Self-Esteem vs Self-Confidence

In psychology, self-efficacy is your ability to be productive and complete certain tasks. However, you will not be able to successfully perform your daily tasks or even counter the stresses of your life if you are not equipped with other mental faculties like self-esteem and self-confidence. The reason why many become confused with these two concepts is because a person with high self-esteem will often have high self-confidence as well and vice versa. However, this is not true to all.

Self-confidence is defined as the firm belief of a reliance in someone or something, specifically to yourself. It is derived from the Latin word “confidentia,” which literally means “to have trust or faith.” It is also a type of self-assurance about your ability to succeed in almost anything. You are in the state of certainty as characterized by your display of calmness and lack of self-doubt. When you are self-confident, you are most likely sure of your ability or capability in doing almost anything in the general sense.

Coming from the Latin word “aestimare,” which means “to value” or “to appraise,” esteem or self-esteem is different because it pictures your own opinion about yourself. Most dictionaries define self-esteem as one’s feeling of self-worth, self-respect, self-belief, self-satisfaction, self-pride, self-complacency and even defining it as a certain kind of confidence in your own inherent abilities.

In simple terms, self-esteem is how you rate yourself. Most of the time, one will come to compare him or herself to another person. The trick here is how you compare yourself to them. If you believe that you are just as intelligent, lovable, successful, or attractive as them, then you will most likely have a good self-esteem. However, if you berate yourself as belonging to a lower level than the rest, then this will affect your self-esteem negatively. As a result, you may be thinking about pleasing others just to gain acceptance from them. You need to do this because you feel lowly of yourself. You are often depressed, and you always strive to become perfect. These are clear indications of low self-worth or self-esteem.

On the brighter side, when you have high self-esteem, you will be able to know how or when to say “No” or “Yes” whenever appropriate. You are also able to experience joy much easier. On top of it all, a person with good self-esteem is still able to feel good about his or herself regardless of physical appearance, status in society, fortune, or relational success.
