Difference Between Pads and Tampons

Pads vs Tampons

When a girl reaches the age of puberty, she experiences a cycle of physiological changes called the menstrual cycle. It plays an important role in the process of reproduction and is controlled by the endocrine system.

A menstrual cycle usually lasts for 28 days and has three distinct phases; menstruation, the follicular phase, and the luteal phase. The length of each phase varies from each cycle.

In the phase of menstruation, which usually happens at the end of each reproductive cycle, there is blood flow from the vagina. This occurs when the endometrium which is the inner membrane of the uterus, is reabsorbed by the body.

When there is blood flow, it is necessary to use protective pads or tampons so that the blood will not stain clothes. They are made to absorb the blood and they are available in different varieties and brands.

The question that each girl who has just started her menstrual period usually asks is: which of the two is better, a pad or a tampon? The choice will depend on each girl’s taste and preference.

Pads, also known as sanitary pads or napkins, are rectangular materials that stick to the inside of your underwear. They are made with absorbent materials, and some have wings that help contain blood.

Tampons are also made of absorbent materials, but they are pressed into a cylinder. It is inserted into the vagina to keep blood from flowing outside and staining the underwear. Plastic or cardboard applicators are included to help put the tampon in place.

Pads are easier to use, and they are more convenient and helpful during heavy blood flow. On the other hand, tampons are more handy: you can carry them anywhere, and you can even put them inside your pockets.

Pads are harder to dispose, and they can be messy sometimes. While tampons are smaller and easier to dispose of, putting them in can be a challenge. They can get stuck, and there are times that you will forget that you are wearing them and must take them out.

Tampon use can result to a higher risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome and can be uncomfortable to use the first time. They can also make cramps worse, in which case it is better to use pads instead.

The choice is yours. Just remember not to buy a product based on advertisements but based on your convenience. Also remember to stay away from scented products, because this can irritate the vagina and cause infections.

Summary

1. Pads are rectangular absorbent materials that are placed on the underwear while tampons are cylindrical absorbent materials that are inserted into the vagina.
2. Tampons are handy and easy to dispose of while pads are bulky and harder to dispose of.
3. Pads are easier to use while using tampons can sometimes hurt and make cramps worse.
4. There is a higher risk of infections and Toxic Shock Syndrome if you use tampons instead of pads.
