Difference Between 8n and 9n Ford Tractor

The 8n and 9n Ford tractors are very hardy machines that are still popular choices despite being quite old. Although you may not think that it is so, the 9n is actually the older model built around 1939 while the 8n started production 8 years later in 1947. This is the main difference between the 8n and 9n Ford tractors; and as you’d expect, the 8n has a number of improvements that make it better than the 9n.

One such improvement comes in horsepower. The engines on the 8n tractors are generally a bit more powerful than those on 9n tractors. Aside from the engine, there are also several changes in the design of the 8n tractors. For starts, the 8n tractors have a four speed transmission while the order 9n tractors had a three speed transmission. This lets you control your speed and power a bit more.

One way you can easily tell between 8n and 9n Ford tractors is if it has foot pegs. The older 9n tractors had foot pegs while the 8n tractors had running boards where you can place your feet. Needless to say, running boards are a bit more comfortable than foot pegs. You can also tell between an 8n and 9n Ford tractors by the positioning of the brake pedal. The 9n has the two brake pedals on opposite sides, so you have a brake pedal close to your right foot and another close to your left foot. On the other hand, the 8n has both brake pedals on the right side. At first glance, the layout of the 9n seems to make more sense than that of the 8n. But when you consider that the clutch pedal is also on the left side, the layout of the 8n is much better; because operating the clutch as well as the left brake can become pretty difficult.

8n and 9n Ford tractors are very dependable machines and you can still find a lot of replacement parts despite being more than half a century old. But overall, the 8n is the better option when considering between the two.

Summary:

The 9n is actually older and cruder than the 8n tractor

  4. Can I sway the 3 speed transmission out May 9n ford to a 4 speed from a 8n ford, easy.
