Difference Between Democrat and Republican

Citizens registered as an Independent, Democrat or Republican.

Democrats and Republicans are the two main parties in the United States. While recently moderate and alternative parties have become more prominent, Democrats and Republicans remain the two historically largest parties, which hold the majority of the seats in the Senate and in the House of Representatives. Democrats and Republicans have opposing views and positions on several key issues, including economic, political, military and social matters.

History and symbols

The Democratic Party is associated to the famous Democratic donkey, which first appeared during Democrat Andrew Jackson’s 1828 presidential campaign. After his opponent called him a donkey, Jackson decided to use the image of the animal – which he believed to be smart, brave and strong-willed – on his campaign posters. The symbol became famous when the cartoonist Thomas Nast used the donkey in newspaper cartoons1. The Democratic Party started in 1828 as anti-Federal faction and grew to become one of the leading political forces of the United States.

The Republican Party – also known as GOP, Grand Old Party – is associated to the Republican elephant. In 1874, Thomas Nast introduced the elephant in one of his cartoons and, with time, the strong and dignified animal became the symbol of the Republican Party2. The GOP started in 1854 – few years later than its Democratic counterpart – to stop slavery, which was viewed as unconstitutional.

Democrat vs Republican3

The main difference between the two parties is, indeed, their political orientation. The Democratic Party is left-leaning, liberal and usually associated with progressiveness and equality. The Republican Party, instead, is right-leaning, traditional and associated with equity and economic freedom and with the ideal of “survival of the fittest”.

Given their different origins and opposing political orientations, the two parties clash on a number of fundamental issues4:

Taxes

  • Republicans believe that both rich and poor should pay the same share of taxes (and possibly receive tax cuts). Even if large tax cuts may lead to a decrease in the revenue collected by the government, Republicans believe that, after tax reductions, rich people and entrepreneurs would be more likely to invest and create jobs – thus initiating a trickledown effect that would eventually benefit the entire society. Republicans also oppose raising minimum wages as such increase could hurt small businesses; and

  • Democrats believe in raising taxes for the upper class and lowering taxes for the lower and middle class to allow the government to boost spending for social programs for lower class

Gun laws

  • Republicans oppose gun control laws and believe that one should be able to obtain ammunitions with no registration. Republicans also strongly support the right of self-defense; and

  • Democrats are in favor of an increase in arm control but recognize that the Second Amendment is an important part of the American tradition and that the right to use firearms should be preserved. Democrats advocate for the reinstatement of the assault weapons ban and believe that the government should make the background check system stronger.

Voter ID laws

  • Republicans are requesting photo identification for voting: they believe that such measure would prevent cases of election fraud; and

  • Democrats believe that everyone has the right to vote and oppose photo identification, as they believe it may be discriminatory.

Abortion

  • Republicans, largely influenced by religion and tradition, believe that the government should restrict abortion. In fact, Republicans think that an unborn child has the fundamental right to live which cannot be taken away; and

  • Democrats support Roe vs Wade and believe that a woman should have the right to make her own decisions regarding her pregnancy and that the government has no right to get involved with any woman’s pregnancy. Instead of eliminating abortion, Democrats want to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies by enhancing the level of sex education in all schools. An increased awareness would also reduce the number of cases of sexually transmitted diseases.

Same-sex marriages

  • Republicans do not agree with same-sex marriages and believe that a marriage should be between a man and woman only. Republicans also think that gay couples should not be able to adopt children; and

  • Democrats oppose same-sex discrimination at Federal state level and believe that same sex couples should have the same rights as heterosexual couples, including the right to adopt a child.

Limits of the government

  • Republicans believe that a smaller government is better. According to the Republican view, the government should have less responsibilities and should not interfere in the economic sphere; and

  • Democrats believe that the government should have a strong role in helping and supporting Americans. The intervention of the government in the public sphere includes the creation of regulation for businesses and for the health care system.

Immigration

  • Republicans are in favor of strong border controls and push for limits to immigration – in particular from certain countries. Republicans believe that a tighter control on immigration would benefit American workers and would reduce the risks related to terrorist attacks. The Muslim Ban proposed by President Trump few days after the beginning of his mandate is a clear example of the stance of the Republican Party with regard to immigration and integration5; and

  • Democrats are generally more favorable to open immigration policies. Indeed, they do not believe that there should be no control and that anyone should be allowed in the country and granted asylum; but they believe that the process to request asylum should be quicker and that mass deportation is not the solution to all problems related to terrorism and unemployment.

Death penalty

  • Traditionally, Republicans are in favor of death penalty and believe it is a just punishment for certain crimes; and

  • Most Democrats are against death penalty and believe that capital punishment should be commuted into life sentences.

Health care

  • Republicans support private health care systems and believe that the regulation of the national health care system should not be entirely in the hands of the government; and

  • Democrats support public universal health care and believe that the government should intervene to assist Americans who struggle to cover their health care expenses.

Individual vs collective rights

  • Republicans believe in individual rights and in the “survival of the fittest”; and

  • Democrats believe in collective rights over individual rights.

While the differences between the two parties are clear, not all Democrats have the same ideas and not all Republicans support all the traditional beliefs of the GOP. The two parties have become so big that it is almost impossible to understand where they really stand on certain issues. For instance, while traditionally Republicans are against abortion and in favor of death penalty, there are cases in which Republican representatives have expressed their support for free choice and have condemned the use of capital punishment.

Furthermore, while Republicans traditionally advocate for a “small government” that should not interfere in the private sphere, they do support some “big government” stances when they insist on the need of imposing government regulations on abortion. In the same way, while Democrats advocate for a “big government” that should intervene in economic and social decisions, they support free choice and believe that the government should have no say on abortion and should not interfere with a woman’s pregnancy.

Summary

The Democratic and the Republican Party are the two main forces that have shaped the political scenario of the United States since the 19th century. It is interesting to note that in the past few decades, Democrat and Republican Presidents have been constantly alternating. Such tendency shows that the American society remains deeply divided over key issues.

The traditional, right-leaning Republican Party opposes the liberal, left-leaning Democratic Party on economic, social and political matters:

  • Republicans believe in strong border controls, in tax cuts, in the use of firearms and in death penalty. They are against abortion, same-sex marriages and support private health care systems; and

  • Democrats support open immigration policies, believe that rich people should pay higher taxes, advocate for more regulations in the use of firearms and oppose death penalty. They are in favor of free choice, support same-sex marriage and adoption rights for same-sex couples and believe that the government should intervene in economic and social matters, including health care.

However, the two parties are so large and diverse that it is quite complex to understand where they really stand and to identify the line that clearly separates them. In fact, we can find extremists and moderates on both sides and the evolution of the national and international assets often leads people to change views and perspectives on key issues, including immigration, gun control, death penalty, same-sex marriage and abortion. Therefore, while the traditional stances of the Democratic and the Republican Party are quite different, the reality is rather blurred and their positions do not oppose as neatly.

  1. Republican all the way

    • it seems that if the democrats were to be all that were in the world. Us humans would go extinct because we would get nowhere in life because you think paying other peoples way through life will help the world when indeed all that it does is slow it down because nothing is getting accomplished. you will begin to feel that you don’t need to do anything if the government just pays it all for you, and if you do nothing then what do you have

      • Hold that thought,
And your contention. I’m a contender as well, all though I’m NOT a politico. INDEPENDENT IF, I’m forced to choose. America used USED TO BE, the greatest Country on the planet. Reps have great philosophies. Dems do too. Its V-day, so I’ll try and seperate hatred from love. Not my own, because there is no hate in my heart. Its my world view. Any contenders?

        • Good point. Both the Democrats and Republicans were great parties at one time but have morphed radically thru extremists gaining the upper hand in each. It bodes ill for the Republic.

The Republicans were taken over by the neoconservatives who used crony capitalism to finance their interventionist military agenda so as to keep America a super power believing in that there lay our security. As the founder of neoconservatism wrote, neoconservatives were liberals who got mugged and refused to press charges. The Republicans had a chance for a great comeback with their 1994 Contract With America but instead opted on a contract ON America. They decided to raid the candy store and to try to out corrupt and out pork the Democrats. They almost succeeded. Yet at one time the Republicans were the party of smaller government, fiscal sanity, less government intrusiveness, more individual freedom, less taxation for all, free enterprise, avoidance of unnecessary foreign adventurism, and the rule of constitutional law thru an exegesist interpretation of the Constitution, particularly the Bill of Rights.

The Democrats were taken over by the progressive Left; the Fabian socialists. Their goal is to establish a socialist welfare state in order to bring about economic and political equity for all. Unfortunately with large government came great inefficiencies; massive fraud, waste and abuse; social engineering; restrictions on free speech, associations, the media, and the free market; a hostility to religion; abortion on demand for any reason at any time; acquiescence to immorality both private and public; and a disdain for the restrictions of the Constitution instead preferring an eisegecist interpretation of a “living” Constitution.

The Republican party was started as a third party to address the issue of slavery. It was the party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Eisenhower. Now it’s the party of big business and crony capitalism. At one time the Democrats were the party of equal rights and justice for all with attention to protecting the small people. Now it’s the party of big government and crony capitalism. There’s a term for that: fascism.

I found this excellent definition of fascism on the internet. “Fascism is an economic model in which the state dictates the utilization of privately held assets to achieve public policy goals.” Does this not describe America today?

By the way, the other side of the coin of fascism you’ll find socialism. Both are authoritarian. Fascism believes the state controls society thru owning private businesses in all but name. Socialism believes in owning the means of production. Neither need produce the sound of jackboots in the street. They can wear velvet gloves.

Politics has always been a rough sport, often a bloody contact sport. But more often than not Americans believed in the concept of the Loyal Opposition. No longer I fear. Many progressive and Leftist called Bush a war criminal, Hitler a fascist, and a Nazi. And more than a few called for his assassination and the extermination of the Right; they wanted psikchuskas, gulags, and killing fields. Many conservatives have called Obama a Communist or Marxist and that liberals/progressives/socialists should be shot for treason or expelled from the country.

Such attitudes spell disaster for the continued survival of the Republic, one established as a democratic Republic under the rule of constitutional law and a free market economy with proper contract law. We once were a shining beacon of hope on the hill. I fear that light is about to be turned off.

          • Oh boy, here we go throwing around big scary words like socialism and fascism. The flip side of fascism is not socialism as being a fascist is being a socialist. Socialism is a way of governing while fascism is an economic system. The Nazis were a fascist party but were called the National Socialist Party. See my point? To call Democrats socialists is definitely misleading, as the Republicans are as well. They just don’t realize it. They are socialist hating socialists who don’t realize they are socialists. You cannot run a country without some degree of it. Without it, we wouldn’t have parks, roads, police or fire, a military, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, legislative bodies that examined our food, medication, air, soil, or water. The list can keep going. Obviously there is bad socialism as well but it almost ceases to exist here.

          • Sean587, failure to use those ” big scary” words is called political correctness or worse, cowardice. Both socialism and fascism are political and economic systems. And while the Nazis were fascists, not all fascists are Nazis. I realize we associate fascism with the sound of jack boots in the street and the Holocaust, but fascism can wear a velvet glove. Furthermore, fascism and socialism can and often work together.

By the same token, not all Democrats are socialists but it’s the progressive/socialist/leftist wing that is in control of the Democrat Party. For the GOP it’s the neoconservatives. and both work to further crony capitalism.

