Difference Between Illustrator and Corel Draw

illustrator_softwareIllustrator vs Corel Draw

Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw are both vector-based illustration software used for graphics designing. These software’s are mainly created to deliver fast results, and meet the demands of design professionals and graphic artists for business, or even home use.

Adobe Illustrator was created by Adobe Systems, way back in 1986, as a Font Development Software and Postscript file format. Later in 1988, the second version, called Illustrator 88, was released and introduced with many new tools and features. The latest version, which is the CS4, was released last October in 2008, featuring a few brand new tools and improvements on the old tools.

The new features of CS4 are Multiple Art Boards, Transparency in Gradients, Blob Brush tool, ‘Gradients Exposed’, In-Panel Appearance Editing, and Separations Preview.

The Multiple Art boards contain up to 100 art boards, with varying sizes. The transparency of the Gradients feature helps you reveal underlying objects and images, and create rich color and texture mixes, using multiple layers, knockouts, and cover-up fades. The Blob Brush is a brush tool that can generate a single clean vector shape, even when strokes overlap.

‘Gradients Exposed’ means you can interact with gradients right on your object. Aswell, with the In-Panel Appearance Editing, you can edit object characteristics directly in the appearance panel, eliminating the need to open the fill, stroke, or effects panels. And finally, with Separations View, you can avoid color output surprises such as unexpected spot colors, unwanted overprinting, overprints that don’t overprint, white overprinting, and CMYK blacks in text and placed files.

Corel Draw was developed by the Corel Corporation in Ottawa, Canada, in 1987. The first version was initially released in 1989. It was the first Graphics Suite with combined vector graphics software, and the Photo Paint program, font manager, and other common features found in all of the versions. Its latest version, the X4 was released last January, in 2008.

The X4’s main feature is to help you create your designs faster. It contains new interactive tables, which you can create and import to quickly provide a structured layout for text and graphics. It also has new independent page layers, which you can control by creating individual page layouts within a multi-page document.

Another thing is, it has new font integration, where you can immediately identify fonts used in existing designs received from clients. X4 can now support raw camera file formats for hundreds of different types of cameras. Other new features include, live text formatting, mirroring of text horizontally, vertically or both, and ‘centerline trace’, which ebables you to trace line drawings or signatures, even better than before.

Summary:

1. Adobe Illustrator was created by Adobe Systems in 1986, while Corel Draw was created by Corel Corporation, in 1987.

2. Corel Draw is the first Graphics Suite with combined vector graphics software, and the Photo Paint program, font manager, and other common features found in all of the versions. Adobe Illustrator was first used as a Font Development Software and Postscript file format.

3. The latest version of Adobe Illustrator is named as ‘CS4’, while Corel Draw’s latest version is named as ‘X4’.

4. The two illustrators have the same goal, but use different tools. The X4 introduces new features, such as new interactive tables, independent page layers, and font integration for more design efficiency, while CS4 introduces new features like transparency in gradients and multiple art boards, for more design efficiency.
