Difference Between ThinkPad and IdeaPad

ThinkPad vs IdeaPad

ThinkPad and IdeaPad are two different product lines launched by the company Lenovo. They are both laptop computer lines. ThinkPad was launched in 2005 and IdeaPad was launched in 2008.

ThinkPad
ThinkPad was originally a product of IBM launched in 1992. It was designed by a collaboration between Tom Hardy, IBM design head; Richard Sapper, an Italian designer, and Kazuhiko Yamazaki, design head in Japan for Yamato Design Center. The notebook was inspired by a Japanese traditional lunch box called a “Shokado bento box.” Lenovo, a Chinese manufacturer, purchased the ThinkPad in 2005 in a 5-year deal.

The ThinkPad computers are business-oriented laptops. They are very popular with schools, business corporations, etc. They have been known for their high quality, reliability, durability, and high performance. Some of the characteristic features of the ThinkPad are that they are usually black and have composite cases made of magnesium, titanium, or reinforced plastic. They have a TrackPoint device, LCD screens, LED keyboard, active protection system, client security solution, fingerprint reader, roll cage design, and accelerometer sensor, etc.

Some changes were made in the original design and material of the ThinkPad by Lenovo. They started using a plastic lid for better wireless reception, introduced tablet PCs, widescreen displays, added a rubber cushion for the hard drive tray, added Linux support in some models, added an intercooling mechanism, BIOS option, etc.

One of the highest achievements of the ThinkPad is that it is the only laptop which has been used in space and is certified and approved for usage in the International Space Station. Their features include modifications to handle weightlessness, low density, and an adaptation to 28-volt power which is a very specific requirement of the Space Station.

Ideapad
IdeaPad is a laptop computer line which is consumer based and was launched by the Chinese company Lenovo in 2008. Lenovo made many changes in the design and features of the IdeaPad to make it more consumer-based instead of the business-based line of the ThinkPad. Some of the designs and other features introduced in the IdeaPad to make it more consumer-based are: widescreen touch controls, Dolby speaker systems, frameless screens, VeriFace facial recognition system, and a glossy screen. One of the main differences between IdeaPad and ThinkPad is the absence of the Trackpoint in IdeaPads.

Lenovo introduced three different models of IdeaPad; the S series, the U series, the Y series, and the Z series. All the series have their own special features, and the designs have been continuously improved with each new model.
