Baptist vs Pentecostal

Baptist and Pentecostal are different groups of Christianity. One can come across many similarities between the two groups but still they have certain differences. Though the Baptists and Pentecostals have the same belief with regard to Trinity, the Pentecostals are seen to lean more towards the Spirit and Baptism of Holy Spirit.

The Pentecostals are noisier when praying than the Baptists. The Baptists sing mainly hymns and pray quietly. On the other hand, Pentecostals will sing and pray loudly.

When the Baptists think that tongues and direct revelation are no more relevant, the Pentecostals still believe in things like mystical spiritual language.

The Baptists think that contemporary music is wrong and Baptist women dress very modestly. On the other hand, Pentecostal women long dresses and do not wear make-up or jewelry. They are also against watching TV or listening to worldly music.

The Baptists believe that a faith has been saved forever once someone received Jesus Christ as the Savior. On the other hand, Pentecostals believe that one can lose salvation if the faith is not kept. Pentecostals believe that a person is not saved until he has believed, immersed, and received the “gift of the Holy Spirit”. On the contrary, Baptists believe that a person is saved once he or she repents and prays. For Baptists, once saved is always saved regardless of how he lives afterwards. But for Pentecostals, it is not like that and a person should have to lead a sinless life even after one is saved. Unlike Baptists, Pentecostals allow woman to become pastors.

    • LOL, this article is wrong on many points main one Pentecostals don’t allow women to be preachers that is what the Baptist people do. Dressing modestly is wearing a long skirt and a shirt down to your wrists. The Bible says that a women is not to dress like a man but yet Baptist people let women wear pants and even wear them to church. EpicFail

      • When the Bible says that a woman is not to dress like a man it is not talking about pants. The scripture that many Pentecostals quote concerning this was written some 2000 years before Christ where pants were not invented until the fourteenth or fifteenth century. Before then everyone wore a dress like robe or garment including Jesus himself. That scripture refers to cross-dressers not women wearing pants.

I am looking for a local church to go to with my little boy he is 8 until November. I have been listening and watching Dr. Charles Stanley from In Touch Ministries, and I absolutely love it, when I looked up his religion I got confused, although word he preaches is the same I’m used to hear, I just need to take to myself and my son to church, and now I don’t know what church to go to.           • We’ll I would like to answer your question regarding your Pentecostal beliefs, we also listen to Charles Stanley where my daughters now have a strong Christian walk due to his teachings. We were taught in pentalcostal teachings all through our lives but have come to a place where we have moved our location and have not found a home church in two years until we attended a festival for our granddaughter an were so blessed we started to attend this first baptist church an the teachings were so inspirational to me an my family we have made this our home church, to my amazement everyone in my family are blessed with the teachings which stay in my spirit throughout the week an I see changes within us, that is the most important thing to see in us as Christians, yet you will never stop being that pentalcostal Christian within your spirit which is your spiritual relationship.

        • Wow……. I grew up Cathloic. What I can’t wrap my head around is the laws the churches (Yes all of them). I will always be a Christian , but this is why I am no longer associated with any relegion. Some of the rules/laws don’t seem to have much to do with God. Just my lowly opinion.         • You are right, I went to an apostolic holiness church and they are Pentecostal, where women couldn’t wear pants nor jewlery and don’t own a tv and guys were all dressed up and dont own a tv and they didnt allow women to preach but I go to another pentecostal church who has two pastors (a man and a woman) and they are married and are co pastors and we come as we are, like the Scripture also says to come as you are. Women can wear pants, it’s just men needs to learn self control and look the other way if he is about to cause his eye to sin. So if all women wear skirts and dresses then how can men learn self control and integrity? Thats how i see it.

I’m pentecostal, have a wife who dresses like a lady and not a hooker, but she wears contemporary clothing including pants, dresses, shorts, jewelry, etc… Really, whatever she feels like wearing. Pentecostals do NOT believe you “should have to lead a sinless life even after one is saved.” You don’t lose your salvation like you could lose a set of car keys, but the Bible clearly teaches that you can forfeit your salvation by walking away from grace. Breaking covenant is as serious today as it has always been. God is still a God of covenant. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
            Pentecostals do NOT believe that you must receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit in order to be saved. I do not know why one would not want to receive the Holy Spirit baptism, but it is not “required” for salvation.
            We go to movies, watch television, etc… But we do guard what we allow into our spirit as the Bible clearly teaches to do that.
            Be careful when misrepresenting a brother or sister in Christ. I seem to remember the Bible saying something about not bearing false witness against your neighbor.

