exact reason to find messy homes, bedrooms etc. where shelves are stacked up with numerous things that are of no use. Such sort of behaviour can be due to a number of characteristics of an individual. It is possible that this is the result of a person who likes to keep everything he/she has ever used due to some attachment they feel with those things. Similarly, it may even reflect an attitude whereby people never dispose things in the hope that the may need it sometime in the distant future. Then there are also people who are just lazy or are known to hoard.

Hoarding

The word meaning of hoarding merely reflects a behaviour of living beings whereby they (people or animals) accumulate food or any other item for that matter. This means that they collect more of a certain item than they need or sometimes than they will ever need! One of the main reasons that they do this is because that particular item is scarcely available. They therefore collect it more than they need so that they can serve their needs in the future. Some people might have another agenda of hoarding; they may accumulate something that is scarcely available or is expected to become scarcely available in the future so they can sell it at a profit later on when its supply decreases. People first buy some goods that are in shortage and are predicted to be further short; they then wait until the supply sufficiently drops and prices rise, and then sell the hoarded goods at huge profits. Furthermore, people may even hoard due to happenings of civil unrest or natural disasters after which there is a general expectation that necessary items will be in a very short supply. Hoarding may also be because people feel emotionally attached to their belongings and being separated from these may even cause them distress.

Laziness

Laziness or indolence is the behaviour whereby one avoids doing work despite having the ability to do it. It is a general disinclination to any sort of activity or exertion just because a person does not want to do a particular task. The causes of laziness, which is addressed as a psychological condition, could be many; some of these include fatigue, lack of sleep, tiredness, sleep disorders, depression etc.

Differences

To begin with, it must be pointed out that the results of hoarding and laziness might seem same as both result in lots of unused items being accumulated. However, both are different behaviours and have different causes. Laziness is a person’s personal condition whereas hoarding is a behaviour exhibited due to some prevailing conditions. The causes of laziness can be traced down to some unhealthy habit in an individual’s lifestyle whereas the reason for hoarding is usually hidden in the current economic situation.

Laziness is merely a characteristic of an individual who would rather relax than work. Hoarding, on the other hand, can also be a business strategy whereby one decides to hoard to create a shortage or counter a shortage and then make huge profits by selling the item in demand.

Moving on, a mess or an accumulation caused by hoarding will almost always be cleared in the near future. The items that are being hoarded will be sold off or given away once the reason for hoarding has been fulfilled. However, an accumulation of things caused by laziness has no deadline of being cleared. A lazy person may never clear up a mess owing to his/her laziness, which is a characteristic and will almost always be exhibited by the individual.