For any form of democracy, and ours is a republican form, there will indeed be socialist manifestations, some of which are good. However, to avoid excess our Founders devised a Constitution which delegated certain powers, and only certain powers, to the federal government. Those powers can be found mainly in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution. However, we’ve allowed the central government to run amuck to the point where it believes that it can use the Commerce and Establishment Clauses to justify just about any federal action.

For example, we now have executive branch agencies banning use of viable energy resources, banning use of water to grow food in certain areas making it necessary to import food from China, trying to make in too economically expensive to use private transportation, trying to dictate what food we’ll be allowed to eat, taking private property without just compensation, and putting up roadblocks to obtaining medicines from less expensive resources. To make matters worse, we have unelected and unconfirmed czars dictating policy to such agencies.

As for the military, that’s neither conservative nor liberal. It’s one of the first duties of the federal government to protect the country from aggression or invasion, including by illegal immigrants. Roads, police, fire services, and primary education are all the responsibilities of local governments, not the federal.

When it’s all said and done, we no longer have a democratic Republic under the rule of constitutional law with a free market capitalistic economy. We don’t even have an intact Bill of Rights. We may need to dust of the Declaration of independence and take it to heart with a vengeance.

          • Without socialism the red poor welfare states would be third world countries. The people who constantly elect Republicans states are a mess. They are the least educated. They make the least income. They have the most unhealthy people.

If the red states are the welfare states. Only 4 red states in this entire country give more to the fed than they take. While only 4 blue states take more than they give.

I live in NJ. My taxes are sky high. But with that comes the best education system in the country. Clean air. If we has a little less socialism of my tax dollars carrying these failed poor red welfare states my taxes would go down significantly. Why don’t they do the Conservative thing. Pull up their boots and take economic responsibility for themselves.

            http://voices.washingtonpost.com/ezra-klein/2010/04/the_red_state_ripoff.html

      • I am a true American and I believe in the right everyone has to voice their opinion, this and the diverse personalities contribute to making our country so great. However, I think a little education is needed:

Franklin D. Roosevelt (Democrat – 1932), was elected during the Great Depression. Roosevelt was one of the most popular Presidents of all time and he is the only one who won and served four terms.

Roosevelt created several Government Programs called the “New Deal”. Because of the creation of the “New Deal”, many jobs were created for people with many changes, for the better, being made to the economy. Before the New Deal, Democrats favored limited government, as the need during the Great Depression to food, house and cloth OUR citizens, Democrats ideal’s changed, wanting to ensure the health and well-being of our citizens and opted for more government. From after the New Deal, to now, Democrats support the government managing the economy and helping disadvantaged people.

You may disagree with the overall plan of the Democratic Party, but be mindful to ensure you nor any of your loved ones are ever in need of the Government Programs the Democrats hold onto so tightly. They may not be there when you need them.

        • I am not disagreeing with you. Roosevelt was a great president, but the only reason he won for four terms was because nobody else had tried after George Washington set a precidant of only going two terms, and everybody after Roosevelt couldn’t because there was a law againts it.

        • But then, you’re enriching the poor’s lack of performance and lack of work ethics and helping them stay where they are. You may not be helping them at all. Look at all the illegal immigrants, how far have they advanced?

          • Not to mention wrecks like Me, sure I get a check every month, But If I didn’t have a need for It, I wouldn’t bother with SSI(Supplemental Security Income), the running joke is that SSI for some like Me supplements all of nothing, In CA if one gets SSI one doesn’t get Food Stamps cause of disagreement between the state of CA and the USDA/SSA… Congress could fix this, but so far has just let them squabble.

        • Come on people stop letting the media divide you as people. This is just as worst as being like any other bigget, or hate group out there. Listen how we preach to one another and how we try to influence each other to go along with the same idesa’s when you don’t agree with a situation. We all relate to what’s best for each party, but yet once planted into your head by the media in some strange idiolgy to were you attend to go with what sounds wright to you. Media and politians prey on your weeknesses and dictates who you should not like. Let’s be strong and respect both sides of the parties. At the end Democrats and republicans need each other.

      • Don’t be Ignorant chucky! It is called a SAFETY NET, because that is what distinguishes us between civilized society and a third world country. Even the lowest of the low will have bread on the table and clothes on their back, enabling them to be productive.

      • It seems that if all there were in the world were Republicans, the population would be 1. Since it is a dog -eat -dog existence, only one can be at the top of the mountain. Unfortunately, it won’t be the other 99.99% of Republicans, relegating them to voting against their own best interest, or causing their own demise. We are not wild animals, so natural selection is not relevant.

Jesus told us to care the most for the least amongst us.

        • And If Richard M. Nixon were still alive and as Young the current bunch of wannabe Repubs, He’s mop the floor with them. They called Him tricky for a reason.

        • The Bible also says if a man does not work neither should he eat. Stop taking a few verses of the Bible and twisting it to your agenda. The bottom line is you could take all the people in the USA and make them equal in every way and at the end of the day the men and women who want to work will excel while lazy people will diminish.

          • Spoken like a true republican, the typically so called “CHRISTIAN REPUBLICAN NUT JOB! your cherry picking of isolated scripture shows how pathetic you really are

          • Knight4444, it’s unfortunate that you believe if someone believes in using the Bible they’re a nut job while likely accepting the use of the Communist Manifesto, Cloward & Pivens, and Saul Alinsky as gospels.

The Scripture about not feeding a man who is able to work but refuses to do so obviously is offensive to atheist progressives, socialists, and communists like you. Just who is the mentally ill person?

      • “Us humans would go extinct”??? Learn English, you illiterate deluded moron!
Since when do you begin a sentence with the word “WE”???

“Conservatives” are backward idiots who are easily conned with bs propaganda.

        • bptr, perhaps it’s you who is less than erudite. An error in grammar doesn’t make one illiterate, however, someone saying so might indicate that person is an intolerant elitist. Claiming that someone who can read and write, even if not perfectly, is illiterate shows that you are less than literate.

In your case, your elitist bigotry is well indicated by your puerile demagogic statement that, “Conservatives” are backward idiots who are easily conned with bs propaganda.” Next you’ll likely claim that conservatives should be sent to psikhuchkas, gulags, or killing fields, such is your partisan hatred. You desperately need to grow up and become a mensch lest your type ends the Great American Experiment.

          • You have no idea what your talking about! I’ve studied the bible over 34 yrs!! I think it’s the most important book ever written even though it’s been translate many times and has been mistranslated for sure. I have a problem with people trying to change the nature of CHRIST. He never kicked people in the gut and told them their poor because their LAZY!! That’s man’s ugly nature talking. So before you open your big mouth maybe YOU should ask someone what they meant rather than make rash, ignorant judgements!

        • Does…We the People, of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union…etc, etc…ring a bell? O_o!

          • The preamble to the Constitution means in order to form a more perfect union that the Articles of Confederation, which have proven themselves woefully inadequate, have failed and we now assemble here to write this Constitution which we believe will better suit the needs of this new nation.

Does that ring a bell. If not, please read the Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers.

      • exactly, the government can not do everything for u

        14

      • Amen 🙂 lol

    • Your views are not only biased, favoring the republican viewpoint, they are disgustingly inaccurate.

    • First of all this article does make Reps look selfish. There are just as many selfish people on the Dems side as there is on the Reps side. I mean really come on people we fight over all this stupid stuff that my little sister could do herself. What is right, what is wrong, what would hurt someones feelings, what is better for everyone else. I mean come on that healthcare bill helps people who cant help themselves to be able to go to the hospital and get medical attention. I know that there are people who really need it and those who take advantage of that. But really think about those people who take advantage of it like drunks and drug addicts. They are people too. They need to know that someone cares about them and that gives them hope. What if you were in their shoes, wouldnt you want the same thing. So if you arent like those people you need to thank God for what you do have and help those who need it, even if they arent worthy of it. George Washington even said right after we declared our independence from Britain not to take sides because it would destory our country. Guess what no one listened and look what it i to our economy an peoples lives. I know everyone has opinions but if its for your own selfish reasons do us all a favor and keep your mouth shut an keep it that way. On that note Dems and Reps dont vote for what really they believe is right for the government or for the country or the people. They vote for what they want and how they want it. It has nothing to do with right and wrong, People vote for their selfish reasons. On another note stop critizising our Presidnts. Whether its McCain, or Bush or Obama. They tried or are trying to make this country better and help people. So stop your big fat mouth from moving and let them o your job. Its pretty hard to please everyone so just shut your pie hole. they are doing what they think is better for our country, that is their job and that is what they are trying to do. How about you be president umm would that siut you. i bet you woul make some pretty dumb choices along with some good ones so let these people ddo their jobs. Which is to govern our people and look out for us when we need a helping hand. Do you know how hard it is to bring home over a million tof our troops back home. its pretty difficult when WE ARE TRYING TO HELP OTHER COUNTRIES AN WE GET INVOLVE IN THE MESS!! So let Obama o his job an get back to yours an stop critisizing other people and their jobs when you couldnt do any better or try any better than he is doing. i am going to end it on that note and let you think about this who Rps and Dems thing.

    • Redneck? That seems a little ridiculous. I believe the true difference between Republicans and Democrats is that us Republicans have a sarcastic sense of humor and think things through a little better.

  2. The article says that democrat rules, republican drools.

Seriously! Republicans in this article shows selfishness.

    • Yes, this article is heavily weighted towards democrats, and portrays republicans with a negative slant.

    • sounds like republicans want what’s theirs and democrats want what belongs to someone else. I guess the republicans really are selfish.

      • which one is the elaphant

        • Which one is the donkey? From factmonster.com;

“The now-famous Democratic donkey was first associated with Democrat Andrew Jackson’s 1828 presidential campaign. His opponents called him a jackass (a donkey), and Jackson decided to use the image of the strong-willed animal on his campaign posters. Later, cartoonist Thomas Nast used the Democratic donkey in newspaper cartoons and made the symbol famous.

Nast invented another famous symbol—the Republican elephant. In a cartoon that appeared in Harper’s Weekly in 1874, Nast drew a donkey clothed in lion’s skin, scaring away all the animals at the zoo. One of those animals, the elephant, was labeled “The Republican Vote.” That’s all it took for the elephant to become associated with the Republican Party.”

  3. CHEESE IS GOOD!!!!!!

  4. So what do you do when you find yourself agreeing on different issues on both sides?

    • Become an independant

    • You’re an independent.

    • That would generally describe somebody such as a libertarian

    • “Independence” is what you strive for. Republicans say that is what they strive for, but republicans are for republicans…NO ONE ELSE. “Hard left Reps” want to irradicate, meaning end the lives of millions of U.S. citizens “…in order to make for a more perfect Union.” Hard left Dem’s”, are too much for ME as well. “Independent” is STILL dependent on Gov., but they see merit from both sides of the field.

  5. Ok so I am a Democrat, but this article totally confused me on who I am…………..but I agree, REPUBLICANS ARE SELFISH!!

    • Da Boss,
Its ashame that you and many other confused Americans have no idea what they stand for. I really hope that you did not vote, especially when your unsure of what you believe in.
Republicans are far from selfish, I’m sure there are some individuals within the republican, democrat and independant party who have selfish behaviors, but you cant label republicans as selfish. The reason why your free is because of the Republicans. Democrats views on how the country should be ran, takes away our freedom of speech, and what we choose.

