Fish is one of the most important resources worldwide. Aside from fish being an essential part of man’s diet, fish are also kept as pets or caught for recreation. There are more than 31,000 species of fish, and they can be found in most bodies of water, such as, lakes, rivers, oceans, and seas.
Salmon is a species of fish in the Salmonidae family. Salmon can be found along the coasts of the North Atlantic, the Pacific Ocean, and the Great Lakes of North America. Salmon is also raised and bred through aqua farming.
Some types of salmon are born in fresh water then travel to the ocean where they grow and return to fresh water to reproduce while others remain in fresh water all their lives. They have a very good olfactory memory and are known to return to where they were born to lay their eggs.
There are two major species of salmon:

Atlantic Ocean species:

Atlantic salmon which can be found in the northern rivers and on the coasts of the ocean.
Land-locked salmon which can be found in the lakes of North America and Northern Europe.

Pacific Ocean species:

Cherry salmon which can be found in the Western Pacific Ocean, Japan, Korea, and Russia.
Chum salmon which can be found in California, Japan, Canada, and Siberia.
Pink salmon which can be found in Alaska, Canada, Siberia, and Korea.
Sockeye salmon which can be found in California, Japan, Canada, and Siberia.
Coho salmon which can be found in Alaska, British Columbia, and Canada.
Chinook salmon which can be found in Canada and British Columbia, California, Alaska, and Russia.

Coho salmon can also be found in Japan, in fact, it is the state animal of Chiba, Japan. It is also known as Silver Salmon having dark blue backs and silver sides while in the ocean. As they return to fresh water, their sides become red and dark spots appear on their backs.
It is a game fish and is one of the most popular sporting fish in the United States. They can be fished from July to December using light fishing tackle. Compared to other salmon species, the Coho contains a high amount of fat.
The Chinook salmon, on the other hand, is the largest species of the salmon family. It is also known as Spring Salmon, Black Salmon, Blackmouth, Hook Bill Salmon, Chub Salmon, Quinnat Salmon, and King Salmon. It is very rare and expensive compared to other salmon species. It has a blue-green or purple back, silver sides, and black spots on its tail and body. They lay their eggs in deeper waters than most other salmon species.
