Difference Between Red and White wine

The world of wine can be as complex and intimidating as it is fascinating. For some, wine is a drink to be enjoyed, while for many it is more than just a mere drink; it’s a lifelong pursuit, something that creates infinite opportunities to try new things, see new places, meet new people, and share new experiences. Wine is a complex beverage that can take years to perfect. There is some story behind every bottle of wine. The topic of wine goes as deep as you’re willing to dive. We’re going to operate the assumption that you have a basic understanding of the fact that wine is made from grapes and it can be red or white. But understanding the differences between red and white wine is very important.

Red Wine

Red wine is a type of wine made from dark-colored, whole grapes that are converted to alcohol via a process called fermentation – a process in which the sugars in the juice are exposed to yeast and convert them into alcohol. The color of the wine largely depends on what type of grape was used to make it and how long the skin was left in with the juice before being extracted. But creating a wine that is perfect for you to consume requires a great deal of skill and there is more than one way to do it. The process of making wine varies from region to region and winemaker to winemaker. There are a variety of red wines available all over the world from dry red wine to full-bodied wine to age old wine.

White Wine

White wine, as the name suggests, is made from light-skinned, white grapes that are usually pressed using a pneumatic presser. The grape skins are removed before fermentation that results in a clear juice that yields a transparent yellow-gold or yellow-green color. The light, pale color of the white wine is usually an indication of ageing or oxidation. For example, white wines aged in oak have a deeper color than white wines aged in stainless steel, which doesn’t allow the oxygen to let inside. White wine is normally popular in countries with four seasons such as America and European countries. White wine is rarely popular in Asia and Africa because of their religion and culture.

Difference between Red and White Wine

  1. Wine making

Wine is an alcoholic beverage made with fermented grapes. Fermentation is a process that turns grape juice into alcohol in the presence of yeast. Red wine is made from dark-colored, whole grapes that are converted to alcohol via a process called fermentation. The grapes are fermented along with the seeds and skins of the grapes. White wine is made from light-skinned, white grapes that are usually pressed using a pneumatic presser. The skins and seeds are being removed before the fermentation process.

  2. Aging

    – Red wines are quite flexible when it comes to aging. Some specific types of red wines can take three to five years for aging, while others remain in cellar for decades. Red wines are most commonly aged in wooden barrels, preferably oak that helps the wine mature. White wines, on the other hand, require less aging than red wines because of the fact that they contain little to no tannin, so they oxidize more quickly. White wines are generally aged in stainless steel. But there are exceptions too.

  3. Tannin

Tannins are a group of bitter compounds found abundantly in plants, leaves, and bark. Tannins add some bitterness and some off flavors in your wine. Generally, it is said that more the tannins in wines, the more complex the wines become. These are most commonly found in red wines, whereas white wines do not contain tannins. Tannin increases the body in wine. High tannin red wines can be described as bitter and astringent. This is why red wines tend to taste more full-bodied than white wines.

  1. Hello this is Alex from the wine forum http://www.winebasic101.com. There are many differences between red and white wine. First lets talk about health. Red wine has more tannin than white wine therefor red wine is much better for you than white wine. Tannins are good for you and thats what helps against cardio vascular disease. The reason why red wine has more tannin is because of the process of making wine. When making red wine that use the whole grape. I mean by that is whey they ferment it the skins, stems and the juice all go in the must. With white wine you only use the clear juice nothing else. The skins give the red wine is color and it’s tannins were white wine don’t come into contact with the skins so it has no tannins. Red wines are also aged longer than white wines.