      • my children it’s time to remember who was, who is, and who will be, FOREVER yes you guessed it right-GOD. Remember the TEN COMMANDMENTS/ these are god’s laws not government’s people it is time we start living by these law’s this world is so corrupt that everyone needs to de-nounce dem- or rep some say they are independent but when the clouds part and the heavens open I only want to be known as god’s child. I truly PRAY that all feels as do I.

        • TOTALLY true.I think America should be for what they say. ”In GOD we trust”etc. It is sad Americans won’t be able to walk around in public with a bible!!!!!!!!!!:( GO CHRISTIANS

      • So yeah republicans are selfish, but they want a better country and more freedom for the people. At least they dont take other peoples hard earned money and give it to people who don’t even deserve it.

      • Of course Republicans are selfish. They believe in being allowed to use their money to help those they wish to. On the other hand, Democrats are very generous with other people’s money.

      • How The hell are republicans selfish ? And no. The difference between republicans and democrats is that republicans have class; unlike some democrats who walk around acting like idiots. ( not all but some )

    • Every article that you read on the differences of the two parties is going to lean to towards a side. You should do some research and read different articles. Ultimately, you have to decide for yourself.

  6. i think democrats want to have way too much government control. i always vote straight republican ticket. otherwise, we’ll be CONTROLLED by the government and i will not be controlled. i want to be free.

  7. I like that last part about woman’s rights… I remember the good old days when they would just be in the kitchen making me a sandwich. Now they think they can be paid the same as us men? Psshhh, Get outta here.. stay in the kitchen.
    Republican Y’alls,,

  8. so you Rep are the reasons why are men are getting killed over seas? because you decided to vote Republican!!!!!

    • Would you dare to say that about Wilson, FDR, Truman, JFK, LBJ, Clinton, or Obama?

    • You should stfu. If we didn’t have them fighting for us voluntarily, we would have innocent people being killed in terrorist attacks all the time. So before you start typing some bs about republicans make sure it dosnt have a valid reason to it. Kay thanks bye.

  9. I’m a moderate democrat but even I’ll agree this article has a bias against Republican

  10. Wow, this article is very biased. It mostly only says pros for democrats, and cons for reps. I’m democrat and I think we need change in this article. This was very unhelpful. Voted 1 star.

  11. Lol i thought it made republicans look good everyone on there own if you fail you are 100% liable sounds like life. But iam a democrat myself

  12. Im neither a democrat, republican, nor independent,… matter of fact, not american, never even been there…… I frenquently get involved with north american politics media, so I will say this : from here, it seems & sounds to me like the democratic party is litteraly a bit more logical than the repubs. in terms of policy, ideology, and regimes …….. period.

  13. Put it this way before the new deal was passed if a family or man (Since most women did not work at the time) became disabled due to some misfortune without the new deal (Welfare, food stamps social security etc) the family had two choices to survive. Move in with family (If they had any) or off to the poorhouse. Since poorhouses did not allow children they were taken from the parents before throwing them into the county home. Thats a republicans idea of helping the poor.

The Democrats are for assiting that disabled family with unemployment if temporary or diability if permanent. They would provide food stamps so the family would not starve and they could remain in their home. And at age 65 or wehatever you have a retirement ss check, before 35% of the elderly had no income.

Now you can either look at yourself and say hey I want to be a republican because I dont want to contribute my income to these programs I want it all for myself. And then if you fall off a house tough luck no disability, unemployment or foodstamps for you I hope you made enough and stashed enough away to support your family the rest of your life.

Or you can say gee thats scary what if something happens before I stash millions away I dont want my children ripped away from me and thrown into a poorhouse. These programs seem pretty worthwhile and humane. I dont like anyone to have to endure that kind of hardship.

Thats it in a nutshell Republicans are for themselves and democrats are for society

    • Interesting..=)

    • I wouldn’t want my money to go to someone that is taking advantage of the system and can actually do something with their life. They need to take responsibility and try to help themselves instead of completely relying on the government. People work hard for their money so why should they have to pay for someone who is lazy and is not working hard to earn money? So if this is selfish, then I guess I’m a selfish person. So what? There will always be a difference with Democrats and Republicans, but before people say that one side sucks, they should know what the side believes in and not just say they are a certain party because their parents are. The war issue also has different sides. I respect the ones who are over in Iraq and I thank them for their service to our country. But I don’t believe that if we pull out everything will be over and the countries will be at peace. I know that some people do not believe what I wrote down, but it’s what I believe in. God bless.

      • not everyone is lazy and taking advantage of the system. that percentage is actually small and even smaller in times like these. There are people with low intelligence and are on the bottom of the “qualified” list of applicants for a job, and are really having a hard time. Do we just Ignore them and let them suffer and die because all they know how to do is procreate?

    • I am disabled. In fact, I just hit my, 10th anniversary of when I was forced to stop working (yes, FORCED- I was still trying to take care of my cases from home and was told by the Director of my department that I was not to do ANY business whilst out on disability. I thought it was temporary and wanted to stay on top of my work). When I was in my early 20s, I purchased a Disability Income policy from a private insurance company (yeah, one of those EVIL, MONEY-GRUBBING INSURANCE COMPANIES). I figured that if I got hit by a bus or something, I wanted to be able to pay my bills and not leave all the financial burden on my parents (with whom I figured I would most likely live because, at the time, I wasn’t married). As I worked my way up the corporate ladder, my benefits improved, and my last job included both Short and Long Term Disability policies for employees.
So, hard work (whilst I was able) and a little financial planning made sure that if something happened and I was unable to work due to disability, I was covered. Yes, I qualify for and receive SSDI- for which I am thankful- but the hoops I had to jump through to receive said government assistance were ridiculous – and made me a little angry when I went to the DES office and saw the other “needy” people who were receiving assistance. The two people in front of me were young males wearing expensive FUBU track suits, Air Jordans, and at least 1carat diamonds in each ear. Really? REALLY? Oh, but if I had even murmured a question as to their eligibility qualifications, I would have been branded a racist because I’m white and they were black. (Same as ANYONE who is not a publicly avowed Liberal Democrat who makes any criticism of Obama is labeled a racist). I know there are “invisible” disabilities – so just because those young men looked healthy doesn’t mean they weren’t disabled or unable to find work… but as someone who had sold as much of my private property, including everything from jewelry to clothing, before applying for “my piece” of government aid, I was disgusted at their blatant display of at least some wealth, yet still jumping on the government teat. So much for the argument that everyone receiving government assistance needs it.
Also, generations of Welfare Families is a documented occurrence. Don’t kid yourself.

And, FYI, I was a card-carrying Dem for 20 years (well, there was that short period when I switched to the Green Party to vote for Ralph Nader- but other than that, I was Dem). I only changed party affiliation a few months ago because I wanted a say in who would eventually go head-to-head with Obama in November. I didn’t want to see another Progressive in Rep’s clothing (like McCain) up for vote. I honestly don’t agree with bipartisanship, but I had to make my stand. This once-great country cannot withstand another 4 years of Obamanation or its ilk. JMHO

  14. Basically Republicans are Responsible for themselves and expect others to be responsible as well. (Work hard, play hard.)

Democrats prefer everyone just be treated equal. (Work or not, we’ll still love you)

  15. Doesn’t a democratic society seem very similar to communism in a sense that we become a classless society that is controlled entirely by the government? I envision a great deal of dependence by the people. Where is the independence in that? I think that people should think for themselves rather than rely on big brother. Isn’t this synonymous to living at home with your parents all of your life living by their standards and rules always telling you what you can and can’t do? Don’t get me wrong but it may very well have been pleasant for you, but my vote is on independence, less oversight, smaller government.

Granted I do believe in equality in the sense that people are people and everyone should be able to vote, marry, serve regardless of religion, sex, orientation, etc and that noone can tell you otherwise.

I guess I’m an independent with an emphasis toward repub.

  16. LoL…all u ppl R saying that this article is making the democrats look good…I am just researching the difference between democrats and republicans….so before I didn’t really know what they were..
and to me dis article seems like its making the republicans look good….exept for at the end:
“One can also come across many ideological differences between the two. Some examples are that when the Democrat believes in decreasing military finance, the Republican wants to increase military budget. When the democrat wants women’s right to be legalised, the Republican does not want it to be legalised”….

    • After research and reading allvof you guys and girls responses I know that iam a democrat. Aye let’s not forget that the first people to ever call themselves AMERIKANS were WHITES the “OTHERS” weren’t given a fresh start to a new begining; they had to go threw slavery, racism and pure hatred to even earn their respect as an american. The “OTHERS” had to “catch up” as you well; so how can you can u have a republican country when this country doesn’t give they “OTHER” american citizens an equal opportunity?

      • “call themselves AMERIKANS”
Please tell me you’re not actually allowed to vote and make an attempt at influencing the choices made in our country?

The wording of this article was poorly done; if they had just used plain common language, there would be no issue with their bias sounding terms.
Democrats want everything to be equal.
Republicans want people to do things for themselves.

(Personally, I would sway republican; under democrat ideals, we’d all just be the same person, no matter how hard you worked, your money would be pooled and everyone would get an equal share (in an exaggerated sense). That says that there’s no point in working hard and doing something for yourself because your neighbor who decides to do nothing is going to benefit just as much as you. It makes no sense to me; but then again, I’m a minor, so my opinion legally doesn’t matter.)

      • Seriously? AMERIKANS. Wow.
Numero uno: Learn how to spell, Chuck, before you open a can of worms such as slavery.
I’ll be honest I consider you a complete moron.
I’m a recovering democrat, swaying more towards the independent median.
This article is completely biased. It was written by a democrat, I mean come on now, even Ray Charles could see that.
The base philosophy of the democratic party is awesome, but unfortunately the base philosophy is no longer what drives the democratic party. FDR was an amazing democrat, Obama and Clinton not so much. Programs such as welfare are awesome, until you start having minorities taking these programs as their only means of income. Now before all the minorities start jumping all over me like something out of a Tyler Perry movie, step back and think. How many people in the ‘ghetto’ get out and get a job. Seriously, I live in the ghetto of an inner city. They just live off of welfare. Of course this isn’t 100% true, but definitely a 75% true (or more) statement.
Don’t tell me that the ‘others’ are not americans. My God, the ‘others’ are the ones taking the republicans money.

    • It’s not saying that’s how it is. At the end it’s giving examples of what it had said earlier. Not that it was actually true, which I don’t know if it is or not. But it’s not straight up facts at the end, just examples

  17. I think that if you’re truly educated you can’t just vote “straight ticket” for one party or another year after year, election after election. What’s great about the American government is the checks and balances it has. For example, what would happen if republicans won EVERY election? Or if democrats won EVERY election? As an economist I feel like sometimes you have to look at the big picture and decide what is in the best interest for the country as a whole as well as for yourself. Let’s just say democrats were to keep winning elections…and democrats do exactly what they are labeled they will do, which is to increase social programs. That’s fine giving to the people in need but where is the government pulling these funds from? Taxes? No taxes wouldn’t cover the whole chunk. We would be funding these programs with artificial money. Same thing could be said about republicans winning every election. If you go straight up conservative for a long time it will be counterproductive. My point is, too far left or too far right ALL the time isn’t necessarily good for anyone. We need to balance the pendulum. And that’s what makes America great. Don’t be angry on who wins and who losses, don’t disrespect you public figures. Instead go out and vote and if your party loses, then cooperate with the leaders in place so we can make the best of any situation.