          The non-traditional Pentecostal churches that I have been to have women preachers and women also wear pants, shorts, and jewelry.
          I have never seen this in a traditional Pentecostal church.

Your comments are just to criticize baptist that is definitely not what the bible teaches. I’ve been to both churches and I believe baptist preach more from the bible.

      • Debra Ann, I grew up as a Pentecostal our churches did have woman’s as pastors, many did preach I for 1 did so…. yes our beloved pastor was strict on females wearing pants I however did wear foundation due to birthmark reasons, my beloved pastor never hold any against me, we the people can not judge only god can … as long one believe in god and keep his holy word is at point no one really knows the right religion but we all go to the father thru his son Jesus, we don’t pray to statue we pray to god in heaven… as for dressing let god guide you thru his spirit god bless and stay safe

I’m firm Baptist and females must dress modestly and not like a man and they most definitely are not preachers. The Pentecostal church I went to had women in pants and a female preacher along with a male preacher

      • Read Acts 2:37-38 and you will find the plan of salvation. Repent, be baptized in Jesus name, then it says ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

          • The scripture Act 2:38 doesn’t literally mean when you baptize someone with water to say ” I’ll baptize you in the name of Jesus for the remossion of sins” remission means forgiveness and when we baptize someone then we say like Jesus says Himself, “I’ll baptize you in the name of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit (the Trintiy)” we have to follow instructions what the main boss says. When you are at your job and a co worker says do this but your boss says to do that, who will you listen? So I’m saying we suppose to baptize ppl in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit like Jesus says and then our sins will be forgiven, that’s what Peter means being baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins, not literally say it when baptizing someone.       • I was raised in the AG church.
        They do not believe any different from Baptists on salvation by asking forgiveness for ones sins, repentance and living a Christian life in accordance with the teaching of Jesus Christ. My Grandfather was a Baptist minister on my Father’s side and he agreed that the Aof G teaching on Salvation was the same as Baptist doctrine. The difference is the belief in speaking in tongues as evidence of Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Baptists see that as an erroneous belief. One does not have to be Baptised in the Holy Spirit to be saved according to the A of G. It is a gift from God not a requirement for Salvation.

      • True.Trinitarian Pentecostals do NOT believe you have to have the baptism of the Holy Spirit to be saved.Scripture itself tells us this. Acts 19:1-6 explains this.This author is not educated in the Pentecostal doctrine of Trinitarian believers.

    • im a pentecostal, but i converted from baptist awhile before. I love both but truth is that every church has it’s own doctrine. Don’t hate on them too much. It is a blessing to hear that there are alot of people who believe in the manifestations instead of tearing them to shreds. People don’t seem to realize that God never changes and he wouldn’t just disband a gift that he had given. Im a revolutionary that believes that just as in the bible, can still happen now if we have faith in it. Some people just don’t have the FAITH in those type of things, if God can heal the sick and raise from the dead even today then why can’t we speak in other tongues. I believe that if God uses them to speak to people and the blessings are real in the words then why can’t people believe it? People shouldn’t just totally knock it out of the air when they don’t even fully know.

      • Im an independant baptist. Try to be fundamental. Its not that we sont beleive in the holy spirit but rather our interpretation of what exactly happened on the day of pentacost is different from the pentacostal movement. You beleive speaking in tongues is evidence of the holy spirit but i beleive its a learned skill. To me as a baptist, the evidence of the holy spirit is to be like Christ. Having the fruits of the spirit.the pentacostals seek a rush out of serving God.

    • Baptists DO believe Once Saved, Always Saved (“OSAS”). Keep in mind that Romans 3:10 says NO ONE is “good.” That includes Christians. NO human can worship his or her way to perfection, even one who is Saved.

  3. I grew up in an assemblies of God church and still consider myself to be Pentecostal. We definitely believe in speaking in tongues, but the clothing for women thing is outdated. Since I started in church (around 1980 – I am 36), women have always been fashionable. Various lengths of dresses, pants, and now even jeans in church. All the women I knew wore make up, had their hair styled beautifully, and were just breathtaking to me as a child, even the pastors’ wives. I am welcome at my church now even with my tattoos, facial piercings, and funky colored hair. 🙂

    • The Bible says to come as you are so sure they would accept you any way that you came. Once your saved and your a totally new person and you read your Bible and you know better then you would know women are not to wear pants. Different lengths of skirt ok but they shouldn’t be above the knee showing off your legs. I’m just saying

What is worse, normal, non-provocative jeans, or a short, tight, revealing dress? Pants themselves are not evil things!         • a long time ago women didn’t wear pants. You might think well they do now. You may also think well they created individual pants for women and for men.
          as i was saying a long time ago women wore pants. later women became rebels ( gay,tomboys) . when your gay or a tomboy you want to wear what men wear. so after a women wore pants it became well knowed. women started wearing them . so you see. that’s why we don’t wear pant because their technically meant for men.

