Xanax is a brand name of Alprazolam which is the generic name of this drug. Klonopin is a brand name of Clonazepam which is the generic name of this drug.

Xanax is 50 per cent stronger than Klonopin. However, the advantage of taking Klonopin is that it lasts longer. It lasts longer because it is metabolized by the liver more slowly in the body.

People are saying that Xanax is preferred less to Klonopin. Klonopin is indicated for panic attacks and seizure disorders. Xanax, on the other hand, is not widely prescribed for seizure disorders. It is more prescribed in panic disorders such as panic attacks plus anxiety disorders. Klonopin is preferred more for the fact that the onset of the action of the drug is slower but lasts longer. It is a drug like those of extended release medications. Xanax, on the other hand, has a faster therapeutic onset but does not last as long.

Rapid cessation in taking these drugs results in benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome which includes tachycardia, diaphoresis, tremors, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, palpitations, and memory loss.

Klonopin was approved in the USA in 1997 while Xanax was released during 1981.

Klonopin is available in 0.5 mg., 1 mg. and 2 mg. doses while Xanax instant release is available in 0.125 mg., 0.25 mg., 0.5 mg., 1 mg. and 2 mg. doses while the extended release is available at 0.5 mg., 1 mg., 2mg. and 3 mg. strength.

Special precautions must be given when the population is taking benzodiazepines such as Xanax and Klonopin. First, for the elderly, they are at risk for falls and injuries because of the sedating effects of these drugs. For the younger people, Klonopin is not recommended for children under 18 years of age for its hazardous effects. Klonopin should also not be given to people with chronic schizophrenia.
