Painkillers are widely sold out in the market. Once in a while we get painful muscles, joints, head, and so on and so forth. Some pains are ordinary and can be treated with over-the-counter painkillers. However, some pains are dangerous such as chest pain and intense stomach pain. The more intense the pain is, the more it becomes dangerous. However, there are silent pain killers.

Two of the most popular over-the-counter drugs are Motrin and ibuprofen. These two drugs are earning millions of dollars each year. Let us tackle the differences.

Ibuprofen is a generic drug while Motrin is one of the trade names of ibuprofen together with Advil, Nurofen, Nuprin, and a lot more. So if you think about it, ibuprofen is a generic drug and Motrin is a branded drug.

The problems with buying generic drugs is sometimes the effect on the patients. Some doctors would prefer branded drugs because these are usually more potent than generic drugs. However, generic drugs are much cheaper. So, in this case, ibuprofen is much cheaper than the branded Motrin.

It also temporarily decreases fever. Ibuprofen is also indicated for the same such as inflammation in arthritis, pain during menstruation called dysmenorrhea. 1. “However, generic drugs are much cheaper. So, in this case, ibuprofen is much cheaper than the branded Motrin. ”
This is not always true. Sometimes generic drugs are much cheaper than the brand name drug, especially depending on your insurance. For example, certain brand name drugs like Adderall have deals with insurance companies and the insurance is willing to pay up to 90% of the cost, but will not cover ANY of the cost of the generic version.

  2. ^The first sentence should have generic and brand name switched.

  3. Motrin is by far better than Ibuprofen, I’ve tried Ibuprofen for my migraines 800mg and it does nothing, whereas two to three Motrin will stop it every time. This is one of the drugs worth paying extra for!

    • Ann – that is complete nonsense and a good example of mental conditioning. They are the exact same ingredients.

      • It isn’t nonsense. This is happening to me right now which is why I was searching for differences between the two online. I didn’t know they were the same basic ingredient. All i know is they sure don’t work the same. I just had a baby and mortrin was given at the hospital for all the associated post partum pains. I asked my aunt to go to the pharm and she came back with 600g of ibuprofen as opposed to mortrin. Let us just say the ibuprofen has been absolutely useless as i am in as much pain as the moments right after i had the baby! I had zero pains throughout my 2 day hospital stay as I was given mortrin every 6hrs like clockwork.

      • Ann, it is not nonsense. Only we can tell how something effects us and Ive had “same ingredient” items affect me totslly different. It isnt logical but it is true.

  4. I might agree with Motrin working better then ibuprofen as I am currently at home post-op from a hysterectomy where my bladder was sliced and I still have a catheter for almost a week due to that I also had a drainage tube for blood which was from my husband’s view site 10 to 12 in with a 3-inch sponge on the end of it pull out of a hole the size of a nail. I have to say I just about it hit the ceiling on that one needless to say I was on Motrin in the hospital as I will not take pain meds and honestly that was enough for me to tolerate the pain let me emphasize tolerate. That being said, I just ran out of Motrin and my husband brought home ibuprofen which I have been taking all day and it seems like I have taken nothing. Will come back and give my honest opinion when I switch back to Motrin at some point tomorrow God willing. I appreciate all the comments they’ve been helpful.

  5. I have found motrin to be much more effective in pain relief than ibuprofen.

  6. You indicated that those age 60 and above should not take Motrin or Ibuprofen why exactly is that?

    • My son also reports that motrin works for him and not ibuprofen. I think it could be due to genetic differences and the filler material.