          • I am a 100% Pentecostal/Christian and first of all woman wearing pants and all that other doctrine stuff is between the pastor and his church members. If you are a member then you are expected to follow the rules (after a while being there) Doctrine is something that is NEVER to be preach, but only to be taught to “members” of the church itself. My opinion: A woman wearing pants shows her shape, details…We all know according to the word ALL mankind’s desires is of the “flesh” “lust” (born into sin) therefore when a woman walks the street showing her shape and men look at her, then she is also responsible simply because she “being a Christian” has provided something for a man to desire which he should not! Understand that the “men” looking at her, desiring her ARE NOT saved so they do not know better, BUT…She “being saved” should know that the devil will use her as an instrument to cause others to sin! If the Bible says “resist the devil & he shall flee, then why don’t we also live by “Don’t allow the devil to use you as an instrument to cause others to sin…One reason why the Muslim community has the lowest rape rate in the World ‘A man cannot desire something he cannot see. This is why you see women wearing black or white sheets from head to toe, with only their eyeballs popping out, the men of their culture can’t handle themselves so they make rules for the woman so they don’t be tempted.           • Great point! We should be careful not to temp men( or women) with our clothing or attitudes. Also, weather women are supposed to preach or not is really not a good reason to argue I’m sure God has seen that in these times women are the head of the spiritual leading in a lot of families. And as for wearing pants well men were punished by having to work for the things they need to live and women pain of child bearing and yes being a companion to man. Men will pick about them not being equal in church or in status yet they want them to work out of the home to help the family when that wasn’t the plan as God put it in the garden. We can’t have our fruit and eat it too. People have misconstrued a womens importance in God’s eyes in my findings.         if people really believe that the apparel does not matter in a church setting, there would most likely be G-strings, daisy dukes and all other sorts of things in such a political correct world!

        Question to ponder, if everyone around you speaks the same language, what good is it to speak in another that nobody understands? How is God glorified or is it just the person that gets the praise and congratulations for being now better than those dirty Baptist like myself that has only spoken English all my life and foolishly believe that my faith in the only begotten Son of God has saved me and not by any part of my own!

        Think about it and try not to beat yourself up if “when” you sin (yes you will sin!!), even Paul did and none of us are anywhere near his level! Ask God to forgive you and strengthen you, then move on and try to do better and it that fails, refer to the first solution:)

  4. I wanted to add that yes, we are a noisy church. When I have visited other denominations, it doesn’t feel like church, no hands raised, clapping, dancing, yelling out hallelujah, no speaking on tongues on one side with an interpretation shouted out from the other side. Without that, it doesn’t feel right to me.

  5. Depending on your TYPE of Baptist or Penticostal, there can be a huge difference. IFB are severely strict. For women & girls, no pants, no make-up, no short hair or dying your hair, no exposing your shoulders, long dresses only, no jewelry (get the picture?). An old-fashioned Pentecost is like that also. And you sing only slow hymnals & no dancing or up-beat music, even Christian music. Modern Pentecost & “Happy-Baptist” are nothing like this. In fact, they’re very opposite. I have been to 4 Baptist, 2 Penticostal, & 1 Christian, & was snubbed by all of the Baptist ones. I had no idea why, & still don’t. I would also like to know this as well, because I was raised & taught that Baptist is the most laid-back, easy-going out of all the Christian religions. The one that I went to in the 80’s snubbed me because I wasn’t a town’s-girl & were very clannish. But the other 3 had no excuse for it, so if you have any answers, share them. Right now, I’m a member of a Christian church & they welcome everyone, praise, & enjoy up-beat gospel also. Baptist seem totally different now that when I was growing up.

