Difference Between Nitro and Nitro Classic

Discord is a free voice, video and instant messaging platform originally built for gamers to stay connected with anyone and everyone easily. It started as a communication platform, but in a short span of time, became a general use platform for all kinds of communities, from writers to artists to K-Pop stans. It allows users to create servers (group communication hubs) to host like-minded conversations as well as channels with each server to demarcate different types of communications by mode or topic.

Discord Nitro is a paid membership service on Discord that grants special perks to a server and comes in two options: Nitro and Nitro Classic. We take a look at the difference between the two plans.

So what is Nitro Classic?

Nitro Classic is the more affordable subscription tier that Discord first introduced in 2017. For a monthly fee of $4.99, users get access to all the features Discord is known for, such as channel discussions, audio and video chat, direct messaging, and more. The Classic plan offers users access to custom emojis and animated emotes, animated avatars, custom number tags, higher quality video sharing, and an upload boost from 8MB to 50MB. You cannot use the server’s custom emotes in another server, if you’re a free user. However, the Classic Nitro allows full use of your custom emotes in other Discord servers.

So then what is Nitro?

Nitro is the more expensive Discord Nitro plan that levels up your server with more emotes, better bandwidth, and optimized file sharing, all for a monthly subscription fee of $9.99. For year-long subscription, Nitro is priced $99.99 per year. The Nitro offers everything the Nitro Classic offers, plus exclusive Nitro game perks to ramp up your experience on participating gaming titles and server boosts which allows you to do more with community rallying around servers, unlocking various level perks, and more. Server boosts also come in handy for companies using Discord for workplace communication.

 – The free users and the Nitro Classic users are restricted to 2,000 characters per message. The Nitro Classic is the low cost subscription plan that limits the message capacity to half, which means you can enter only 2,000 characters in chat box at a time. The Nitro subscription plan extends your message capacity to 4,000 characters at a time.

Offerings

– Nitro Classic offers servers animated avatars, custom number tags, custom emotes for use in other Discord servers, higher quality screen sharing (720p at 60fps)/ (1080p at 30fps), Nitro badges, file uploading limit to 50MB, etc. The new and improved Nitro offers everything the Nitro Classic offers and level up the offerings with more emotes, better bandwidth, optimized file sharing, increased upload limit (100MB), HD Go Live streaming, and more.

Server Boost

 – Server boost is an optional feature, but certainly supercharges the server of your choice by offering some fresh new and improved collective perks for your community to enjoy. Server boosts allow you to do more with the basic features and offer better audio quality, improved video quality, and increased upload limit with each server boost. Think of the boost as upgrading from a PS4 to a PS5. The Nitro Classic has no boosts, while the Nitro gives you 2X server boosts.

Pricing

 – Nitro Classic is the less expensive offering that gives you everything Discord is known for, at a monthly fee of $4.99. If you opt for a year-long subscription, you have to pay $49.99 a year.
