Difference Between Sony Playstation 3 and PS3 Slim

Sony Playstation 3 vs. PS3 Slim

As they did with older versions of the console, Sony has released a slim version of their Playstation 3. Obviously, the main difference between the two models is that the slim version is, well, slim; but just how slim? The PS3 slim is roughly 2/3 the volume, height, and weight of the original PS3. But when you consider that the PS3 is a heavyweight compared to other consoles like the Xbox 360, this just brings the PS3 slim back down to the weight class of the other consoles.

One major consequence of the PS3’s slimness is its inability to reliably stand vertically like its predecessor did. Because of this, Sony provides an optional vertical stand that sells for $24. Of course, the PS3 slim can still balance vertically on its own if you’re so inclined, but it is cheaper to buy a $24 stand than to risk breaking a $300 console.

A key improvement with the PS3 slim is the improved power consumption due to the 45nm cell processor. The PS3 slim consumes at about half the rate of the original PS3. Since the PS3 slim consumes less power, there is lesser heat to dissipate. And because the PS3 is cooler, it doesn’t need to be cooled to much with fans; resulting in less noise.

Another change is the bigger hard drive. The PS3 slim is equipped with a 120GB drive. Although there are versions that have a bigger capacity, the equal of that model only had an 80GB drive. Also very noticeable is the change in the outward finish from glossy piano black to matte. The former looks very class but is a fingerprint magnet while the latter is a bit dull but looks quite sturdy.

The change that many people consider to be quite big is the removal of the ability to install custom Linux operating systems in the PS3 slim. A custom OS makes the old PS3 perform just like a computer. Many do not use this feature though as it is quite advanced and beyond the ability of most people.

Summary:

1. The PS3 Slim is smaller and lighter than the old PS3
2. The PS3 Slim needs a vertical stand while the old PS3 doesn’t
3. The PS3 Slim consumes less power than the old PS3
4. The PS3 Slim has a bigger hard drive than the old PS3
5. The PS3 Slim has a matte finish while the old PS3 has a glossy finish
6. The PS3 Slim has no Linux support while the old PS3 did