    • I read your posts and thought you might allow another perspective, a food for thought.
      I see GOD as having a reason for dismissing the ‘rich young ruler’ without awarding him salvation. In almost any American congregation, we can find someone like him sitting there religiously. We can also be sitting right next to an Ananias or Sapphire, (the two that GOD killed right in the Christian church). These three folks were very self – ish-centered-oriented, (I think ‘in the flesh’ means that same thing ). We can also find these humans at the bar, the game or the party, because the thinking pattern is common. ‘its all about me’ about what I want. GOD started HIS rules with ‘its all about HIM’. “I am the LORD your GOD. ” is the very first rule HE delivered to Moses in the orders. the commands, the rules. A church that has mostly these three types involved in it seems to need HIM more than another one might.
      If its about HIM, instead of about us, we might consider how HE feels, and in considering, we might notice JESUS giving away HIS life to us, in trade for our own. To ‘have a life’ as they say, would imply not trading it in for HIS. To keep it would lose it, (HE said those words to us) not me. I think that as HIS hands and feet, we might need to place other’s need for HIM above our life, because that would be CHRIST-like. (that means Christian-Christ like does). today that is rare, really acting Christ like. So those talkers out there, need to see the why of their fail. That is basically our job, to show them actual CHRIST-like ness, so they can see the real difference between flesh, and self-lessness. because that is real sin, that self attitude we lived in prior to meeting HIM, when it goes out the window, we have HIM in our motivation instead of us in there. That is how we are sinless- because like the dirt under Moses feet was holy dirt on account of GOD being there, it is GOD being there that makes a thing holy. or right.     • Methodist are more laid back then Baptist.
      I have heard it said “The only difference between a Baptist and a Methodist is the Methodist with speak to you at the liquor store.”
      I like both, but I’m not so sure about Penacostal and the combined
      Version or so called Baptcostal or what ever. I think my Old Baptist church is leaning Pentecostal and is no longer the Baptist church I knew growing up. As leader of this family I will seek a Methodist or True Southern Baptist for our church home.

  6. I am and always will be Primitive Baptist..you may call it hard nosed hard core what ever you like..we just take the Bible. No we don’t play music in church we sing hymnals and we praise God…as far as being quiet when we pray and worship it is how ever God leads you if we want to shout or be happy as some people say there is nothing wrong with that ..that is just proof the the lord is blessing you. No the particular church that I attend does not believe in women preachers..we also don’t speak in tongues and i do believe because the bible says if you speak in tongues without am inturpriter then that is a no. We dress modestly in what ever type of clothing we want as long as we are covered…and to say that you can get saved without the Holy Ghost..well thats just ludicras..and offcourse no one is perfect you will sin after being saved but you will know it and you will repent..God will repramand his children…And anyone who wants to attend our baptist church is more than welcome and you will be acceppted without judgement. Now as far as this comparing religion I feel its stupid as long as we all have a common goal and live by the word and Believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God and he died for our sins and was resurected..and you have been saved and recievd the holy Ghost then its all good…You must believe for yourself it is your relationship with the Lord that will get you to heaven not someone elses.

  7. This author is completely wrong. I have worshiped in both baptist and pentacostal churches. First of all pentacostals and baptists do have the same belief of trinity and being saved by faith of Jesus crucified, repentance and prayer. Pentacostals dont believe baptism in the holy spirit is required for salvation but is a gift from God that will help draw you closer to him and help with your service in the Lord. Pentacostals dont put more emphasis on the holy spirit, they believe the holy spirit is how God moves people on this earth. The emphasis is on the cross and Jesus crucified as is the baptist. Both allow women preachers in certain circumstances and how a woman dresses has changed with the times. Pentacostals do not believe someone has to remain sinless after they are saved. This is impossible as we are all sinners and will continue to sin. Repentance is what keeps your salvation. Once saved always saved is ridiculous. If you turn away from Jesus and denounce your faith how are you saved?

    • Very well said. I was raised in a Baptisit. For the past couple of years I have been going to a COGIC and recently became a member of one last month. I can honestly say I dont notice a BIG difference in the two, other than the church I’m at now calls to the Altar every Sunday. The worship service is about the same. We read from the same bible, sing the same sonsgs, pay tithes and offerings. I can say I feel more at home at this church but I dont think that has anything to do with it being Baptist or COGIC. I love the Lord and I love all that goes with it. I was taught love, Jesus, God at both and thats what matters to me. God Bless.

      • Oh sorry I do notice one difference. The church I attend now (COGIC) believes in the power of healing. Not saying Baptists dont, Im just saying if you come to church sick the pastor will lay hands and pray for your healing. This is done at the Altar every Sunday. Everything is done through the power of prayer. I know the Baptists believe this too I just see it more at COGIC.

    • The belief in the Trinity depends on the type of Pentecostal. I am Apostolic Pentecostal and we believe in the Oneness or Godhead rather than the
      Trinity.

    • I would like to repeat the Baptist position of Once Saved, Always Saved (OSAS). The Baptist Church would say that if you “turn away from Jesus and renounce (my correction) your faith,” you were probably never Saved in the first place. Romans 3:10 says NO ONE is good (emphasis mine). That includes Christians, as we are still trapped in these sinful, evil bodies. Bear in mind, too, that sometimes Christians backslide; that doesn’t mean they aren’t Saved. However, at the same time, OSAS certainly doesn’t give a Christian a license to sin without remorse.

