EMC vs NetApp
During the early days of computing, application software is installed on every user’s computer. The development of Local Area Networks has led to client-server computer models wherein data is stored in a server and can be accessed by clients provided that it has a version of the application installed.
It uses the client’s memory and CPU to process data, but the files and documents are stored in the server. Today, this system has been upgraded to what is called cloud computing which does not require applications to be installed for the client.
Everything is centralized in the server removing the need for clients to upgrade or manage licensing concerns of applications that are used. Two Information Technology companies that are involved in cloud computing are NetApp and EMC.
NetApp, Inc. is a computer storage and data management company which was founded in 1992. Its headquarters is located in Sunnyvale, California, and it is a member of NASDAQ-100. Its chief product is their line of NetApp filers or file storage. It is a storage device that controls the file system and displays files and directories to the hosts of networks. It uses the Network File System (NFS) protocol as well as the Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol.
The operating system used by NetApp filers is the Data ONTAP which has two versions, Data ONTAP 7G and Data ONTAP GX which will be consolidated into Data ONTAP 8. It also has the Virtual Tape Library (VTL) for magnetic tape data storage virtualization and NetApp Dedupe. It also offers the following: platform OS, protocols, software, storage and security systems. It aims at providing cost-efficient solutions to customers’ storage and data management concerns. Its closest competitor is the EMC Corporation.
EMC Corporation, on the other hand, is a company that produces and supports computer and virtual information hardware, software, and services. It has its headquarters in Hopkinton, Massachusetts and was founded in 1979 by R. Egan, R. Marino, and a third individual.
It offers the following: IT management; cloud computing; education and technology services; data warehousing, backup, recovery, and archiving; virtualization; information security; and storage. While NetApp uses file storage based on a Local Area Network (LAN), EMC uses block storage based on Storage Area Network (SAN).
It aims at providing an efficient, secure, reliable, and easy-to-use solution to every user’s storage, security, virtualization, and data warehousing and management problems. Some of its products are: Celerra, Ionix, NetWorker, VNX, PowerPath, Documentum xCP, and many more.

3.NetApp uses Fiber Channel (FC) protocol, the Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) protocol, and the Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) protocol while the EMC also uses FC, iSCSI and NAS which includes Network File Systems (NFS) and Common Internet File System (CFIS).
