Differences between the President’s Cup team and The Ryder Cup team in golf

For those of you interested in golf, you must have realized at once what we are talking about. For the rest, you will too by the time you are done going through this article! The sport in consideration here is the most expensive sport of the world, namely Golf. And the two teams we talk about, the President’s Cup team and the Ryder Cup team are actually the teams that represent their entire regions, or continents for that matter at two of the grandest stages of all; the President’s cup and the Ryder Cup.

But first, let us establish the difference between the two tournaments. The Presidents Cup is a tournament that consists of a series of matches of men’s golf between a team representing the United States and another team that represents the entire world except for Europe. This means that the team players in the latter can be from across the globe provided that they are not in the US team and do not belong to the European Union. This cup is being organized biennially since 1994. Initially, it was held every 2 years with the years being even number years. Now, however, it is held in odd number years. The Ryder Cup is also a biennially held competition between two teams; one from the United States, the same that competes in the Presidents Cup, and a team from Europe. This tournament is named after Samuel Ryder, an English businessman who donated the Ryder trophy. The Ryder cup was previously held in odd number years but is now held in even number years with the Presidents cup in the odd years. This is how the two go on; for example, in 2014, there will be the Ryders cup and then in 2015, the Presidents cup and so on.

The two tournaments are usually talked about together and there combined idea is actually a unique one. What they do is that they divide the globe into three regions; the United States, Europe and the rest of the world. The tournaments go on as a triangular one (with the exception of Europe against the rest of the world team) in order to establish the strongest of the three in terms of golfing class. It is actually a battle for the United States to get bragging rights against its old sporting rival, Europe, and then the rest of the world!

The way in which the qualification takes place for the two teams has a slight variation. For the Presidents cup US team, two captains are made under whom are 8 other players who have earned the highest FedEx Cup points in the last two years. The International team that competes against the United States team is comprised of the top 10 international players from official Golf Rankings of the World (excluding those who are from Europe). In contrast to this, in the Ryders Cup, the US team is determined by the US points system which leads to the top 9 being selected to represent the United States. As for team Europe, there is a captain (currently Paul McGinley), who chooses three member at his own discretion. Then there are 4 people who are the leading four Members on the European Points List of the Ryders cup. In addition to these, five leading members, not qualified under the previous criteria, who are on the Ryder Cup’s World points list, are also made part of the team.

Summary of differences expressed in points

1. Presidents Cup- between US and rest of the world (except for Europe); Ryder Cup- between Europe and the US

2. Currently, Ryder cup held in even number years, presidents cup held in odd number years

3. Presidents cup- bragging rights of golfing class between US and the world; Ryder cup, between Europe and the US