    I have struggled with the church all my life. I come from a very dysfunctional family with abuse in abundence and God/Jesus and my bible that was given to me (the little tiny one they used to give out) was my salvation, even though I understood none of it except the comfort I felt. And I would go to church thinking I would find peace but instead I seemed to find politics, and understand that now as an adult but did not as a child seeking the need to find the peace of my God/Jesus in His santuary. I have always gone to Baptist church and have gotten the snubs and lots of other things I would just rather not discuss. I had an eye opening seeking my home church when I entered the Pentacostal church not even realizing it was a Pentacostal church recently. I have never fealt more at home and at peace then I do in this church with these people who do not match the discription above. These Pentacostal that I know so far love Jesus and come together to praise together and be joyful. All that matters to me is that I can go to my Gods sanctuary with His people and sing His praise, pray and do as much in His word as I can and feel this peace and I didn’t find it with the Baptist but with whom I least expected it, Pentacostal.

    1. never seen a women pastor
    2. I it doesn’t necessarily have to be a specific length
    3. most don’t believe in the trinity (UPC an Apostolic)
    4. we also believe all spiritual gifts are still active
    5. Nobody is sinless therefore impossible to “lead a sinless life” you have to do your best and have a good heart but perfection is impossible as everybody sins.

    • in our church there are women pastors the wives of our male pastors it does’nt matter if ur a man or a woman pastor, what matters is you serve God.

      next is we believed that once you live in a sinfull live u will always be sinfull unless u have repented to the Lord and never again live your life what u had before.

      if you repent and accepted god, obeyed and lived by his will until he returns to earth you are saved. but if u have repented but still continues to live in a wordly life then is up to him (God) to judge you.

      were in the ending times guys, so why not just continue to serve God, accept him as your personal savior and father. confess and tell that you are a sinner and you are willing to give ang surrender your life for him. he is the alpha and omega after all.

      Let us not quarrel or see the diffrences about other religions, what matters most is we are obeying,recieving,praying,loving,thanking and living in the will of God. it is for our safety.

      • The bible does state “I and my father are one”. And this is true, However the bible does teach the trinity. In order to understand this you simply must read the word. The trinity is like a piece of pie. While you can cut 3 separate pieces, each piece is still part of the same pie. Read mathew 28:19, 2 corinthians 13:14, colossians 1:15, philippians 2:5-8. These will help you get started but there are several other verses as well. There were several occasions where Jesus talk to God referring to Him as His father. On the cross Jesus asked why God had forsaken Him after God turned His head away. When Jesus was baptized, a voice from heaven said this is my beloved son in whom i am well pleased. Folks, Jesus is not a crazy man who talks to Himself. When He said he was going to go prepare a place for us and send the holy spirit to comfort us while He is gone…He didnt mean He himself was going to be in heaven and on earth, if that were so He wouldn’t have said he was coming back. Very much evidence to prove the oneness movement wrong. And if nothing else….the man who created the oneness movement later said he was wrong.

  10. Actually, I know of 2 versions of Baptists who believe Christians can lose their salvation – Freewill Baptists and the Baptist Union of Denmark. The debate has been going on for centuries – it’s called the Calvinistic/Arminian debate.

    I’m not Baptist nor Pentecostal, but rather evangelical with a touch of Charismatic. According to Matthew 7:21-23 and 1 John 2:19, I believe those who appear to have lost their salvation were never born again in the first place. I believe they were just religious and later stopped being religious. There is a major difference between religion and salvation.

      • Then you are a Oneness believer too.. The Trinity says the three are co-equal, co-eternal, and co-existing. Oneness says God existed (Father), then was manifest in the flesh (Son), then was resurrected and imparted His spirit to us (Holy Ghost). The three did not all exist from the beginning like the Trinity says.

          • Or maybe your viewpoint is altered to believe that there were 3 people instead of God talking with himself. This is something we do when we are thinking out loud. “Hmm, let’s see (let us see)” Also, the most used scripture of Oneness is Deuteronomy 6:4. Other scriptures in the New Testament state from Jesus “I and my Father are one,” “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father.” and much more.

