Ovulation vs Period

The female reproductive system has two primary parts, the uterus and the ovary. Vaginal and uterine discharges are produced in the uterus, and it is also there that the fertilized egg develops into a fetus and grows while egg cells are produced in the ovaries.

The ovaries are also responsible for the production of ova or egg cells and for hormonal secretions. They are located near the walls of the pelvic cavity, one on the left side and the other on the right. Ovulation occurs when ova or eggs are produced in the ovaries. It is a periodic process wherein mature ovarian follicles are split and discharge ova or eggs. During ovulation, a mature egg is discharged by the ovary ready to be fertilized. If there is no fertilization, the uterine lining is shed and blood will be discharged from the body.

This is known as a woman’s monthly menstrual period, also known as a period. Period or menstruation may be overt or covert. Covert menstruation is when the endometrium is reabsorbed by the body and is experienced by the females of other mammal species.

Human females experience overt menstruation or a period. The bleeding occurs in the uterus and exits through the vagina in what is known as a monthly menstrual flow. A regular menstruation or period usually lasts from two to eight days starting from the first day of menstrual bleeding until it stops. The bleeding starts slowly then gradually increases and then decreases after a few days. During her period, a woman may feel pain, headaches, cramps, and emotional disturbances. Women usually feel unusually tired, uncomfortable, and experience mood swings.
The menstrual cycle takes 28 days and ovulation occurs during the 14th day of the menstrual cycle. During this time a woman will experience minor pains and have a heightened sense of smell and sexual drive.
While ovulation occurs naturally, it can be induced. Women who have oligomenorrhea, a condition wherein menstruation happens infrequently, it can be treated with induced ovulation. It is also used for in vitro fertilization.