  18. that’s the thing with you democrats. yall would think that republicans are selfish because we dont have the same opinions as you do. in what way does it make republicans selfish if we want what belongs to us and we want to use our own money to pay for ourselves and our families, and democrats want everyone to have to pay for everyone else. how is it selfish if we want to use OUR HARD EARNED MONEY to pay for our own needs instead of using OUR OWN MONEY to pay for other people. democrats would think that’s selfish because that’s what they believe. someone else commented saying “sounds like republicans want what’s theirs and democrats want what belongs to someone else. I guess the republicans really are selfish.” im sorry but that makes absolutely no sense what so ever. if democrats want what belongs to someone else, then that screams selfishness.

    • Look, I don’t think the republicans are selfish in any way. But we democrats are in ABSOLUTELY NO WAY selfish either. We are of one nation, of one family, and we need to take care of each other. If that means giving a little more to help those who need it such as the poverty in my local area or a few poor schools then by all means, I’ll give a little more.

      • listen im not really not talkin about the article. im talkin about all th other comments people are writing. i dont think democrats r selfish, i think the way that other comment somebody said made it seem like it. i think that people wanting to help other people is great and i do it too, but most democrats think that everyone should HAVE to. i think that it should be ur choice to do it or not. whether its the right thing to do or not. its freedom of choice.

    • My two cents

This is kinda what I”m getting after reading all the comments and the article.

Republicans – Believes they should be able to keep what they earn. Promotes the Top-down philosophy and individual rights and justice.

Democrats – tries to balance out the system and promotes social health services and other helpful agencies that help people that cannot stand on their own two legs. Believes in equality and government funding. Taking from the rich giving to the poor (Robin Hood).

Now I can understand working hard and earning your living, even making your own way through life (Republican viewpoint). However, I’ve done a lot of studying on the school system recently and the way we teach our children to go through life. The school system is structured through this Top-down philosophy and most kids either graduate and go through college and end up owing a lot of money, or they graduate and get a job. These days earning your way through college doesn’t exist and living on your own is even harder. Minimum wage is not a “living wage” so a lot of people need help. So the “hard work” doesn’t really get you anywhere if you follow the system. We actually need the support system and the government (Democrat viewpoint). So the idea that we should all be selfish and keep our hard earned money to ourselves and our family is crazy. I wish that more people would decide to help others less fortunate. We are slowly loosing our middle class to the ideals of the top-down philosophy. This is our country, we rise together and we fall together. So why are we fighting each other? Why not lend a helping hand? Not every person out there is a drunk trying to get a few bucks for their alcohol fix. Some of us are single mothers or fathers, some of us are students, and some of us just lost our jobs due to the depression. Should we just ignore those people? In the wild only the strong survive, but we are not animals we are humans, we help our weak and our poor.

      • Thank you so much! I couldn’t agree with you more!!!! 🙂

      • I strongly agree! As I was reading your comment, I was reminded of this idea I read in a book, which stated that the evolution of human beings is not the same as with animals. With animals, natural selection meant that some would evolve to meet the needs of the environment and go on to survive and reproduce offspring who would carry on the genetic line, whilst the ones who didn’t evolve to meet the needs of the environment would simply die off and their genetic line would end there. With human beings, however, instead of waiting for evolution to help us survive the conditions of the environment, we change our environment to suit us, and most importantly we have the ability to empathize with others and help them meet the conditions of life so they can survive and they can have children to cary on the family name.

I know this doesn’t have all that much relevance with the article but I think both the views of democrats and republicans should be understood and respected by all. Some people don’t need help and can live a prosperous life without the help of others, however, the unfortunate fact of reality is that some simply cannot due to the circumstances of life, therefore need the help from others. That doesn’t mean that we should steal from the rich and give to the poor, taking what the fortunate have rightfully earned and give to the unfortunate. It should mean that people have the choice of whether they want to help and how far they want to go to help those in need. And most importantly, it should mean that people shouldn’t just give their money to the ones in need, they should share their knowledge and wisdom with them so the ’cause’ is treated, not just the ‘symptoms. As the old saying goes:

“Give a man a fish and he will feed his family for one meal. Teach a man how to catch fish and he will feed his family for a lifetime.”

        • Very well put. Thank you for posting this.
Your post must have still been in moderation whilst I was typing mine, as I did not see it before I posted.

      • The difference is that Charity is giving because you WANT to help- not because the government tells you that you MUST do it.
Charity without the desire to help is not charity at all.
Forcing someone to give to others is not charity, either.
And, just to clarify on your “Robin Hood” example- in the ORIGINAL story of Robin Hood, which has been muddled through the ages, Robin Hood was stealing BACK what was taken from the poor by a corrupt governing body. It’s it great how the PUBLIC education system has erased that little tidbit?
        Just food for thought.

  19. I am a democrat, completely and fully. But while this article has some good points, you can clearly tell it was written by a democrat because it is biased towards the democratic party. It does show negative and positive of both; however, it shows more negative about the republican party and more positive toward the democratic party. If you’re going to write an article about something like this you have to make sure it is not biased in any way. As in, for republican-against democrat, against republican-for democrat, against both, or for both.

    • Citizen,

The fact that you read this as Democrat-slanted is the very reason that Republicans get elected. You are so mired in your own democratic ideology, that you can’t tell when you are being insulted. PLEASE read this again…. CAREFULLY. If we all paid just a little more attention, all the unbiased, unbigoted folks in the world would be voting Democrats into permanent power.
But, the serpent GOP has caused better folks than you and me to vote Republican in the past with their spin, don’t let it happen again.

  20. u r right you are not supposed to do what you want it may be bad, and bad for the people around you, if you want to do good there are ways u can follow as people will support you in every good step you take but resist when you take a wrong step.

Democracy is of the people, by the people, for the people. – Thomas Jefferson

    Prashanth

  21. When someone is laid off, becomes disabled, seriously ill etc., what should happen to them? Or if they are elderly and don’t have enough money to live on, what should happen to them? Should these people be left on the streets to die or should they be helped?

I am an Independent, and I think people should be helped until they can get on their feet (and it may not be possible for everyone to do so – the elderly for example). We can’t go back to the horrific days of the poorhouse, but we can do much more to ensure that our resources aren’t squandered on cheaters, illegal aliens, unwed mothers who keep having children etc.

    • I agree HOWEVER when our system of racism and capitalism systematically put the underclass where they are; therefore those that cheat and leech the system do so because it’s a cycle they’ve learned is required for survival….then what do you do?

Education is the key (how cliché’ but true)

If Republicans think that spending less money on the needy will make them go away then they must be putting all that money into personal security. I can guarantee that if the money isn’t put into education to uplift the underclass then they the rich will have to hold on tight to what they have because stupid or not, they won’t just keep killing themselves. I know I’d drive to the wealthiest neighborhood to rob and kill the one’s that took the spoon out of my child’s mouth and the books out of their schools!

  22. It is pretty easy to tell the author is a staunch Republican, the bias and spin is so thick you can cut it with a dollar bill.

The real difference is like me and my neighbor. She doesn’t want dog poop in HER yard, so she walks her dog in the park just on the other side of the fence from my back yard. When someone is looking, she picks up the poop. Somebody else will pick up the rest. She is a Republican

I scoop the dog poop out of my yard with a shovel, and fling it over the fence and blame it on HER dog. I pick up ALL the poop, and she leaves it far away from her perfect house. I am a Democrat. While I am not much better than she is, I am willing to admit what I do. Don’t ask her if she picked it all up unless you want to be lied to.

Republicans cry self reliance, and then get millions from special CORPORATE interests that want legislation enabling them to profit more without those silly little obstructions like environmental rules designed to keep our country clean, and those pesky living wage requirements their workers are organizing to get.

Democrats spend all their time making sure that the GOP and the corporations can’t create a society of extremely rich and the working poor. Minimum wage or less is the goal of employers, for even the more skilled trades.

Republicans strive for power at any cost, so they can refuse to govern when they get it. When a democrat is in power, they cry socialism and big government. When the GOP is in power they suddenly call big government ‘doing the right thing’.

Democrats are up front and will tell you when it is bad. Republicans will feed you crap, call it cake, and if you discover it is bad, they will blame it on the Democrats.

  23. I’m a disabled person, I get SSI(Supplemental Security Income), this is an income that I have a need for, I can barely walk as I have painful joint problems due to when I broke a leg(3 titanium screws in that leg and scars on both sides of the left ankle, the left ankle has never worked as well as It used to prior to 2002, I’d slipped and fallen, I received no rehab, so I had to invent My own rehab of flexing My ankle and the left foot while in bed, the left ankle joint there will start grinding after a bit of standing or walking and can be very painful) and I’d dislocated My right hip from the hip socket back in 2002 at the same time as I’d broke the leg, My weight afterwards went up, now I’m having problems w/My right knee(probably cause of what happened in 2002), I have to climb up steps using My left leg or descend right leg first as the right knee is very painful to use now, when flexed slowly I can hear a popping and grinding noise. I also have Osteoarthritis in My shoulders, lower back pain, a low performing thyroid(pills don’t help as the human body just can’t make use of the hormone pills, tried the pills, they just raised My core temp), eyesight problems, I can overheat My core temp easily and sweat can give Me painful red rashes near My hips If I do too much, anxiety, depression, concentration problems and yes I’m now near 400lbs and 6’1″ tall, I’m not disabled by choice nor do I think almost anyone who gets SSI is disabled by choice, SSA is very strict, but then alcoholics and drugs have been banned from SSI since 1994(I’m not a druggie, nor do I drink alcohol. I’ve seen the phrase online of Truly Disabled of course I’ve searched for meaning to that and I can only conclude that people say that and think that Truly Disable people are not able to be out of a wheelchair(a false Stereotype), Now I do walk a bit with a cane, for longer distances(for somewhere like say Disneyland as Its a big place with a Small World) I’d use an ECV(Electric Conveyance Vehicle). I’ve been told by private industry that what Social Security told Me is quite true, that I’m unemployable. I can’t live with My relatives, My Nephew would take Me in, but He has no room(He has only enough room for His family), My oldest Niece has no room as She lives in a 1 bedroom apartment(She dates guys, but is still a 41yr old virgin I think, I’m 51 Years old), My Youngest Niece and Her Mother(My Sister in law) have some room, but the Sister in law said I’m a stranger to Her and so I can’t live under Her roof, I can only visit when Her 3 grown up kids are there, My other relatives are all dead(Mom, Dad, Brother and Sister, Uncles, Aunts, Grandparents… I’ve outlived them all), So in a Republican world I’d be either on the streets, dead or in prison(an institution, I can take care of Myself, I just can’t earn a living anymore), As I guess to them It’s a crime to be unable to work, unless one is Truly Disabled, whatever that is…

I get $674 for SSA per month and $156.40 from the state of California and of course due to a CA policy known as cash out, no CA SSI recipient gets Food Stamps as the USDA and SSA have embargoed Food Stamps to people in CA who get SSI. Oh and I own a 12yr old car, I don’t have the income to finance a replacement, nor could I save up much as the maximum savings one can have since 1989 is $2000 for a single person or $3000 for a couple and that doesn’t go too far anymore, Congress is trying to raise that limit to $5000/$7500 of course and has been trying for Years(SSI Savers Act of 2011[H.R. 2103] as an example), But It seems Repubs in the ways and means committee are as usual an uncaring bunch of SOB’s, the old tired excuse is that a raised asset limit would only invite more people into SSI, problem is if If a person is otherwise medically qualified, getting down or below the current $2000 limit can be done so It’s not like $5000 or so in savings would get more people in, Its just a way to oppress people for no good reason outside of ideological reasons, illogical and unreasonable spite, hate and jealousy. Oh and SSI is a running joke as SSI for a good number of people Supplements nothing.