          • Besides that, those are titles of God that you state in the trinity. Just like I am a son, cousin, friend, etc. but my name is not son or cousin or any of that. In Acts 2:38 it says to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins not the titles of Father, Son, Holy Ghost. The next few scriptures talk about that it is for everyone after that day as well.   14. I was raised in the Baptist faith all my life. My husband has grew up in the what they call Pentecost holistic. His mother claims to be a preacher. I was raised and still believe that a woman can not be preacher. Since my marriage I’ve been told by his preacher mother that my faith and how I believe is not right. I have tried to be understanding but why should I? He only wants to go to churches his mother approves of. My thoughts on this is: why should I be a part of there faith that puts down all other faiths and believes? What kind of so called preacher puts your personal faith and believes in god down? Always, and I mean always look at what the scriptures say. There are three basic ideologies within protetantism. Calvanism, Lutheranism and Armenianism. There are simularities between all three. The diferences basically are” the once saved always saved”, and “pre-destinationism”. I happen to be of the Armenian camp. Which rebukes those two thoughts. GOD does not pre-determine ones fate. As well, one can fall from Grace. The only rebuttal Calvanist have is “you were never saved to begin with”. Sorry folks, but you cannot know the condition of ones salvation or their heart.     • Most of the churches today are the Loadicean Denominational churches – See book of revelation. Pulpit has become a point of selling Jesus at a price. The more you give the more recognized you are. They do not follow biblical rules in appointing pastors, deacons etc as outlined in book of Timothy. TV evangilists ask you to send prayer request. I should say all denominations are similar in only monetary wise. Please do not take me wrong. There are still many churches who live on biblical principles of what I will say old fashioned christians which I am as my God is old fashioned as once he speaks out a word, it never changes.

We will never be perfect, but thanks to God’s Grace we are seen as righteous as He looks at us through Christ, His Son. I’m so sorry you had such a bad experience – there are false preachers/teachers/churches everywhere – but please do not paint all Pentecostals with the same brush.     • Actually, that is not true at all. 90% of Pentecostals do not believe in one thing you said. I am Assembly of God and we are 110% Pentecostal. You are saved by your faith and belief in Christ ALONE.
      Speaking in tongues is only to edify the believer and the church. It is not required for salvation. Baptism isn’t a requirement either, but you do need to obey Jesus and be baptized. Not being baptized is only sinful if it is out of rebellion. Also, we do not believe “Once saved, always saved.” We believe that you’re saved as long as you stay that way.

      Only Oneness Pentecostals believe in a 3 step salvation.

    • No person will EVER be capable of judging another and of the multiple apostolic Pentecostal preachers I have heard preach the word only a month shy of 40 years, not ONE has ever mentioned ANY person being condemned to before. I was born to one Catholic and o be Pentescostal parent. Every Sunday morning attended Catholic church followed by Sunday School in the Pentecostal church and attended Catholic school Kindergarten through 8th Grade. It was the religion teacher from the Catholic school that told me at 16 years old I had to make a choice though that choice was not mine living at home with my parents. What was the point that I completely cut all the Catholic church and when I married into a Baptist family but nowhere else have I felt what I always have inside a Pentecostal Church. My 15 year old son; perfect student, sought after athlete, lived by girls, friends in multiple directions has grown up being brought to both the Pentecostal and Baptist Church by his grandparents even when I would back out because of being confused all of my life and lazy mainly as an adult went to the Pentecostal youth conference in Indianapolis having only come back last Saturday night where he received the gift of speaking and another tongues within the first hour of the conference and again the second night and this kid all of a sudden said he cared nothing about all of the things he had been doing all he wanted to do was good in school play ball and is it Church 30 minutes before the doors open both services on Sunday and Wednesday night’s. Anyone that wants to speak to him about the Pentecostal religion can do so when they are unsure themselves but when you see kids ( even seven and eight year olds) filled with the spirit, speaking in another tongue they’ve never heard much less learned or became fluent in, you know it is nothing but God filling their bodiesand I myself could not be more thankful. Having attended multiple denominations and many churches of each, I do not think highly of anyone that puts down on any other religion but when experiencing multiple for yourself it’s easy to know where the truth lies.

  26. I am a baptist because that is how I was raised. But my friend is Pentecostal and she has had a huge impact on my walk with the Lord in a good way. We often talk about God and the differences and similarities between our denominations. I do want to be Pentecostal but I’m afraid my parents will freak out.         I can definitely agree that this article is wrong on nearly all of the points. First off, a Baptist church can be just as loud as a Pentecostal church. Secondly, we do allow women to become pastors, ministers, deacons, reverends etc. Third of all, I can’t say that all Baptists don’t exactly believe in using tongues. I’m a Baptist and I’ve heard many regular church goers speak in tongues. Although this fact is more common in a Pentecostal church it does and can happen. Moral is that most of this article is incorrect about both denominations and more research needs to be done. It really all depends on the church you go to or visit. Some beliefs have more emphasis in certain Baptist and Pentecostal churches. Also keep in mind there are different types of Baptist and Pentecostal denominations as well.

