Czechoslovakia
Czechoslovakia was a sovereign state. It was established October, 1918 after gaining independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was a country located in Central Europe. It was one of the very few countries which could preserve its democratic status during the two World Wars. This country saw much political turmoil from 1939 -1945. It was forced to divide and be incorporated partially into Nazi Germany. During this time, Czechoslovakia did not de facto exist. Meaning, it was in practice there but was not officially established. The government was referred to as “government in exile.” In 1945, after World War II, the eastern part of Czechoslovakia, called Carpathian Ruthenia, was annexed by the Soviet Union. Czechoslovakia stayed a Communist country from 1948-1989. The capital of Czechoslovakia was Prague. After the Velvet Revolution, a peaceful, non-violent end came for the Communist government. In November, 1989 Czechoslovakia became a democracy again. Later, two separate nations were formed in 1993, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