So to those who say I and others like Me shouldn’t be getting money from Government, What in the hell do You expect Me and others like Me to do?

    Die??

    • Don’t blame the republicans, as that is just ignorant. California is the easiest state for government freebies, and it’s no coincidence that they are facing a $16 Billion budget shortfall now. It’s not the fault of one party or the other. This country is systemically corrupt on all levels. Both parties have good and bad ideas. The democrats by wanting to help those hurting financially gave too much and made it too easy for the lazy deadbeats. Now the system is abused by more than half that receive assistance. The republicans, rightfully see a tremendous waste of money going to mooches and want to stop the gravy train. Both parties are right, but how do changes come around when at the heart of our government the ones who are supposed to work for us are controlled by greed and corruption?

Our current tax structure for businesses is the highest in the world, and were losing the job creators to other nations. It’s not rocket science. Eduardo Saverin, a co-founder of facebook renounced his U.S. citizenship. Why wouldn’t he want save hundreds of millions of dollars now and more in the future with tax increases coming? Who will pay any of the entitlements when they are all gone?

This country is so close to being irrepairably broken, that partisan hatred and finger pointing isn’t going to fix it. Both parties are equally to blame, but the distraction of anger keeps the American public so distracted, there is currently little hope of any true recovery. It is truly dire times for all of us. It will be certain destruction if we keep blaming each other without seeing our own faults.

    • YEP that’s exactly what your typical republican wants!! pretty sick huh?? republicans have a cow when poor people need assistant but have ZERO problem paying their hard earned tax dollars for corporate welfare!! or huge tax breaks for wealthy people!! UNREAL and they’re the part of GOD??????? of morals???????? yeah right!! Just like newt gingrich is a devote catholic!! THE REPUBLICAN PARTY what a joke!! I see why the world hates us.

  24. PLEASE, PLEASE THE REPUBLICANS WANT A ONE WORLD ORDER, THEY WANT A DICTATORSHIP, QUIT MAKING EXCUSES FOR THESE SICK PEOPLE. THE GOP COULD CARE LESS ABOUT HOW YOU AND I FEEL. GET REAL. THEIR MOTTO ONE FOR ME, ALL FOR ME. GIVE THEM ALL THE SLACK YOU WANT, NOT ME. THEY ARE THE BILDERBERGS THAT WANT TO RULE THE WORLD. RIGHT NOW THEY ARE GIVING ATTORNEYS PROBLEMS BECAUSE THEY CAN MAKE TROUBLE FOR THEM, THEY ALSO HATE THE MEDIA BECAUSE THEY PREFER SECRECY. IF GIVEN THE CHANCE THEY WOULD NOT OFFER YOU OR I A CRUMB OF A DECENT WAY OF LIFE IF THE WORLD WAS NOT LOOKING. PEOPLE THAT HAVE NOT BEEN INVOLVED WITH THESE PEOPLE DIRECTLY ARE IN THE DARK TO THEIR TRUE DIRECTION AND I HOPE YOU NEVER ARE, BUT IF YOU GET IN THAT POSITION, GOD HELP YOU!

    • Beautifully put, Susie! keep it up.

    • Wow, I think you just described Obama’s best pal, George Soros.

    • If you think there is any difference between the money behind either party, then you are incredibly naive. Look at John Corsine and the $2.4 billion that disappeared just days before MF Global declared bankruptcy. Where’s the outrage? It makes no difference who or what party is in office when the money behind the scenes is what controls the government.

Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Tim Geithner are but a few of the The Bilderberg members that are democrats. Either learn a little about something before you spew your ignorance on the world or shut up.

The political system in this nation is systemically corrupt. That includes all parties. Stop showing your ignorance and spreading the problem. Educate yourself and try to become part of the solution.

  25. ok people NO ONE wants a dictatorship. Republicans simply want a smaller government so people will stop depending on the government and get out there and work for a living. they believe you should get what you work to get, what you EARN. democrats on the other hand want the government to take care of everything for them, hold their hands and walk them through life so they never have to do anything for themselve or take responsibility for anything. and to whoever said that republicans are hipocrites for supporting the death penalty, they are putting people to death who killed other people. sounds fair to me, you kill someone you die too. and if you are religous, think of it this way: a person on death row killed someones, possibly more than one someone, the death penalty is simply sending them to hell faster, so they dont have time so mess up anyone elses life.
i dont see why the government has to be so complicated, maybe its because im on ly 18 and havent been around long enough to be corupted by all the world has to offer

    • Karlyn,

Usually independent 18 year olds are liberal, idealistic, utopian society types. and Republicans are old folks that have lived through prejudice and ignorance and are just tired of believing in their fellow man. Live a few years and look hard at the people that you see around you before making judgements. Not all poor are lazy drug or alcohol addicts. Some are that way because of other reasons beyond their control. I have an idea what you can do with that silver spoon you were born with.

what happened to you? are you really only voicing what you heard your parents and grandparents say? You must be from the south, probably Texas.

      • Your reading my mind!! I’ve been saying you’re exact statement to people for years, Theres a reasons why republicans tend to be WHITE- SOUTHERN OR SOUTHWESTERN region – MIDDLE AGED- SELFISH- BITTER- RACIST. It’s partly culture and just growing old and bitter! Whats hilarious about your typical republican is they always scream about loving JESUS and the bible but their the most segregating, hateful people in America!! Pure hypocrisy!! But lets understand the southern strategy in the 70’s by the republicans to con extremely ignorant, racist, typically poor southerners so called “CHRISTIAN EVANGELICIALS” to vote republican has bought them generators of votes!! Eisenhower was absolutely correct when he pushed civil rights bills for blacks ”WE WILL LOSE THE SOUTH FOR GENERATIONS” most of the republican base is in the south and southwest. Texas is a prime example of republican brainwashing on a 24/7 basis!! Those bible thumping macho so called tough guys are pathetic!! These people only hear idiots like limbaugh, fux news, ann coulter 24/7 theres no balance in the south at all! Thank you rupert murdoch rest in HELL you sick creature

  26. It’s probably time to get our of this country…

Kind of like when people in Germany smelled the changes in the air right before the swastika flew and those who didn’t… you know the rest.

  27. Karlyn,

Your assessment of Democrats is way off. Democrats don’t want to be taken care of, They want to be self sufficient also. BUT, in a civilized country there should be a safety net for those who’s fortunes go south, and their lives are ruined by an illness that causes medical bills out of control, bankrupting them.

Also, Medicare and Social Security are INSURANCE PROGRAMS!!!!!!! We pay in, and we take it back out. The only thing that is free is welfare, and that is because the United States people don’t want to see children starving in the greatest country on earth. Yes, there are people taking advantage of that, either they feel that a job search is hopeless, or they are young and don’t know any better. Most people have pride, and WANT to work. A lot of people don’t have a family or friends that can help them get jobs.

How can you make such sweeping statements that all Democrats are basically lazy? That’s like saying that all Republicans are rich, greedy, ignorant bible thumpers that want to force their morality on everyone else, refusing to care about their fellow citizens. nobody is saying THAT, are they?

Please try to live in reality, not in an idealistic world where everyone has the same privileges. This is AMERICA!! where there are only the Super Rich, the poor, and the stupid.

  28. My (Political) Beliefs:

    Abortion is a womans choice.
Birth control should be preached in schools.
People who are unfit to bear children should not be allowed to breed.
Anyone who is not a convicted felon or mentally unstable should be able to own and bear guns.
Death penalty is justified when there is no doubt of guilt in murder, rape or crimes involving harming another person.
The government should provide us with effective means of transportation and a good environment to let us live long and healthy lives. Roads need to be maintained. Climate change is happening and needs to be addressed, not ignored.
The government should provide for the citizens when they are in dire times. Economically or after a major disaster. But it should be to get them back on their feet, not be a lifestyle.
Taxes have to be collected to pay for these endeavors.
Drugs should be legalized and taxed. Of course you’d need a prescription for them.

These are my main views. Am I Rep or am I Dem?
I hate the thought of being a Rep, because I feel they are controlled by Fox News, which is owned by a foreigner and is anti-American. I don’t relish the thought of being a Dem either, I like bathing regularly and don’t smoke pot.

    • Murdoch is a naturalized US citizen. Did it ever occur to you that Soros was also born a foreigner but is now a US citizen? He’s a Jew from Hungary who turned on his fellow Jews during WWII and helped confiscate property of Jews being sent to the concentration camps.

      • Why don’t you research rupert murdoch ok that miserable little creep has brainwashed so many half wit republicans it’s a shame

  29. I wish there were no categories. It seems like by confining yourself to one category, even that of Independent, you are expected to comply directly with the overall thinking of the group. As a result, some senators and reps can’t vote for what they truly believe, or what they know to be right, without being shunned by their party.
But, then again, I guess I’m too young to understand it all completely. One day maybe.

    • Quite true. I’m a Republican for voting purposes in primaries. However, I realize that not only must party members usually conform to the party line, they must raise lots of campaign funds for the party in order to receive plum assignments.

  30. Picture a dog that has lost a leg. Democrats will help that dog by giving it an artificial leg so it’ll have four legs to stand on.

Republicans will help the dog by chopping off another leg. If a second leg is chopped off, diagonal to the first, the dog will have two legs to stand on; those legs may get strong.

Just as the dog with only two legs to stand on gains greater strength in the legs that remain, so the GOP argues that the poor, the unemployed, the deaf, dumb, blind and crippled, with far fewer benefits from the government will develop their own resources and be better able to stand forth in American society.

The GOP is not heartless. They will not pay taxes to help you out, or your dog, but they will have you in their prayers.”

  31. The wall that I see in the communication and understanding between the two is this: Republicans do not believe in equality; they believe in working for your status. Republicans think that Democrats believe in socialism – that everyone should receive the same pay, benefits, etc. no matter how much you work. That’s not been my experience with Democrats.

From my experience and observation: Democrats (especially progressives) also believe in capitalism and working to achieve one’s status, BUT… we are insistent upon people or institutions playing fairly by a set of rules, n0t only in working your way up, but also after you arrive there. We believe in equal opportunity, and that the government should regulate to ensure that equal opportunity is available to all. Not all people aim to be wealthy in their jobs, but we expect to be able to make decent wages and be able to maintain a decent lifestyle. We feel we need a regulatory government to protect the wellbeing of employees, consumers and the environment from greedy companies who would exploit them to make a profit. We are against corporatism and crony capitalism. Wealth should not buy political favoritism.