The majority of Pentecostals believe that speaking in tongues is in no way a requirement to be saved, or that it makes you a better person if you do. That at least, is how I was taught in seminary through my Pentecostal church. Many people think that Pentecostal people are crazy, and while it is true the denomination attracts certain people who may be, the majority of Pentecostals are good people who are actually very grounded. Also, our denomination DOES NOT believe it is wrong to dress modern within reason. Our ladies wear whatever clothes they want, cut and dye their hair, wear makeup and jewlery, etc.
    Finally, only a select group of Pentecostals believe “Jesus only” . Our church believes in God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Three distinct forms of God, but all very much God. We call it The Holy Trinity. This article, while covering very well the apostolic branch of the Pentacostal movement, lacks any knowledge of the many other branches of the movement.

  40. This is somewhat true, not entirely. I have been to both a Baptist and Pentecostal church.

    1) My Baptist church wouldn’t allow children of a certain age to get baptized as they see it as a serious matter that needs to be decided by a more mature mind. My Pentecostal church will allow children to get baptized as long as they want to and their parents allow it regardless of their mindset. Overall though both churches won’t allow kids younger than 10 or 9 years of age to get baptized.

    2) Both Baptist & Pentecostal church will sing either loudly or softly depending on how we feel God’s presence.

    3) Both Baptist and Pentecostal see speaking in tongues as a gift from God and shows how strong you are in spirit to be able to speak it. Same goes for revelations or prophecies.

    4 & 5) Both Baptist and Pentecostal believe that once you accept Christ as your savior your name is written in the book of life and you are saved therefore there is no need to be saved again. However, once you are saved you need to live a sinless life because sin will eventually lead you to a life in darkness and fire. (Hell)

    6) My Baptist church won’t allow women to become Pastors, in the Bible it would basically explain of how priests would read God’s word and would teach those who would want to learn more of God. From what I can remember it doesn’t mention woman priests teaching or spreading Gods word. However, that doesn’t mean woman can’t teach or give testimony of how God has worked in their life it just means God has given the authority to pastor people through men. We can see that clearly in the book of Genesis when God took a rib out of Adams body and created Eve to be a companion to Adam. Now for my Pentecostal church we don’t really have women as pastors preach to us, they’ll have women go up and stand at the podium and give a message but they’re all sisters in Christ that we know that will share a message. We’ve never actually had a woman pastor preach at our church.

    What I know for sure and without a doubt is that both churches will study, preach and rely on our bibles. Both churches read and follow God’s word through the Holy Bible (King James Version). In any case will both churches have someone preach off a book that is not the bible, both believe in the same Holy Trinity that is the Father (Jehova), the Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit.

    At least in my experience it’s been pretty much alike with just little details that change but my beliefs as for both churches are the same. Accept Christ as you savior and not only say it but to believe it. Once you have been saved you need to be re-born again through Baptism. Once re-born you need to live a sinless life and focus on God through prayer, fasting and bible reading. Once you live a spiritual life meaning you’re in communication with God you need to start doing his works as his disciples did, at this point God starts to speak to you through prayer or it could be through a different method. Everything we need to know or what we need to do is explained in the Bible.

    – I believe this is wrong because If we believe this then why do we have church discipline we have to hold each other accountable for our actions Matthew 18:15-17 “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
    If we are “saved” but we just sin like the world and live our life In a way that doesn’t glorify God maybe you weren’t saved in the beginning because we are called to pick up our cross everyday.

    It really depends on the church because they are not all the same. Some are very relaxed and other strict, no make up, no revealing clothing. Some are in the middle. Not all requirements are the same, it depends on the church. Our church was the complete opposite of strict. You were welcome there with whatever you could afford to wear. We did not discriminate because of your clothes. Make was worn and some women went over board with their makeup.
    I personally don’t care for strict churches.
    I had been to a Baptist church only difference was they don’t believe in speaking in tongues. Other than that it was like our church.

  48. Southern Baptist here and we do NOT believe once saved always saved, backsliding can cause you to become lost again where you’ll need to repent and ask to receive Jesus again and live right! We do NOT believe in women preachers. I will agree we still stick to the hymns in the Southern Gospil way, but still the old time hymns, and we are more quiet with praise and worship and prayers. As well as we do believe tongues are a dead language and should one become overcome they are to be interpreted. So, your article should have more research as there are branches to each denomination. It isn’t as dry cut as Baptist and Pentecostal. You have to take in account for the branches to each.

