Difference Between Quartz and Diamond

Quartz vs Diamond

The difference between diamond and quartz is that diamonds are much harder than quartz. We can differentiate these minerals on the basis of their chemical properties, usage, price and demand. The chemical formula for diamond is C and it is composed of carbons whereas quartz has the chemical name of SiO2 and it is a composition of silicone dioxide.

The color of the diamond is white or plain colorless. The white shade of diamond can be tinged with a variety of other shades such as orange, brown or yellow. There are some other rare types of diamonds that are found in blue, purple, green or deep red. They have white streak with hardness of 10 MOH scale. On the other hand, quartz is found in a variety of colors such as white, brown, purple and also multicolor along with the colorless variety. Quartz also has white streak and their hardness at MOH scale is 7.

The crystal form of diamond could be cubic or round whereas quartz forms in unusual crystal formations. Diamonds are isometric whereas quartz is hexagonal. Both of them have the transparency scale of transparent to opaque. The gravity of diamond is 3.1-3.5 whereas quartz have 2.6 ‘“ 2.7. Diamond is adamantine with greasy luster whereas quartz can have vitreous, resinous, adamantine and dull luster. Quartz has indiscernible cleavage whereas diamond has 1 or all side also called octahedral. The tenacity of quartz and diamond is being brittle.

The other names for quartz are Silica, Crystalline Quartz also called Macrocrystalline Quartz and Alpha Quartz also called the High Quartz. The varieties of quartz are more than hundreds such as Chalcedony- Microcrystalline, Citrine, Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Rock Crystal, Smoky Quartz, Milky Quartz, Rutilated Quartz and Aventurine variety. Diamond varieties are called the Ballas, Bort, Carbonado also called Black Diamond and the Hexagonal Diamond.

Quartz is the second most common mineral whereas diamond is the hardest known substance on Earth. Diamond is the greatest heat conductor and has the highest refractive index of all minerals. They are cold when touched and has the property to remain hot for a long time. Quartz is also sold as Blue RocK Crystals that are dyed artificially.

Quartz has numerous important uses such as in electronic, used as an oscillator and as an abrasive. It is also used in the ceramics, computers, soap industry and trade. Diamond is the sign of brilliance, nobility and durability and is mostly used in the jewelry industry. The usage of diamond includes thermal insulation, as abrasives, used in electronics and in optics.

Summary:

1. Diamonds are the hardest substance and quartz is the most abundant substance found on Earth.

2. Quartz is softer than diamonds since diamonds have the hardness of 10 according to the MON scale.

3. Diamonds are made of carbons and quartz is made of silicone doxide.

4. Quartz is used for watches, computers and famous trading item.

5. Diamonds are used mostly in the jewelry industry.
