Difference Between RSS and RSS 2

RSS vs RSS 2

RSS, or Rich Site Summary or RDF Site Summary, is used to publish blog posts, news updates, audio and video files in a standard format. An RSS document is referred to as feed, channel, or even web feed which includes the relevant text with additional information like publishing dates and authorship. This helps publishers to syndicate the data automatically whereas for readers it’s getting timely updates from relevant feeds from websites into a single place. Software like RSS reader, aggregator or feed reader that may be web, desktop, or mobile-based is used to read RSS feeds. RSS gives the user an option to subscribe to the websites of interest instead of manually visiting every website one after another. The subscribed website’s updates are downloaded for the user. RSS feeds are based on XML format.

When we refer to Really Simple Syndication, then we are implying RSS 2 instead of RSS. It is backward compatible with RSS 0.91 and was authored by Dave Winer. RSS 2 has two parts, namely, label and domain. It does not have a schema. It can be either encrypted or signed like other available web contents. RSS 2 has two processing libraries: FeedParser and Rome. RSS 2 has removed the element that was part of the previous RSS versions. RSS 2 caters to both plain text and HTML, but since it has dropped the attribute, there is no way to distinguish between the two. It does not use XML markup making reusability difficult.

summary

1. RSS 2 introduced enclosures thus enabling podcasting in software like iTunes. RSS later came up with an enclosure extension called mod_enclosure.

2. RSS 2 does not support full text with synopsis whereas RSS is used as an extension in this case.

Summary:

1. In the current market scenario, RSS acquires 17% of shares while 67% of shares fall

under RSS 2.

2. RSS is based on RDF and is not under the control of a single vendor.

3. RSS 2 implements extensibility via modules. It is put to use for metadata-rich

syndication.

4. RSS was introduced in 1999 as a simple, easy-to-understand format. All its documents must conform to the specifications of XML 1.0 as outlined by w3C website.

5. When a website wants to publish contents form other websites, they create an RSS

document and register it with an RSS publisher.

  1. I have been browsing online more than three hours today,
yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It’s pretty worth enough for me. Personally, if all web owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the internet will be much more useful than ever before.