    I can definitely agree that this article is wrong on nearly all of the points. First off, a Baptist church can be just as loud as a Pentecostal church. Secondly, we do allow women to become pastors, ministers, deacons, reverends etc. Third of all, I can’t say that all Baptists don’t exactly believe in using tongues. I’m a Baptist and I’ve heard many regular church goers speak in tongues. Although this fact is more common in a Pentecostal church it does and can happen. Moral is that most of this article is incorrect about both denominations and more research needs to be done. It really all depends on the church you go to or visit. Some beliefs have more emphasis in certain Baptist and Pentecostal churches. Also keep in mind there are different types of Baptist and Pentecostal denominations as well.

  50. I asked my pastor, a Baptist, if it was OK if I wore a skirt to church, as I have a skin condition that the seams on pants irritate the skin on my legs and make them raw and bleed. He told me that a wearing a skirt is ok as they were originally designed for men, so skirts are actually men’s wear. He said he would sooner see me wearing one than not coming at all.

  51. It is not true that baptist believe that living a sinful life after salvation is not significant. It is just salvation is by Jesus Christ sacrifices and not ours to boast (Eph 2:8-9). Living a righteous life is an expected fruit after believing Christ. If your belief is true, then you can never lose eternal life, that is if you really believe.

    The issue are for people who profess belief in Christ but not sincere to live for Him. Then, the faith and salvation is not genuine or true. Like Judas, he did not lost his salvation, rather he doesn’t believe eversince. (One of you is the devil, that is how Jesus described him.

    This is a question, do you really believed? Then you are saved and you are expected to walk with Christ. If you do not walk then, maybe you do not really believe within your heart. If we sin (meaning not living in sin), we have an advocate with the Father and we are asked to confess.

    Salvation by grace, means it is of Christ and we ought to give glory to God and his Son. I know you understand if your believe and Christ is in your heart. We ought to live righteously to give thanks and give honor to Him and his works.

  53. I like being baptist no one can change that about me. It’s one of the religion that do not complicate the word of God that’s written in the Bible like many other religions do applying false doctrine there own way and expect for people to apply them in their lives. Baptist is one religion that know that Jesus does exist as long as you believe and receive him as your personal savior and not bowing to any human being or take any human being as Jesus. The pentecostal leaders and other religions act like they are Jesus in heaven when they are far from that. I like how baptist allow people to live as a free spirit life without being interfering by other people demonic spirit. Not judging but my experiences with those religions that based on the holy spirit they mostly get into people personal life and profesize lies to collect money from people and get rich very quick. 95% of them are mostly people being directed by psychic demonds operating miracles, healing people etc you those people are also arrogant, demanding, controling, bossy, forcy, malnupilator, very pushy and they create lots of drama. They act as self important when in reality they are not they simply needs to jack-off. My spirit is very sensitive and can detect those type of people who say they have the holy spirit when the true reality is holy spirat. I grew up in a baptist church were the pastor was very humble and always willing and ready to listen to his church members. He will not do anything like having a meeting with a couple without his wife being next to him. His church was very simple and fun when you go to church you go to listen to the word of God and receive and not to flatter him. His church was free from drama, they did not require you to become the pastor slave like you have to live for the pastor rather then living your live for you. My mother used to cast out demonds from people naturally without applying some type of funky doctrine like pentecostal used some type of evil language like they are calling the head of their jesabels to back them up when they speak that funky language (which they claim they are praying in tongues). My mother started going to this pentecostal church and she lost the gift because she’s simply surrounded by demonds in the church she goes to. She complained a lot of how bad she lost the gift of casting out demonds. People can pretend very well when it comes to the Bible and that holy spirit. These folks who claim they have the holy spirit they love to compare/compete with one another which I really hate. Because of the bad experience with these individual, I chose not to value them because it is the messenger of God there should not no comparison and people who claims they have it should practice the same concept. I don’t support woman being a pastor, in my opinion to lead you must be a good example. A woman can do things like the worship, announcements etc but never to preach or guiding people I apply that same concept for single man/ woman who are not married and for pastor who are divorced. I choose to live my life as I please and not allowing those arrogants to control my life their ways nor will ever be going to be a member at a church who inforced the holy spirit which must of the time full of dramas. I don’t support woman being a pastor so my baptist pastor did not support that either. In my opinion to be a good leader you must be a good example my pastor always say, I will not allow some who is divorced or single give me guidance my It has been a bad experience. Folks just read your Bible and don’t be fulled by those gold deager.
