Difference Between Clonazepam and Lorazepam

Clonazepam vs Lorazepam

It is normal to worry sometimes. Our lives are shaped by varying factors. It is not always sunny as sometimes rain pours into our lives once in a while. But as these challenges come to us, these should not be our hindrance towards living a happy and contented life. Life is too short to take these things seriously.

Sometimes the worry turns into a longer agony. It becomes anxiety. Anxiety is far different from simple worry as anxiety has different classifications such as mild, moderate, severe, and panic anxiety. There is also what you call as GAD or generalized anxiety disease. In this article, we’ll examine the differences between two anxiolytics or drugs that treat anxiety. These are Clonazepam and Lorazepam. Let us tackle the differences.

Clonazepam and Lorazepam are both classified under benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines act by inducing sleepiness, relaxing muscles, preventing convulsions and anxiety from building up.

Clonazepam is a generic name of the drug Klonopin. Lorazepam ,on the other hand, is a generic name of the drug Ativan. Roche Pharmaceuticals manufactures Clonazepam in the United States while Lorazepam is manufactured by Baxter Pharmaceuticals in the United States as well.

Clonazepam is indicated for anxiety and panic attacks. It is also used for insomnia and epilepsy.Lorazepam is more addictive and should be used under the guidance of health professionals. Lorazepam is used for chronic anxiety such as GAD and insomnia. The adverse effects of Lorazepam are: aggression, suicidal ideations, and increased hostility.

Clonazepam is generally indicated for seizures and panic disorders while Lorazepam is generally used for anxiety disorders. Another difference is that Clonazepam is taken in two to three doses while Lorazeapam is taken in three to four doses. Clonazepam has a side effect that suppresses depression while Lorazeapam has a euphoric side effect that will make you feel happy.

  1. I am currently taking Ativan 2mg 3x a day for anxiety. I have read the differences for clonopin and Ativan, an feel I am on the right pill. some docs have said that clanazipam is the better. could you give me more info on the two. thanks muchly. Robin

    • I have taken Ativan for the occasional panic attacks. It worked great. I started taking clonopin last night (insomia), to help me relax and sleep. It was the worst nights sleep I every experienced. I had lucid dreams (when you realize in your in your dream your dreaming) and also night terrors. Anyone out there experience what I did? thanks Terri

      • Hi Terry, my experience with clonazepam and sleep,,, clonazepam side affect is not allowing a person to fall into a deep sleep, to over come this what

works very well at night is I take one Diphenhydramine HC I 25mg, it’s benedril if I spelled that right, I buy the Kroger store brand over the Counter drug,,good luck,

        • I have been on clozazepam. For about 6 yrs works great on anxiety ! Just got put on lorazpine to try for breathing problems I’m having for cancer!! I’m hoping it helps when these attacks happen!!

  2. In my opinion, being a long term survivor of severe panic attacks, klonopin works the best as it remains in the system for a considerable length of time. Ativan and Xanax are like being on a roller coaster.

Note to all…years ago I was on Xanax and never upped the .5 three times a day dose. I started getting horrific slamming headaches and elevated BP between doses. It took me a long time to figure out that I was going into withdrawal between doses.

  3. I take Clonazepam for PTSD. I have taken Alprazolam, Lorazepam and Oxazepam as well. Statement #6 Is NOT correct. Many experience euphoria when first taking ANY benzodiazepine. Clonazepam DOES NOT “have a side effect that suppresses depression.” Depression IS a side effect of Clonazepam. It’s right here on the material safety data sheet, given to me by the pharmacist. It’s all over the web, CLONAZEPAM CAN CAUSE DEPRESSION. Please correct this misinformation.
