STI vs STD

When sexual promiscuity hits someone, it never ceases unless one is disciplined and determined to abstain from it and stick to one partner. This is not only the cause that makes it hard for people to abstain but also because of sexual addiction.

On the other side of this issue comes a less grave outcome of this undertaking. It is less grave than HIV and AIDS. It’s the STI and STD.

“STI” is “sexually transmitted infection” while “STD” stands for “sexually transmitted disease.”

For a short history, STI and STD are categorized under VD or venereal disease. That was two decades ago. Now, it was further classified into two which are STI and STD.

STI is used to identify someone who does not manifest any sign or symptom regarding a sexual illness but is a candidate for it. The person does not know yet as well as the physician if the client has it until further tests and further manifestations occur. When someone has an STI, the client has infection inside the body caused by bacteria, virus, etc. which may predispose that person to specific signs and symptoms in the near future.

STD, on the other hand, is the other way around. It is already determined that this type of infection is contributing to the disease. The diagnosis is confirmed. The manifestations, signs, and symptoms are being felt by the man or woman. It also shows on the body based on the assessment of the physician.

When there is an STD, treatment and intervention are also specific so patients may already be prescribed some medications depending on the sexual disease. In an STI, since there are no manifestations yet, no interventions can be done as of the moment.

“STD” is being proposed to be replaced with “STI” because not all STD’s have significant signs and symptoms. This is a fact as certain STD’s such as chlamydia, herpes, and gonorrhea do not present signs and symptoms.
