Harry Potter Series for Kids vs Adults

Harry Potter is a series of seven books written by J. K. Rowling who is a British author. These books are fantasy novels basically written for kids. The story revolves around a teenage wizard named Harry Potter who, along with his two best friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, tries to overcome the evil and dark character named Lord Voldemort who is a wizard and wants to conquer the whole wizarding world and rule the non-magical people. Harry Potter and his friends are students of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The first Harry Potter book was released on June 30th, 1997, and since then has become one of the most read and sought after books worldwide. Though it was written for children, the characters and the plot have a dark tone to them and are equally thrilling for adult readers. Once the book became popular among adults as well as children, it was decided by the publishers and the author to publish books with two different covers. The children’s versions of the books have very colorful illustrations on the cover that are very nice and bright, watercolor illustrations whereas the adult versions have more sophisticated illustrations using dark and black colors. This decision was made after the fifth edition came out.

Adult readers felt uncomfortable reading Harry Potter while in public, for example, in a café or library or trains while traveling. So it was a marketing decision to take out two different book covers, one for kids and one for adults. There is no difference in the text or story of these two versions. They are identical. Another thing which is different in the kids’ version and the adult version is the font size. In the adult version the font size is smaller than the kids’ version.

While we are discussing the differences between the Harry Potter kid’s version and adult version, we might also mention that there is a difference between the U.K. editions and the American version. The difference is not in the story line but the language used. As we all know, British English and American English use different spellings. One of the words which are different between the American and British versions is the use of “sorcerer” and “philosopher.”
