Difference Between the Navy and Marines

marinesNavy vs Marines

There are several branches that make up the United States armed forces. They are the Army, Navy, Marine Corps (marines), the Coast Guard and the Air Force. The Marines and the Navy were officially established in 1775 by the continental congress, that had specific missions for them both, and, although they would often hate to admit it, the Marines are essentially a special branch of the Navy. The Coastal Guard’s principle duty is to man all sea ports used for entry to and exit from the US. Basically, they are supposed to be on top of everything entering and leaving the United States via the seas.

The Navy’s primary role is to ensure that the seas are free, and that the United States is able to make use of the seas, when and where it is required, by national interests. To add to that, the Navy will also supplement the Air Force power, when the need arises during conflicting times. Also, Navy ships can be used to launch an attack on a land target from miles away, using very heavy guns and cruise missiles. Stealth attacks on enemy targets can also be carried out using the Navy submarines. Another primary function of the Navy is to transport Marines to the place of conflict. The Naval reserves will provide assistance to the Navy when it is required.

The Marines are a branch of the United States armed forces that specialize in amphibious missions. They are trained to capture and take control of ‘beach heads’, and to make an attack route that will enable assault on the enemy from almost any direction. The Marines were first established as a landing force for the Navy. The Marine Corps were then made a separate service, by Congress, in 1798. Although amphibious missions are their primary specialty, recently they can also take part in ground combat operations. Since they are basically a ‘lighter’ force than the army, they can be rapidly deployed. During combat missions, the Marines are usually, to a large extent, self-sufficient, with their own airpower that mainly comprises of fighter aircraft and attack helicopters. Even though this is the case, the Marines will, to a large extent, be assisted by the Navy, logistically and administratively. For instance, many of the medics that are with the Marines during combat, are actually trained medics from the Navy.

Summary
The Navy specializes in controlling the entry and exit points of the sea ports, while the Marines carry out amphibious combat missions.
During times of need, the Navy will supplement the Air Force power, while the Marines support the Army when rapid deployment is needed.
Unlike the Navy, the Marines are not completely independent, as they will occasionally rely on the navy for logistical and administrative support.

  1. Pretty good, but actually all of our medical personel are members of the Navy. And they are called “Corpsmen” not “Medics”. I like to call them “Devil Docs”, though.

  2. I noticed a contradiction

You stated that the coastal guard has the following function: “The Coastal Guard’s principle duty is to man all sea ports used for entry to and exit from the US. Basically, they are supposed to be on top of everything entering and leaving the United States via the seas.”

And the navy had the following function: “The Navy’s primary role is to ensure that the seas are free, and that the United States is able to make use of the seas, when and where it is required, by national interests. The Naval reserves will provide assistance to the Navy when it is required.”

But in the end you said: “The Navy specializes in controlling the entry and exit points of the sea ports, while the Marines carry out amphibious combat missions.”

So who controls the sea ports, the navy or the coastal guard? They’re not the same because you said they were different branches in the following quote:

“They are the Army, Navy, Marine Corps (marines), the Coast Guard and the Air force”

    • Coastguards control Ports(which are entry n exit points to US.
Navy control those points which are entry and exit points to those ports i.e. Points in sea or areas in seas and also control and patrol high seas!!
Coast guards have a narrow strip of land and water to protect!
Navy comes in after that strip of water or if case goes out of the hands of coastguards!
Coast guard ,I think,is more of paramilitary and civil organization like that of police of the sea in any country!

  3. @Dirk i think The coastal guard control the see in terms of import and export of goods and its safety while the Navy Deals with the military movement in terms of weapons, ships and co. So they both control the sea but the Navy is more War fare inclined.

    • The US Coast Guard is the only armed service not under the Department of Defense. Their history is long and storied. They came from the combining of the Life saving small boats, the light house keepers and the Revenue Cutters. They were primarily tasked with anti smuggling and tax collection. So were under the US Treasury Dept. Then the US Dept. of Transportation. Now they are under the Depart. of Home Land Security. They maintained the light houses and a distributed radio navigation system through all US and territorial waters (Loran-C System), which was even used by commercial air until the adaptation of GPS. They deploy and maintain the navigation buoy systems. They manage Vessel Traffic Systems (VTS), on domestic water ways similar to Air Traffic Controllers. Maintain search and rescue small boats. They also inspect shipping and civilian vessels for safety and sea worthiness. They also are responsible for the certification of merchant marine sailors. They interdict foreign incursions of US Fishing waters in enforcement of treaties. Lastly, in times of peace, they are federal law enforcement. In war, they are transferred to the US Navy. US Coast Guard members served in every theater during WW II with one receiving the Medal of Honor in the battle of Guadalcanal. Served in the Korean War, Vietnam in Swift boats and during the Gulf War.

  4. Coastal guard is a civil organisation . Navy and Marine corps are military corps.

If an individual , a company or a country doesn’t comply to coastal guard , Navy or Marines will come in .They are the supreme force with all the military devices needed. Coastal guard don’t use air craft carriers , nuclear submarines, cruising bombs etc… It is a difference of intensity like municipal police , federal police and army. Three levels of intensity , here.

  5. Quiet alright you said the navy and marines are the supreme forces, but then ,which one should respond firstly, when any company or country doesn’t comply to coastal guard, according to their highrach?

  6. Quiet alright you said the navy and marines are the supreme forces, but then ,which one should respond firstly, when any company or country doesn’t comply to coastal guard?

  7. I think you can summarise it like this:

Navy – control high seas and off shore aquatic protection of any country and the US – ensuring US can move freely on open waters

Coast guard – aquatic protection of coastal entry points and ports to the US and the immediate waters around it

Marines – lightly deployed military force used for amphibious missions on land and water, but also entirely land based missions where a full army deployment is not required

Army – land based combat force only, sometimes supported by Marines depending on the requirements of the mission

  8. I’m living in Haiti if I Want to joining the corps marine or the navy, how can I do that? Cause I want to be a doctor?

    • Fransly,
The Marines do not have medical personnel. As the Marine Corps is under the Department of the Navy. The Navy provides medical Navy Corpsman. To join the US military. You need to be a legal immigrant to the US.

  9. Much money has been squandered time wasted under the guise of training me when if any reasonable person looks at it is only theft by deception. The only time i went to an army base was with a mecican guy working without a licrnse who moved a chair to my moms house.these stalkers are not military certified trainers they are tv show rejects who are rich and perform degrafing scenarios to notify me with their acting skills i am undeserving and naively unaware of basic skills such ad eating and living in a secure environment. What do i say to joanie loves chachi you are right i am too backwards to reclaim what is rightfully mine why don’t toy take over you boyfriend beats you. Another lawsuit military allowing extras to perform so called military operations.