In a way we’re kind of caught between a rock and a hard place in the fact that, although we realize we need government intervention to protect us from corporate abuses, we admit that government can be overly-intrusive and inefficient. That said, we’d rather opt for having a bad regulator than having NO regulator. Republicans are generally in favor of non-intervention by the government in financial/business affairs. Democrats feel that this is leaving the door open to abuse by companies/ corporations. Republicans think that abusive business practices with magically work against the abusers and they’ll somehow be weeded out through a kind of natural selection. Democrats fear that abusive businesses will succeed because of unethical behavior. We are okay with capitalism, but not cutthroat capitalism.

  32. I think everyone needs to quit looking at a person’s political party because everyone’s views are different. You can’t simply sum up someones views by saying they are a Democrat or Republican, or Independent and so on, especially since everyones opinion on what each political party stands for is different as well. You need to see what the person believes, and no matter what everyone is selfish to some degree. Both parties have they’re good candidates and there bad candidates but its based on how we see them, just look at the founding of America some see it as a rising of a nation while others (me included) see it as the destruction of another people which is so hypocrytical because we as Americans were trying to get away from things like that. So to sum it up EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT SO YOU SHOULDN’T GENERALIZE.

P.S. I am an “independent” meaning I don’t pick a party and vote for them, but most of the time I swing to the right but not too hard.

  33. My mother-in-law is a republican. Our furnace went out so she lent us the money to fix it. Her daughter is unemployed so I had to sell my car to pay her back. She’s a millionaire. I’m a democrat.

  34. I tend to vote Republican so I can act like a Democrat.

  35. Why a difference bettween the democrate and the republican when they suppose to have the same mission. They not divided

    • The mission is to guide this country in justice and prosperity. The problem is how to get there. People have honest, and sometimes not so honest, differences of opinion on how to get there.

  36. Nice comments Recce1.

Extremism on both sides yields a scale that can never balance, always see-sawing to either side until one day one falls off. It seems to me that as proud as I am to call myself an American, the path of our country is moving inevitably towards revolution or destruction. This may sound extreme and sensational, but I am not suggesting that it will happen any time in the near future. I fully doubt I or my children will be alive to see it. However, the further divided the two dominant parties in this country become with little hope for the advancement of an alternative due to the ingrained state of politics that seems to deepen its roots of control with every passing election and regime, the closer we come to a precipice.

  37. GREETINGS! – W O W – quite a plethora of commentary … well, being a POLI-SCI Grad, Officer Holder, Neighborhood Guy and the like, our Government was founded on the principles of Debate, Discussion, Deliberation and a painfully-slow process to ‘compromise’.

Our values are across-the-board respected, we have a diversion of religious beliefs, multiple languages and wonderful culture to always celebrate … especially with the worldwide organization of JAYCEES / Junior Cha,ber International.

I’m worried currently with lots of our DISABLED Young Adults .. and the SSI Program that needs to index and elevate proportionately their resource thresholds .. many of these people through accidents, illnesses and sicknesses – particularly while attending school and working – were befallen with such mental and physical disabilities.

I see in the Congress the proposed bill SSI SAVERS ACT ~ H.R. 2103 (4937) and contact your Congressperson to support this proposed amendment to the SSA law and kindly encourage your Senators to introduce in their chamber as well.

Best Wishes To America and A Blessed Passover & Easter to everyone!

  38. Biased article

  39. Wasteful article.

It could have simply stated by George Wallace in 1968:

“There’s not a dime’s worth of difference between the Republicans and Democrats.”

  40. Simply put….

Democrats: This party’s core philosophy can be synopsized in a quote from John Winthrop’s “City Upon A Hill”….

“We must love one another, we must bare one another’s burdens, make others’ conditions our own. We must rejoice together, mourn together, labor together, suffer together, always having before our eyes a community where we are all members of the same body”

Republicans: This party’s core philosophy can also be synopsized in a quote from Ayn Rand…

“The basic social principle of the Objectivist ethics is that just as life is an end in itself, so every living human being is an end in himself, not the means to the ends or the welfare of others — and, therefore, that man must live for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself. To live for his own sake means that the achievement of his own happiness is man’s highest moral purpose”

… and the difference between these two parties are this simple.

    • Very well put, which is why I get so upset with republicans they always want to thump the bible and talk about how they LOVE JESUS and one second later tell poor people to DIE and go to HELL!! These phoney two bit religious fools wanted to nail Clinton to the wall for lying about his adultery but COMPLETELY forgive human waste like newt gringrich- larry graig- mark sanford- george rekkers- rush limbaugh (DRUG USER) bill o’reilly (HARRASSING A CO WORKER WITH PHONE SEX CALLS) ECT ECT ECT see boys and girls these fake christians believe JESUS only forgive republicans!! UNREAL!!! you can’t fool GOD!!

  41. Safe to say your definitely a Republican
Missed a few things out there, maybe next time learn what a even handed comparison is.

  42. i hate niggers hope obama get the hell out of office.

    • redneckkk, no doubt you’re a progressive agent provocateur. I saw your type at Tea Party rallies pretending to be Nazis so as to try to embarrass the groups. They were confronted by Tea Party organizers and ran when the newspeople showed up to witness their duplicity. So go back to your SEIU union hall or to ACORN .

    • Moderators, why have you allowed redneckkk’s comment to stand?

    • It’s hilarious how republicans scream RACISM IS DEAD! you keep it alive by talking about. But every website I go to about politics theres a flood of inbreed shit kickers like this special needs diaper wearing mut! redneckkk is why most civilized human beings laugh at the gop

  43. Okay so i’ve viewed multiple comments above. A lot of them are utterly stupid and most (if not all) are biased. If you have a side that’s the one you root for. It’s human nature. Even those who think they are above (not be mistaken as better than) the controversy and are voice of reason, find themselves in a heated debate with someone. Everyone throws around terms such as “facist” and “liberal”. Honesly I just came to a realization that I was unaware of the differences between the parties. I decided to Google it. This was the top link. Both parties have their selfish sides. Republicans belive that everyone should help themselves and have less government interaction. However, democrats belive that another must fish out their own money (of course including the government) to help them get their lives that they screwed up back in track. I belive that if i work hard for something, I don’t owe anybody anything by law and I’m entitled to what I work for. I also strongly belive in philanthropy and that you should help someone who’s in need. That’s simple good nature. So here is what I’ve concluded: The republican party will probably appeal more so to the upper middle class to rich person. Democracy will likely side the lower middle class to poor type. I feel I should say that I’m fully aware that I’ve entered a “battle” myself. Someone going to look at this and be that “one” to disagree with almost everything I’ve typed. I’m just eager to find out who and what the challenge will be. Also take notice of how I’ve used basic speech pattern. The common person can understand this and is not only ledgible to poloticans. If you’re anything like me, you have way too much to do with your life than get absorbed into the boring world of polotics. I have to commit suicide if someone told me that’s what I’d have to do with the rest of my life. On the ending note, there’s no one or true way to research fully political parties. There will always be a biased side. I assume it’s something you just have to know or learn over the years. I’m going to the second Google link. Maybe it’s a little bit more controlled and less cluttered. Now go ahead. Reply on how ignorant you must think I am. Who’s going to contradict first? I can’t wait to find out. I’m done now. Goodbye.

    • As you mentioned, a lot of people use the words “fascist” and “fascism.” But what is fascism? Most think it’s the sound of jackboots in the street as occurred tragically in Nazi Germany. However, that’s usually not so.

Here’s an excellent definition that I found on the internet devoid of all the inflammatory rhetoric. “Fascism is an economic model in which the state dictates the utilization of privately held assets to achieve public policy goals.”

Is this not what is happening in the US today? Is not our federal government using it’s powers of taxation and regulations to force whole sectors of our economy to act in a manner the government bureaucrats want them to for the good of the people, for social justice, for equality, for fairness?

Fascism can wear a velvet glove, albeit with an iron fist inside.

By the way, fascism is but one side of a coin. The other side is socialism. Fascism forces companies to supports its agenda. Socialism then takes over those companies to use the assets directly for its agenda.

In either case, the people lose.

  44. I also relized I’ve spelled politics incorrectly as polotics in the comment above. Please save your breath (or type). I’ve made several other gramatical errors. I brought this to a notice because I’ve seen several immature retaliations on gramatical weaknesses. It’s funny how in these type of comment set-ups that HQs aruguements you’re expected to be perfect in every way possible. But then again if you were, there’d be nothing to challenge which is what most of you thrive on.

  45. i’m 12 and every website i look at every person i ask gives me completely different answers. truly i believe this is just another way to make us as humans fight more. but i’d still like to know …. v.v it bugs me how i always get differant answers

  46. The difference between Rep and dems is that Reps know how to BS better . They know what folks want to hear. They love to get into wars they can never finish. Remember Bush? Not so important to find Bin Laden.. They love to say every man has to pull up his boot straps and cut but have no qualms about spending $350 million on a fighter jet cause they have to have their toys.

  47. Politics are something else.

  48. TOTALLY true.I think America should be for what they say. ”one nation under GOD”etc. It is sad Americans won’t be able to walk around in public with a bible!!!!!!!!!!:( GO CHRISTIANS

  49. you article is biased. I was honestly looking for “the truth” unbiased.

  50. I am a Republican and I don’t believe womens rights should be legalized or criminalized. The idea that there needs to be a law for anything as personal as medical decisions or voting is repugnant. I thought the same of abolition when I was a child, I thought who are these people? Answer: Democrats

  51. The labels Republican and Democrat has morphed into something different than it they were a century ago – similar to Islam being hijacked by radical Muslims/Jihadists. Today you are either a conservative or a liberal (or libertarian, having many conservative values). Here are sopme of the differences this article left out:

    1) CONSERVATIVES –> for a smaller government, individual rights and responsibilities, capitalism and free market, lower taxes, laws & social decisions made at the state level, the people control the government and elect who represents the people, spend more on military and national security, the right to earn equality, support Constitutional compliance and background checks on candidates for Office of the President…

    2) LIBERALS (leaning towards Marxism, some traits of communism): – for larger more powerful government and all decisions come from the federal government, government has control over individuals (government rules the people), the government to make all social, political, domestic decisions, government has ALL the answers and all ideas come from the federal government, pays for its larger government size with higher taxes, spends less on military and more on welfare and social programs, legislates equality instead of earning equality, naively ignores the Constitution and proof of executive corruption and deceit as long as their candidate gets elected, allows known foreigners and suspected frauds and know Muslims to run the country with impunity, ignores the fact that Islam and democracy are not compatible (A Muslim president in charge of a “democracy” (The USA is actually a Constitutional Republic … as long a the current undocumented worker that has been squatting in the White House is a 1-term president).

    • My apologies for the typos (was in a hurry and usually check for typos).

      • Your definitions of republicans and liberals are a complete joke, I respect you having a opinion but I’m a liberal and your so far off base it’s leads me to not taking you seriously. Democrats are basically what republicans use to be about 50 years ago and republicans have purposely removed ALL moderates from they’re party. Ronald regan would be crucified if he were alive today running as a republican!! Eisenhower would have be tared and feathered!! Today’s republican party is basically a club for ANGRY bitter old white males, the gops is 89% WHITE (SOURCE) http://www.galloppoll.com any intelligent person with a brain has to be bothered by the utter lack of diversity!

        • YOU ARE 100% CORRECT!! WHY DOESN’T EVERYONE KNOW THIS?

