Ginseng and ginkgo biloba are of great medicinal value and has been in use for centuries. Though the two herbs — Ginseng and ginkgo biloba ‘“ are similar in many aspects, they have many differences.

The first difference one can notice is with regard to the extracts. Ginseng and ginkgo biloba extracts are derived from different parts. While Ginseng extract comes from the roots, ginkgo biloba extract is made from the leaves and seeds.

Another difference is with regard to the active components present in both of them. Ginsenosides and panaxans are the foremost chemical components present in Ginseng. Ginkgo biloba contains flavonoids and terpenopids.

Ginseng and ginkgo biloba are widely used for mental stress and also enhancing memory. Though these two herbs help in improving mental health, they act differently. Ginkgo biloba helps in augmenting the flow of blood to the brain. On the other hand, Ginseng is known to activate the production of Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH).

When talking of Ginseng and ginkgo biloba side effects, they are quite different. While Ginseng doesn’t come with any serious side effects, the ginkgo biloba is known to cause certain side effects in the body. Ginseng is an adaptogen, which means it helps in restoring the health of the body without any side effects even if the dosage level exceeds the prescribed levels. On the contrary, ginkgo biloba comes with certain side effects like headache, vomiting and nausea, if it is used with certain anti-coagulant products. Ginkgo biloba will also not deliver any results if it is used for a prolonged time.

Ginkgo biloba belongs to the Ginkgophyta division, Ginkgoopsida class, Ginkgoales order, Ginkgoaceae family and Ginkgo genus. Ginseng is a slow growing perennial plant with fleshy roots, which belongs to the Panax genus, Araliaceae family.
