Difference Between Buddhism and Sikhism

Buddhism vs  Sikhism

Buddhism and Sikhism are religions that are widely followed the world over. Though these two religions have their origins in the Indian subcontinent, they are different in many respects such as belief, deity, means of salvation and scriptures.

When the two religions are compared, Sikhism is the youngest religion in the world. Buddhism dates back to 530 BC whereas Sikhism dates back to the 15th century.

A Dharmic religion, Buddhism centres round the life and teachings of Gautama Buddha, who is believed to be Enlightened One. Sikhism centers round the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev and ten successive Gurus.

When comparing the concept of deities between the two religions, Buddhism believes in deities that are enlightened whereas Sikhism believes in a single God and the teachings of the Gurus.

According to Buddhism, a man gets salvation by practicing vipassana and samadhi meditations. Samadhi prepares the mind for vipassana, which allows the follower to see life’s four noble truths. As per Sikhism, a person gets salvation if he worships God, performs good deeds and also do community service. A person should also fight the five evils ‘“ Anger, Ego, Greed, Attachment and Lust.

When looking at the scriptures, Buddhism is based on Tipitaka and Sutras. On the other hand, Sikhism is based on the Guru Grant Sahib.

When the place of worship of the followers of Buddhism is called Temple or Pagoda, the places of worship of the followers of Sikhism are Gurudwaras.

When talking of the presence of the two religious believers, it can be seen that Buddhism is popular in Sri Lanka, East Asia and South East Asia. Sikhism is predominantly seen in Punjab in India.

  1. Wrong…… well not all. Sikh believes in meditation! and Sadhana just like buddhism (no difference there) – its just Sikhs believe you must meditate at 4am and the truth is realised – but meditate on gods name. One who mediates and becomes one with the one supreme, become god themselves… hence the enlightened beings in buddhism. The concept is the same… theres not much difference really between the 2 religions. Oh Sikhs keep their hair , but buddhist monks shave their head. – all in all both Sikhs and buddhist have mutual respect for each other due to their recognition of their sadhana …..

    • Just a correction…to realize God, there is no set time for meditation. Sikhism relies on 3 basic principles; namely, hard work, meditation for inner peace (to fight your inner weaknesses), and sharing with the needy.

    • Buddhism does not believe in the
Creation or the One God concept.

Buddhist concentrated on overcoming of the human suffering than to have belief in God.

Guru Nanak ji rejected the vedas devi devta deity system for a belief of the Ek Oankar Concept
      or
the One Universal God for all humans.
Guru Nanak ji emphasized on the Truth and
      the Truthful living.

  2. Big difference is bodhisattva prefer meditation in silent but in sikhism u can meditate any time even on work or involved in some another activities

  3. It is good with me as a Catholic if a person and religion believes in God as the Creator, the person does good works, seeks to pack goodness into the stream of life, and tries to overcome their character defects, overcome error with truth-destroy evil with divine light-I can say we are on the same path trudging the road of happy destiny.

  4. Guru Nanak ji spread the True humanity, equality, one supreme god existance message and denied the castiesm

  5. Sikhism teaches of the ONENESS OF ALL LIVING BEINGS. Buddhism stress COMPASSION TO ALL LIVING BEINGS. There is some similarity here.
