Difference Between Tylenol 3 and Percocet

Tylenol 3 vs Percocet

Tylenol 3 is a drug which contains codeine, caffeine and acetaminophen. The amount of acetaminophen is 300mg, codeine is 30mg and caffeine is 15mg. This combination is used for mild to moderate pain which is associated with conditions like allergies, fever, menstrual pain, headaches and colds. It comes as a tablet to be taken by the mouth. It is a hard, round and white tablet which is flat faced and had bevelled edges. It has the word “McNEIL” written on one side and on the other side, the number ‘3’ is written. Its recommended dose is 1-2 tablets every four hours. This can be adjusted according to the amount of pain which is being experienced. Things which can affect the dosage required by a person include body weight and other existing medical conditions.

Percocet is a drug which contains Paracetamol and Oxycodone. It is a narcotic pain reliever and unlike Tylenol 3, it is used to treat moderate to severe acute pain. The tablets are available in 6 combinations of acetaminophen and oxycodone hydrochloride. The appearance of each tablet depends on the combination. Some are yellow whilst others are pink. The recommended dose is 1-2 tablets every six hours. Things which can affect the dosage required by a person include body weight and other existing medical conditions.
Both of these two drugs are addictive and can be abused.
The main difference between Tylenol 3 and Percocet is that Tylenol 3 contains Codeine whilst Percocet contains Oxycodone. This difference in constitution means that the results they produce are different.

3. Percocet is used to treat moderate to severe acute pain whilst Tylenol 3 is used to treat mild to moderate pain.
4. Tylenol 3 is an over the counter drug which means that it is readily available. Percocet cannot be bought without a prescription as it is a prescription-only drug. This means that it is not readily available.

  1. Tylenol 3, since it contains codeine, is NOT an over -the- counter drug. It requires a prescription, just as percocet does.

  2. In Canada Tylenol 1’s with codiene are over the counter but not tylenol 2’s and 3’s. Tylenol 1’s only have 8 mg of codiene per tablet, they are not very strong.

  3. Tylenol 3 with Codeine is presciption only. It must be prescribed by a medical doctor and filled at a pharmacy. At least here in the USA it is, this may differ in other countries.

    • Yes, Tylenol 2 and Tylenol 3 are a controlled drug Canada wide. I should know, I was heavily addicted for well over ten years. They are a miracle pill when used correctly for short term. I would recommend Tylenol extra strength or Advil. The codeine in the T2 & T3 is extremely addictive and can lead to a big problem. The withdrawal (to go without) is horrible and most cannot stop on their own. So not recommended for more than 5 days. Anyone can become addicted. At first I threw up, does not mean allergic.

  4. Tylonol 3 is not readily available to Canadians. It is a narcotic drugs, and like all narcotics, you cannot purchase without a prescription.

  5. When you google T3 it’s amazing how many sites pop up advising different ways to abuse it. No wonder MD’s are becoming so hesitant to prescribe it.

  6. Tylenol with Codeine is OTC in the UK. Best place that always has them in stock is Boots. The same is true in many other countries.

  7. How long do i have to wait after taking 2 t3s to take 1 percocet?
