Difference Between Left and Right Brain

Left vs Right Brain

In all vertebrates and most invertebrates, the brain is the center of the nervous system. It is found in the head where the sensory organs such as the eyes, ears, tongue, and nose are also located. It controls all organs of the body.

The human body is bilateral, meaning it has left and right sides, which are symmetrical. The brain also has two sides called hemispheres that interact with one half of the body but with crossed connections. The left brain hemisphere interacts with the right side of the body while the right brain hemisphere interacts with the left.

While both brain hemispheres may have similar functions in motor and other systems, in language and spatial cognition they distinctly differ. They process information in different ways. The left-brain hemisphere processes it from parts to the whole while the right-brain hemisphere processes it from the whole to parts oftentimes seeing the whole picture first before the details.

The left-brain hemisphere also processes information in sequence while the right-brain hemisphere processes it at random. People who are left-brained are more systematic; they always plan their actions and oftentimes list things that they have to do. Right-brained people, on the other hand, may jump from one task to another at random.
The left-brain hemisphere is also good at processing symbols and language. It is usually good at mathematics and problem solving while the right-brain hemisphere is good at processing information that is presented concretely so illustrations are necessary for it to understand better.

A right-brained person may know the right answer to a problem, but he does not know how to present it, and he is oftentimes at a loss for what to say while a left-brained person will have no difficulty at expressing himself verbally.
Left-brained people also follow rules, but right-brained people would try to change them. The left-brain hemisphere is associated with being upright, sensible, direct, true, hard-edged, and forceful while the right-brain hemisphere is associated with being flexible, more playful, more complex, diagonal, and fanciful.

The right-brain hemisphere is spatially oriented, appreciates music, non-verbal, global, emotional, emphatic, witty, and humorous while the left-brain hemisphere is verbal, analytic, rational, realistic, and rigid although it lacks emotional comprehension.

Summary:

1.The right-brain hemisphere is spatially oriented and is associated with being emotional, emphatic, witty, humorous, flexible, playful, and complex while the left-brain hemisphere is associated with being upright, sensible, verbal, analytic, realistic, rational, direct, and forceful.
2.Both the right and left-brain hemispheres may have the same motor and sensory functions, but they differ in language and spatial cognition.
3.While the left-brain hemisphere processes information in sequence, the right-brain hemisphere does not.
4.The left-brain hemisphere is good at processing symbols and processes information from parts to the whole; the right-brain hemisphere is good only at processing information that are presented concretely, and it processes them from the whole to parts.
