Difference Between iPad and eBook Reader

iPad vs eBook Reader

The iPad has ruffled quite a few feathers when it was unveiled since its functions do cover those of different devices. One of the devices that it can compete with is the eBook reader, which is used for, well, reading eBooks. The biggest difference between the two would be their functionality. Although some eBook readers may provide other functionalities aside from reading eBooks, it does not compare to what you can do on the iPad. The iPad is a multimedia device and it can do majority of the things that you can do on a laptop. You can watch movies, listen to music, browse websites, and even read eBooks.

When it comes to the hardware, you would see that each has its own strengths and weaknesses. The iPad uses an LCD screen just like that used with laptops and computers while eBook readers use screens with e-ink technology. LCD screens can reproduce a wide variety of colors and have a much faster response time, making it suitable for movies and games. E-ink screens can only show shades of gray and have a very slow response time. The most major advantage of e-ink screens is that it is more natural, more like paper, than LCD screens. It causes a lot less stress to the eyes even when used for prolonged periods.

The screen of eBook readers also lacks a backlight. LCD screens, like that on the iPad, require backlighting in order for the text and images to be visible. The downside to this is you would need to have an external light when using an eBook reader. The good part is the reduced power consumption. As reading is an activity that requires a lot of time, eBook readers are also expected to last for a very long time. A typical eBook reader can last for up to a couple of weeks before needing a recharge. The iPad on the other hand is very power hungry and would run out within a day. That may be longer than other tablets, but is nowhere near that of eBook readers.

Summary:

1. The iPad is a multimedia device while an eBook reader is just that

2. The iPad uses an LCD screen while eBook readers use e-ink technology

3. The iPad is more straining to the eyes on prolonged use compared to eBook readers

4. The iPad has its own backlighting while eBook readers do not

5. The iPad’s battery does not last as long as that of eBook readers