        • I Think oBama should go back to Kenya

          • @Al porrito you poor misguided idiot, what’s wrong grampy? pissed off that I told the truth about your ship of fools?? humm? Listen father time! old racist BAST*RDS like you are exactly why your republican party is dying! literally! Your Obama needs to go back to Kenya is so typical of you screwball racist half wits! What truly funny about racist pond scum like you is after saying some BS like that you wonder why black people don vote republican?!!! LMAO You pathetic racist republicans get a hard on saying ”black people are on the democrat plantation” first off Bubba the dems are full of SH*T too! but at least their not stupid enough to insult black people hispanics, women, muslims on a daily basis!! At least the democratic party has diversify!! unlike the republican party which is 89% WHITE!! That plantation crack always amused me white republicans who normally can’t stand black people all the sudden care how black people vote once every 4 yrs in November!! You pathetic racist fools are amazing! Hey @Al porrito theres a reason Willard rommey has 0.0% of the black vote and at best 20% of the hispanic vote!! you fossil don’t you get it?? it the 21st century AS*HAT!! winning elections counting on WHITE racist old folks isn’t going to fly! Sorry Bubba this isn’t the america you were born in anymore!! and you see it! you know it!! thats why you’re confederate diaper wearing AS* is PISSED!! Listen @Al porrito jumping you’re toothless AS* on the internet is going to magically make the gop a worthy party their dying out Bubba!! decent americans, americans with an IQ over 50 aren’t buying that pile of confederate BS!! Sorry! the southern strategy worked very nicely for you! your party happily scooped up all those racist worthiness dixicrats and you locked up the south for generations! but @Al porrito times are a changin’ those racist dillbillies from Texas Louisiana, Utah, South Carolina aren’t gonna save your pathetic party! Now go find your boyfriend @reece and get a room! because what you two SH*T kickers will be doing in that motel room is exactly what Obama is going to do to the gop!

          • Pardon my typo @Al porrito I meant ”worthless” not worthiness sorry and for the record it’s ”don’t” not ”don” simple typing error.

          • you’re not liked very much………. and you’re pretty biased……. so as a teenager wanting to vote in this election, i would NOT listen to your opinion…… and be more liberal!!! hoorah for welfare and equality for all!!!!!

          • I’m sure if he wanted to go back he would. 1 of 3 people you see in the U.S. is from somewhere other than the U.S., should they go back too? Come on dude is 2012!!

        • thank you knight4444 for making me laugh and for giving it right back.
          l

          • Not problem republicans just make me sick!! their hypocrisy is legendary their selective memories are laughable their tv and radio gods have loaded their heads with so much BS they make Archie bunker look like Einstein!! Fux news has ripped this country apart by making your typical clueless republican look jaw dropping retarted! Listen republicans if you wanna play bad ass tough guy with me you better bring a lunch! because this liberal hits back!!! so when I completely expose your bag of BS don’t start that cry baby bullshit!!! any party that runs a billion dollar magic underwear wanna be ”god” mormon is is deep crap!! the republican party is a joke!! hows Sarah palin doing??? can she still see Russia from her door step??? what a dumb ass!!!

          • LOL! You tell him!

          • I totally agree with Knight4444 for sticking it to the GOP (Group Of Peck-o-Woods) and telling the truth about their ruthlessness. Keep up the good work. Bless you brother.

          • Funny, Democrats are for minorities? Do some research, Democrats voted against the civil rights movement, Republicans wanted equal treatment for minorities, also, Martin Luther King, identified with the Republicans, as did Abraham Lincoln…..Republican. Keep voting Democrat, see what happens. When you can’t own guns, property, healthcare fails, because nobody wants to study to be a Dr. when they are taxed 70% of their pay, when everything you work for your whole life can’t be passed to your children because of the crazy inheritance taxes levied against the people. Democrats are a waste. End of discussion. God Bless America and the REPUBLIC!!!!!!!

        • You are an idiot! your probably a jobless punk that collects welfare! I for one do not want to pay for other peoples medical and cellphone bills, I believe that what ever I have I worked hard for and I deserve it! I don’t just sit on my ass and wait for the government to send me my check!

          • I have to say that for me, I have beliefs that teeter on both sides but I’m moreover a republican than a democrat in my thinking and beliefs. I’m an entrepreneur with two businesses. I’m always looking to reduce my taxes and I’ve always paid what’s owed. I simply don’t want to see this country turning into the welfare state that I see it’s doing now. I could go on but suffice it to say, I believe in free market capitalism and equal rights for all. This is unusual, I usually read the comments rather than post.

        • Not a joke a fact this is the overwhelming average you may not fall into the average but this is the definition build a bridge and get over it.

        • Deb Yes and I agree,
Obama will, if he gets 4 more years, crash the ecomony . Don’t forget Bernanke had everything under control before the crash of the world financial system based on our dollar. He still has everything under control or so he would have you believe. He is just one of 70 or more people Obama has sucking your money away.
The reason we are in this disaster is the repeal of the glass steagall act and both parties supported this.
So what do we do if neither party supports the working class…………vote everyone out after one term.Don’t forget both parties supported the NAFTA act so if you think being a demwit or a reject will protect your job or your savings or give you an even break think again.

        • OMG–you are sold into Marxism. His definitions are correct. Liberalism is not to be confused with liberty–both parties want that, just have different ideas about how to get it. I, as a conservative, believe that liberty begins with the people (the individual), whilst you believe that liberty begins with the government. The problem with your view is that no-one is ever really given liberty. Once taken its never returned. Bequeath your rights sparingly.

Oh and Reagan was a conservative. Quit trying to steal our leaders since you have none of your own.

        • Democrats are what Republicans use to be 50 years ago? Are you sure moron? Democrats are socialists they do have some commie traits! 50 years ago Republicans were pro-capitalism as they are today and actually back then Republicans were fighting against FDR’s socialist New Deal.

      • No problem Al,
I am an independent and I disagree that democrats want the Government to do everything. What specifically are you referring to? Maybe democrats just want everyone who gets health care to pay for it. That’s why I support Obamas health care plan, which was once Romney’s plan.

I am concerned about some degree of social equality, but not to the extreme levels that you describe. I think it’s concerning that the bottom 80% of Americans control only 7% of America’s wealth. 20 years ago the bottom 80% controlled 8.4% of the wealth. That’s a 20% decline in just 20 years. All Americans should be concerned. I don’t believe that shifting even more of the tax burden from the rich to the poor will help the general economy.

I’m not sure why, but I still trust my government more than the global corporations that control it.

I view the repeal of the Glass Steagall Act and the de-regulation of derivatives as the greatest failure of government in my lifetime (Thank you Bill Clinton and George W). I blame the free markets for the housing crash and the resulting bank bailouts. Contrary to popular belief, the housing crash was not caused by Fannie Mae and Freda Mac. They never held more than 10% of the subprime mortgages. It’s like blaming unions for the unemployment crisis. Only 12.4% of American workers are unionized.

The following video changed my view of the world.
University of Colorado professor explains the exponential function
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umFnrvcS6AQ

        • I’m a independent myself but the republicans are destroying the middle class destroying race relations destroying women’s rights giving insane tax breaks for millionaires and screwing poor people like whores. the top 1% owns like 80% OF THE WEALTH!! thats not a goddamn ACCIDENT!! it’s orchestrated by the republican party!

          • Have a falafel sandwich and calm down , pls change ur name from knight4444 to sheep0000

          • You by definition are a liberal democrat

          • Classic example of “I’m an independent” BUT THE REPUBLICANS MUST DIE!! Typical liberal underhanded lying sack of horse pucky, you by definition need to go blow Obama because it’s your nature

          • Knight…? You’re an Independent? An Independent is in between both political parties. It seems to me you’re very anti-conservative. That’s definitely not an independent view. I hate how people tarnish the title of being an independent by saying you’re an “Independent” just to make your real political affiliation that much more acceptable. You are not an Independent. Don’t go around saying you are.

    • By the way it’s so outrageously obvious your a republican or a libertarian because your utter lack of knowledge about politics is jar dropping!! LOL you’ve been watching fux news again. You better come stronger than that rush limbaugh, glen beck alternate universe flat earth nonsense SERIOUSLY

      • knight4444, I take it we should be watching MSNBC which dishonestly edited comment by Goeroge Zimmerman to make him like a racist, maybe in an effort to get him lynched, and of Romney’s comments on the creativity of private enterprise.

Maybe you’d have us watch such stalwart reporters and commentators as Ed Schultz, Bill Mayer, Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, Tavis Smiley, Joe Klein, or Dan Rather who was fired for falsifying a report about Bush.

By the way, when did Beck advocate a flat earth theory? Oh, I get it, you’re trying to keep company with the above benighted people.

        • Sir I haven’t watched cable tv in almost 2 yrs so your assumption is wrong, two, I’m not sure why you’re babbling about george zimmerman? are you well? and what does “BENIGHTEN” mean? dude didn’t your nurse give you your meds today? Sir you reek of the foul odor of either a screwball right nut or a pot smoking libertarian, either way you don’t want to cross brains with me Mr. peabody because if your obviously limited vocabulary using words like “BENIGHTEN” you’ll be like a sheep lead to the slaughter. “BENIGHTEN” LOL you’re funny!

          • knight4444, obviously you’d rather resort to ad hominem attacks, puerile name calling, and boorishness rather than discuss an issue cogently. I guess that’s par for a progressive. In any event, I now believe you’re also benighted.

That you don’t understand my reference to the MSM like the dishonest and discredited NBC (and now ABC) because you tried to defame Beck and Limbaugh while admitting you haven’t watched FOX in two year isn’t really that surprising coming from an aliterate person like you.

So as not to leave you inerudite, the word BENIGHTED, not benighten, means according to Dictionary.com:

            1. intellectually or morally ignorant; unenlightened: benighted ages of barbarism and superstition.
            2. overtaken by darkness or night.

            Synonyms
            1. backward, primitive, crude, uncultivated.

I won’t laugh at or mock you as I find you quite lugubrious.

My advice, have a Saul experience.
            Shalom

          • seems to me knight4444 all you can do is insult people and mispell or use the wrong word to describe your immature drug induced ranting. Just saying.

        • Dude you really need to get a life! I guarantee that you’re a over 65 yr old white social security loney old fool who’s only contact with actually human beings are via the internet! Listen fella stop saying stupid shit and maybe just maybe people will stop personally attacking you. Republicans always cry like little girls when someone calls them out on their BS!! If you can’t stand the heat stay the hell off the internet pops!! Oh yes ”benighted” never used the word before grandpa but in all honesty truth be known I guarantee you ”benighted” isn’t a commonly known word with anybody! you get an ” A” gramps happy now??? old fool

        • ”benighted” that’s hilarious thank you for expanding my vocabulary but using words from the 13th century may sound cute it still doesn’t have anything to do with being wrong! Pops no offensive but using a word from 700 plus years ago will never, turn your hearing aid up never win you a debate! But thank you for the ”benighted” deal I’ll remember it but I’ll never use it. lol Bill o’reilly likes to sound intelligent using prebiblical words every now and then and the point is??? he’s still ignorant as hell! I’ve watched rap stars, teenagers debate him and kick his ass!! So maybe Bill is ”benighted” lol

          • Recce1 So, you make it clear that you do not care to increase your vocabulary, and aren’t among those well-read enough to recognize the word ‘benighted’. Nor do you seem to want to understand the other party. I am truly sorry. You cannot debate properly and successfully if you do not know your opponent. Therefore in you poor enlightened and BENIGHTED condition the only ammunition you have is name calling and personal insults.

