American amendment and addendum have almost the same meaning which can cause some confusion. Most people in the U.S think that the two are the same but the reality is that this is not quite so. These two terms, which are mainly used in the real estate industry, create confusion as most of the people are unaware of their exact meaning.

How are American amendment and addendum defined? Amendment can be defined as something that adds to the improvement of the first document. Addendum can be defined as some additional information added to the first document.

American amendment can also be said to be making an improvement or correcting an error that has crept into a document. Amendment also means making some alterations to the initial document, which could be adding supplementary information.

American addendum means adding some additional information to the existing ones. If the framers think that something has been left over, then they go for an Addendum.
When speaking of the American Constitution and amendment, it can be seen that only 27 amendments have been ratified after the signing of the original constitution. In America, the amendment procedure is included in Article V of the constitution.
A lot of addenda have been added to many documents in America regarding defence, airlines, energy, environment and a number of other documents.

In the case of real estate, an amendment is permissible only between the individuals who had signed the initial document. On the other hand, any individual can make an addendum.
