Apple iPhone 4S vs iPhone 4

As everybody was waiting for the release of the iPhone 5, Apple decided to throw everyone a curve ball and announced the release of the iPhone 4S. It looks identical to the iPhone 4 since none of the external aspects were changed. But under the hood, the iPhone 4S is significantly better than its predecessor. The first major difference between the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4 is the chipset and processor it uses. The iPhone 4S uses an improved A5 chipset that has a dual core processor running at 1Ghz. The processor of the iPhone 4 is able to operate at 1Ghz but is purportedly underclocked to just 800Mhz to save on power.

Another major improvement in the iPhone 4S is the inclusion of both GSM and CDMA radios into the same handset, making it a world phone. The iPhone 4, as most other phones, comes with either radio and is limited to certain areas, unlike the iPhone 4S, which is usable just about anywhere.

The camera of the iPhone 4 has a relatively low resolution of 5 megapixels by today’s standards. The iPhone 4S upgrades this to a much higher 8 megapixels for larger and clearer pictures. Video recording resolution has also been improved to 1080p, bringing the iPhone 4S at par with most other smartphones that had these capability a few years back.

One of the main selling points of the iPhone 4S is Siri, a personal assistant that uses speech recognition to perform tasks that are spoken to it. Although the iPhone 4 can be upgraded to iOS 5, the version of the operating system that features Siri, it still would not work on an updated iPhone 4. There are theories floating on why this is so. Some say that the single core of the iPhone 4 is not powerful enough to actually handle Siri. Another theory is that Apple is just holding back Siri to make the iPhone 4S more attractive to current iPhone 4 owners. Whether the iPhone 4 is capable of running Siri or not, is going to be revealed in the next few months.
