Caffeinated vs Decaffeinated Coffee

People love coffee. It gives a boost to a sleepy lad on an early Monday morning. Coffee, besides its anti-sleeping mechanism, is also said to be a great source of anti-oxidants whether it’s caffeinated or decaffeinated.

To put things into a simple perspective, caffeinated coffee contains caffeine while decaffeinated coffee does not contain caffeine. Caffeine is a substance, particularly an alkaloid drug, which can be extracted from coffee beans and tea leaves. It is considered as a stimulant which has an effect on the central nervous system of the body which is the brain. Its effects include wakefulness and mental excitement making the drinker active and alert. It has also a diuretic effect which will make you urinate often.

Caffeinated coffee does not undergo a meticulous process in producing it unlike decaffeinated coffee. The latter undergoes a process called ‘decaffeination’ in which caffeine is removed. In this process, different solvents are used such as chloroform, dichloromethane, and benzene. But due to unwanted factors to be considered, such as safety, it was replaced by a safer method of extraction.

In this method, called filtration, coffee beans are immersed in water. Then the water which contains the caffeine together with other substances undergoes filtration via activated charcoal. Caffeine is then extracted from this method. The water filtrated will then be brought back to the coffee beans, and they will be dried for the flavor to penetrate back into the coffee beans. The caffeine which was left during infiltration can be sold to manufacturers of soda.

Coffee with caffeine has superior flavor and aroma compared to decaffeinated coffee. It is also said that you cannot eliminate the unwanted effects of coffee, such as palpitations and nervousness, even if it’s decaffeinated because coffee contains 400 other chemicals and substances. So to think of it, decaffeinated coffee seems not to be a healthy option.

    This is not correct.
    The industry standard for decaffeinated coffee in the United States requires that at least 95% of the original caffeine content has been removed from the beans.
    In addition, robusta beans contain twice as much caffeine by weight as arabica beans.
    Thus, a decaf coffee from robusta beans will have up to 10% of the caffeine content of a comparable arabica roast. A caffeine-sensitive individual would likely experience an adverse reaction to this caffeine content; while smaller than un-decaffeinated coffee, it is still appreciable. (The term “caffeinated” as used in the article is misleading, since it implies a willful addition of caffeine, as in caffeinated soft drinks)

    In short:
    “Decaf” coffee does actually contain caffeine, up to 5% of the caffeine content of “regular” coffee.
