Difference Between Canon Kiss X4 vs Canon 550D

Canon Kiss X4 vs Canon 550D

If you are a user of the Kiss X3 or the 500D and you are looking to upgrade your camera but you can’t decide on whether the Kiss X4 or the 550D is better, then your problem is actually not that difficult to solve. As you may have already noticed, the Kiss X4 and the 550D have the same specs in all aspects. That’s because they are exactly the same and the only thing that differs is their names as clearly indicated on the body of the camera. Without the name, there is no other difference.

You probably won’t see these two cameras side by side on your local store though as each one is sold in a different region. The Kiss X4 is only sold in Japan while the 550D is what’s available outside of Japan and North America; it is known as the T2i in there. It might seem odd to call the same camera different names but it seems like the Kiss X4 moniker is part of Canon’s marketing strategy as the 550D is the one that follows the standard naming convention of Canon, i.e. 5D, 7D, 300D, 400D, and so forth.

Since they are just the same, discussing the specs of one should be applicable to the other. To start with, the 550D is equipped with an 18 megapixel sensor that is paired with a Digic 4 image processor. It can take photos of up to 5184×3456 at up to 3.7 frames per second continuously. Or full 1080p HD video at 30 frames per second. It’s got a 9 point autofocus sensor and 63 zones for evaluative metering. The LCD monitor on the back of the 550D measures 3 inches and has a 1 megapixel resolution.

The 550D is compatible with both EF and EF-S lenses so there should be no problem if you’ve already bought expensive lenses for your older Canon camera. A BG-E8 battery grip can also be added to extend battery life as well as improve the handling of the camera. Storage is not a problem with the 550D as it can accommodate SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards for up to 2TB maximum capacity on a single card. Remote camera control can also be achieved via an E3 type wired remote or with an RC-6 remote.

Summary:
1. The Kiss X4 and the 550D are the same exact camera
2. The Kiss X4 is being sold in Japan while the 550D is being sold globally

  1. Very nice comparison. So are they really the same in every exact way? Isn’t it Kiss X4 is just another name for 550D just like the same with T1i and 500D.

  2. I have a Kiss X4 and so far I’ve spotted two minor differences between it and the 550D, neither of which are actual differences in the camera hardware itself.

The Kiss X4 comes with a LC-E8 charger, the 550D a LC-E8E. The LC-E8 does not have a power cord and only fits directly into US style sockets.

The firmware on the Kiss X4 only has English and Japanese as UI languages. The 550D has many languages to choose from.

  3. That was amazing.thanks to all. it was really helpful.unfortunately in Iran all of 3 models are available ,and you can find them with different prices!!

  4. Hi,
I just called up a local website which has displayed the Kiss X4 and 550D with a price tag difference of 170 AUD!!
They told me the Kiss X4 can record only NTSC while the 550D can record both NTSC and PAL. Is that true?? If it is, then it can be a very good reason to pay 170 more for me.

    Please let me know ASAP.

Nope. My X4 records in PAL just fine.

  5. Same here in the Philippines. They have different prices that’s why I’m confused. Thanks to you guys!!

  6. Thank Christ (at last) for a clear and unambiguous definition. tommy
