Difference Between Blackberry and Blueberry

blackberryBlackberry vs Blueberry

Perhaps you have already heard of super fruits. Such fruits are, pound for pound, the most nutritious fruits in existence. Two of the most popular super fruits today are blackberries and blueberries.

The blackberry and the blueberry are tremendously nutritious as they are excellent sources of vitamins and iron. Yet, the most remarkable property of these fruits is their richness in antioxidant content. We all know what antioxidants are, but for those who have been living under a rock, antioxidants are molecules that battle the “free radicals” in our body that speeds up aging and deteriorates our immune system.

The health benefits of antioxidants are highly sought after and from years of research, berries are found to be greatly abundant of this health essential substance. Among all of them, blackberries and blueberries easily ranked above all berries when it comes to antioxidant content. Some fruits may also possess a huge amount of antioxidants but these berries are favored because of its nutrient bioavailability (easily absorbed by the body).

Blackberries are primarily abundant in the Pacific Coast and eastern North America. They are also found in the British Isles and Western Europe. The Blackberry plants grow like vines. When they grow, they go over other plants just to stay off the ground. Blackberry bushes are often thorny but some varieties are not. The great thing about blackberries is that anybody can grow their own as they are tolerant of site and soil conditions.

Blueberry plants, on the other hand, are freestanding and they grow best in acidic soil. These plants mainly grow on the hillsides of Northern Europe and Northern Britain. Blueberries are also native to Asia. Europeans call the plant as the bilberry bush which is often found growing wild in the woods. The blueberry fruit is spherical in shape with a medium to dark blue color when it is ripe.

Blackberries, as the name suggests, are dark purple and blackish in color when ripe. However, they start from red when the berries are still not mature. They are rather oblong in shape; they are aggregate fruits that are composed of many smaller fruits called drupes.

These berries are now made into food products such as, juice and preserves. They are great for snacks and everyday consumption. They are available in many markets nowadays and people will often buy them not only for their health benefits but for their flavors as well. For very nutritious fruits, blackberries and blueberries are truly delicious.

  1. I noticed that you said that blueberries are often called bilberries in Europe.
Just thought you might like to know that a bilberry is actually an entirely different berry to a blueberry, although they are often confused by those who have not tried both.

    Here’s an article about it if you’re interested… http://www.livestrong.com/article/511259-bilberry-vs-blueberry/