        • @reece1 heres a suggestion MR. “BENIGHTED” why don’t you try reading that horse SH*T you threw up here and tell everybody who “GOEROGE” Zimmerman is??? @reece1 you’re absolute proof that watching fux news kills brain cells! you idiot Now excuse me while I kick the SH*T out of your girlfriend @Al porrito.

        • Oh my bad! tell everybody who “BILL MAYER” is??? you mean Bill Mahar right?? you idiot! listen grandpa before you bring your sorry old worn out republican rear end here trying to ”school” somebody you should learn how to spell first! Because anyone reading your BS must certainly be laughing at you after that “BENIGHTED” BS comment!! You’re exactly what I thought you were! A fake! a so called intelligent human being! that Googles words like “BENIGHTED” to con people into thinking you’re somewhat smart! @reece1 you’re a fraud! Now take your girlfriend @Al porrito and beat it!!

          • Sorry again I meant Bill Maher not Bill Mahar sorry I haven’t seen him in over two years! my apologies @reese

    • The author I believe really tried to be as fair as he could considering his obvious Right-leaning politics. Some of his an a lot of other Conservative (and a few outright RW whackos) posters here have tried to box in Democrats as weak, sniveling little Communists and the references to our “foreign, Muslim, Communist President” were veiled very thinly.

However, while RWnutjobs–sorry ‘Conservatives’ always believe they are right, they are driven by firm Christian based ideology that EXCLUDES any room for diversity, which is where the ‘communist’ label comes in.

In actuality, most moderate Democrats, are just normal, red-blooded Americans that have guns for hunting and protection, believe in individual responsibility but don’t leave the less fortunate behind, allow people to have their OWN religious beliefs,(be it muslim, buddhist, jew, or shinto) and believe that the ever widening gap between rich and poor is the biggest problem facing the world today.

The Republicans would rather pay all the ‘other’ non white races peanuts, keep them in ghettos, and then cut off their welfare in order to stop them from breeding and further diluting their white superiority, while enjoying all the government benefits like corporate welfare, farm subsidies, oil subsidies and tax cuts for the upper class so called “job creators.” Of course those “jobs” are really nothing more than 35 hour a week minimum wage jobs.

Hows that for a “fair” assessment?

  52. This ridiculous page is so nonsensical I see why nobody has resonded, well accept me, lol

    • Why dont you all shut up I would not vote for any of you or your kindergarten comments

      • @sam you’re a republican alright!! listen Bubba when your ben gay, viagra soaked butt decides to jump on the internet to try to insult somebody try using spell check or a dictionary!! ”jealous” isn’t spelled “JELOUSE”” LMAO you idiot!! let me guess, you’re a republican from the south???? LOL and republicans wonder why civilized intelligent people laugh at you!! just remember this Bubba, Obama and the majority of america don’t like you and Rommey!! your ”great white dope” got his ass handed to him by over 3 million votes!!! Obama and the majority of america voted for Obama over McCain and the MILF by over 8 million votes!! LMAO the republican party is in DEEP SH*T

    • yeah Knight, you’re the king of your own little kingdom, huh?

  53. why would you trust the free market to create a good society?
we’re talking about the same market system that created and made slavery profitable. we’re talking about the same system that crushed the proletariot so far in the mud that they turned to radical communism for relief.
why would you trust the state gov’t to maintain freedom better than a federal gov’t?
we’re talking about states that disenfranchised blacks and hispanics for centuries, until the federal government forced them to stop.
my opinion, is that it is better to put power in the hands of an accountable government elected by the people than putting power in the hands of an unaccountable plutocracy of business elites who look down on the poor as little more than tools to be used and discarded.

    • Capitalism isn’t necessarily bad it’s the toxic capitalism the unregulated capitalism that big business loves, it’s the nonsense idiot republicans scream for! It’s hilarious listening to some stupid moron republican from EAST FUCKING EGYPT screaming WE NEED FREE MARKETS!! WITHOUT THE GOVERNMENT GETTING IN THE WAY!!! incredible! some back woods farmer who doesn’t even know the definition of terms of economics screaming like a fool about deregulation!! This is a by product of fux news teaching simple minded idiots to be even dumber!!!

      • May I suggest seeking some anger management counseling? I see many of your posts being obnoxious and borderline antagonistic. I mean no harm, simply an observation. Take care.

        • Who’s angry? I just exposing the blatant hypocrisy of todays republican party! if you perceive that as being hostel you’re mistaken! and you’re comment about the welfare state is typical of the republican media brainwashing low information individuals. You keep watching FUX and racist boy limbaugh because they depend on bright intelligent people like you! May I suggests some counselling for you? just saying

    • Thank goodness for businesses who employee people to keep our great nation from becoming totally dependent on government. If you want to live in a socialist country, move and see how women and children are treated. Everything is censored and you do as your told or else you may get your head cut off. It is unfortunate you can’t go back and live during the time was Hitler was in power. He killed so people and look at the suffering they experienced. Remember how the Jews were the target community??? What if the government in the USA decided to select a certain audience of people to eliminate. The more control the government has the less you’ll have as an individual.

  54. You forgot to say that Republicans think that Democrats are full of shit, and that Democrats think shit is full of Republicans.

  55. Hey @reese your beloved republican party train wreck convention is rearing its ugly head! It’s hilarious listening to teabag boy Ryan talk about his musical taste AC/DC Zepplin was priceless!! typical white guy republican taste LMAO. And of course the crowd which was 95% WHITE and over 55 went wild! Ryan is preaching to the choir nobody but middle age WHITE america gives a damn about AC/DC!! Willard rommny has according to gallop 0.0% of the black vote and 20% of the hispanic vote and that’s only because of their religious beliefs and nothing else. The republican party is 89% WHITE 37% over 65 yrs old!! get my drift grandpa? The senior citizens that dominate your party aren’t very ”benighted’ I guarantee you.

  56. I know for a fact if you watch fox news you wont like this or you wont finish it, but if you truly love america you should finish it and get more informed then just what fox news says and get both sides of the story, And the men I talk about are more in likely nice but are just stupid.

Anyone who believes what Glen Bech, Rush Limbaugh, or Donald Trump say you are an idiot because Glen Bech is a radical idiot and Rush Limbaugh is a complete dumb ass radical and Donald Trump is a complete and utter retard who has no idea what he is saying and should not even be aloud to talk about politics same as the other two. Yes there are radicals on the democratic side but at the least they are not stupid and talk about a president who wasn’t born in america. My first argument is that you are not aloud to be a president if you are not from this country and i am pretty damn sure they would do a background check to make sure of that and if you think Hawaii is not part of the united states you should check your resources that is not fox news because we were given Hawaii by the Hawaiian Government to have control over it in fear that the Japan empire would invade them so they would rather have a democracy run them then a empire, and that is how we came in control of Hawaii. and before you say i am wrong try checking a history book and i know more about this because i am currently in world history as a freshman and just learned about this last weak. my second argument is that either the three people i listed earlier are either bribed or just mentally incapable of checking a text book or going to library or using a reliable internet source. My third argument is that our government is corrupt, and I know why, our government is corrupt because the two political parties are bought and payed for and what i mean by that is that the political parties in the u.s. government are bribed by big business types like Romney. If you look at many other countries have more than two political parties and the reason for that is that it is expensive to buy out more than two political parties, like if you look at Germany they have 12 political parties ( six in the Bundestag or the EP, and 6 state parliaments) and the reason it is good to have more than 2 political parties is that it’s expensive to bribe 12 different political parties. And one more thing about what is going on in this country about gay marriage is not even what should be the main problem, What should be the main problems are the economy and the fact that there are no jobs and that big corporations get away with outsourcing jobs, I personally think if you outsource jobs you should be taxed more than the amount of what it would cost to hire people that are american citizens, And i think that minimum wage should be enough to live off of for example the Australian government federal minimum wage is A$19.40 ($25.37 U.S. dollars) now maybe $25.37 to much but at least minimum wage should be $17 or $18, maybe more.

    • Obama was born in the united states i was not saying he wasn’t at the beginning i was saying that if you say he wasn’t your stupid

    • I 110% agree with you on america needed more than two dominant parties!! because both parties are on the corporate payroll!! republicans have completely sold their souls to the corporate interests and dems especially ”bluepdog” dems don’t work for the people they should be treated like what Thomas Jefferson did to a another man he thought was a trader!! We don’t have a democracy in america actually we haven’t had a democracy since the mid 1800’s when the railroads were bribing politicians! the american political system is pretty much broken to the point of no return!! at the end of the day money always seems to win!!

    • If that were the minimum wage then all business would go broke. Why do people only think of themselves and not the effects on the country as a whole?

  57. Difference between democrats and republican?? well being that the democratic party was the pro slave anti minority party the party of the Nathan bedford founder of the kkk. The democratic party was so out of control a democratic senator from S.C. actually shot and killed a republican senator on the senate floor arguing slavary issues. The democratic party was no friend for black people at all! They’ve been outwardly racist for over 100 yrs! up until president Johnson in 1964 (I BELIEVE) signed civil rights for black people and Johnson said ”we lost the south for generations to come. That really when the republican party went from being a party of Fredrick Douglas and 99.99999999999% of blacks wanted as their party to the ugly filthy racist they basically are now. But 1964 changed everything! the republican party wanting to fill the vacuum of angry white southern racist democrats (DIXIECRATS) happily accepted those racist and that’s documented history. The republican party of 1865 was a sane, proud, governing political group! Abe Lincoln even though he didn’t fully believe blacks were 100% human knew that allowing the south to have slave labor was a force to be reckoned with! economically the south had a huge advantage over the north who through the efforts of many good true white christians and black people themselves didn’t believe slavary was moral. Anyway the point is the two parties changed radically around 1964 the dems desperate for votes embraced the African american group for votes and the republican party desperate for votes embraced the dixiecrats. Now if anyone wants to talk about another extremely radically change in both parties go back to the 80’s when the republican party made an unholy alliance with the southern churches or religious right! Now you wanna talk about two phony worthless organizations?? it doesn’t get any more pathetic than these two con artist parties!!

  58. recce1 your so un-informed in politics and the U.S. government I actually feel bad for you and that is rare because I don’t feel sympathy vary often. And for you Al Thompson you’re just the same you are
un-informed and don’t even have a chance at winning a debate in politics with me and that’s sad cause i am a 14 year old freshmen and i am more informed than you because i spend my free time watch MSNBC and Fox news and than i research on the internet about politics and the U.S. government, and the reason i do all of that is because i want to be informed and both sides of the story and be able to compromise with a republican and be better informed in politics and i have to say that must of the stuff that they say on fox news a complete bullshit every day all i hear and see coming out of there mouths is fucking bullshit and does not even make a little sense so before you try to debate with me or knight4444 try to be better informed in politics and what is really going on in this country that’s not gay marriage and if you can guess those two things i might think you have a little bit of a brain ( and the two things are not hurricane Issac or the RNC) Hint: it has something to do with economics and corporations.

pardon all of my foul language i am sorry about the language

    • Thank you @nighhttime! it’s hilarious you know more about politics at the age of 14 than many of these so called republican old timers!! LMAO and don’t stop researching information on your own @nighhttime because look what happens to republicans that depend on fux news to educate them!! Their heads are so far stuck up their AS*ES they don’t even know up from down!!
