Difference Between Puerto Plata and Punta Can

Puerto Plata vs. Punta Cana

Are you familiar with the destinations Puerto Plata and Punta Cana? They are actually two different regions within the Dominican Republic. As both are popular vacation destinations, there is often confusion between the two areas. Some people mistakenly think of Puerto Plata and Punta Cana interchangeably, but they are actually two distinct tropical paradises.

Let’s start with Puerto Plata. Puerto Plata is generally thought to be ‘older’ than Punta Cana in terms of hotels. The prices of lodging in Puerto Plata are also lower than in Punta Cana. However, Puerto Plata does have its share of beautiful properties, including: Casa Colonial Beach and Spa, Barcelo Puerto Plata, and Victoria Golf & Beach Resort. Diving is a popular activity along the North Coast of Puerto Plata, where there are a number of shallow reefs. Windsurfing is a popular sport along the North Coast.

In contrast, Punta Cana is a newer destination than Punta Cana, as many hotels have recently established chains there. Given how Punta Cana was built up in recent years, the prices for a vacation there tend to be higher than those in Puerto Plata.

As opposed to the surrounding areas of Puerto Plata, where seas give way to many activities and excursions, the waters surrounding Punta Cana tend to be calmer. This may appeal more to someone who is looking for a relaxing vacation on the beach, rather than one filled with activities. However, Punta Cana, just like Puerto Plata, has its own share of fun things to do. Punta Cana is known for its beautiful beaches, and the region’s several shallow marine pools provide visitors with safe places to bathe. Also, many water sports are available on Punta Cana’s beaches.

In summary, Puerto Plata and Punta Cana are both beautiful locations within the Dominican Republic. Nevertheless, the main differences between them are:

1. Puerto Plata is older than Punta Cana, which translates into generally lower rates for vacation packages in Puerto Plata than in Punta Cana.

2. The next major difference is that the seas in Puerto Plata are rougher than those in Punta Cana. This makes Punta Cana a better choice for travelers who want a ‘beach vacation’, as opposed to one that is activity-oriented. Whether you decide to visit Puerto Plata or Punta Cana, depends on your personal preferences. You will have a beautiful vacation in either location.
