Difference Between a Rooster and a Chicken

a Rooster vs a Chicken

What is a rooster and a chicken? A rooster is a male chicken and is also known as a cock. So in usual terms, a male chicken is a rooster and a female chicken is a hen.

A rooster is known to protect the group of chickens especially the female ones. Roosters are known to be more aggressive than the female chickens.

Unlike the female chickens, the roosters are known for their “cock-a-doodle-doo” during dawn. The female chickens do not sing during the dawn. It is not only that rooster’s crow in the dawn but also during the daytime, and it is said that it produces such sounds for protecting their territory.

Another thing that has to be seen is that roosters are grown mainly for their meat and fighting. Cock fighting is well known and practised in many parts of the world. On the contrary, female chickens are reared mainly for the eggs. Unlike the hens, roosters do not lay eggs. Roosters have more stamina and strength than the female chickens.

Unlike other chickens, a rooster has a thick comb (crest of flesh on the head). The rooster combs are more red and prominent than the other chickens. Moreover, the roosters also have a more prominent wattle (lobe of flesh on the chin) than the other chickens. Unlike the chickens, roosters also have a bigger and bright wattle.

A rooster has bright feather colors when compared to chickens. The female chicken is known to have pale feather colors and has shades of pale white.
