VCD vs SVCD

The compact disc was a huge step forward in terms of technology and it replaced the cassette as the prominent media for music and movies. In movies, there are a lot of standards that exist. VCD (Video CD) and SVCD (Super Video CD) are only two of the video standard for the compact disc. VCD was initially intended to match the video quality of VHS cassette tapes which were the prominent standard at that time. The quality of SVCD is a lot higher compared to VCD and is often considered to be the midpoint between VCD and DVD.

The difference in video quality is due to several factors. While both standard uses the same codec for encoding audio, VCD uses MPEG 1 and SVCD uses MPEG 2 in encoding the video. The resolution of SVCD is also higher at 480×480 compared to the 352×240 resolution of VCD. Higher resolution simply means greater detail and better images, especially on bigger screens. SVCDs also have a few extra features that are not available in VCD. This includes interactive menus, graphic subtitle screens, karaoke highlighting, and a few others. This extends the capabilities of SVCD and makes it a little bit more like DVD.

The benefits of SVCD come at a price because they both use the same media. To accommodate the higher quality and additional features, SVCD discs tend to have around 35 minutes of video at the maximum settings. VCD discs can contain 80 minutes of video, depending on the actual capacity of the disc. There are also fewer hardware players that can be play SVCD discs. Even DVD players are not capable of playing SVCD discs due to a conflict with the resolution. These problems are not present in VCD as it is the older standard and is supported a lot more. You can play VCD discs in hardware players, computers, and even on some game consoles.
