Difference Between Uber Eats and DoorDash

Uber Eats and DoorDash are the two most popular and the largest online food ordering platforms in the United States right now. Delivering foods and groceries has become one of the most lucrative side hustles for many. The startup costs are minimal if you already own a car or a bike. These two platforms have become a great resource for earning extra money. Both the platforms operate through their dedicated app which allows you to order food online and get it delivered right at your doorstep. At the core, both are just the same but there are some subtle differences between the two. Here is an Uber Eats vs. DoorDash breakdown of how each platform functions.

Uber Eats

Uber Eats was initially launched as part of the original Uber app for taxis. Going forward, Uber has developed a standalone app for Uber Eats – its on-demand food delivery service. Users can select from a huge selection of menus from the app and order their favorite foods from one of the many restaurants that are partnered with Uber. It started small, but over time has grown tremendously to serve more than 6,000 cities in over 45 countries worldwide.

DoorDash

DoorDash is a similar platform that allows customers to order food from a wide range of restaurants and have it delivered to their doorstep. DoorDash was founded back in 2013 with a simple mission: to enable every merchant to deliver. Today, DoorDash is the largest food ordering and delivery services in the United States with a 56% market share. The company expanded its offerings in 2020 to add grocery delivery to its portfolio. In 2023, DoorDash introduced Package Packup, a new package delivering service where a Dasher (DoorDash driver) picks up any prepaid package you want mailed and deliver it to a FedEx, UPS, or USPS location.

Difference between Uber Eats and DoorDash

Offerings

– While both are popular on-demand food delivery platforms in the United States, offering similar services, DoorDash has been partnered with a much wider selection of restaurants, including many local food joints and popular food chains. You can choose from over 300,000 local and national favorites across the U.S., Canada and Australia. Not just restaurants, DoorDash connects users with thousands of convenience stores, grocery stores, pet stores, and more.

Presence

– DoorDash has grown to serve more than 7,000 cities in the U.S., Canada and Australia. With a market share of 56%, DoorDash is the largest on-demand food delivery platform in the United States. Also, DoorDash has a significant presence in major U.S. cities, including Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. Uber Eats, on the other hand, serves more than 6,000 cities in over 45 countries worldwide. Uber Eats has a greater presence in other countries.

For Drivers

– While both the apps work almost the same, DoorDash has this great advantage over Uber Eats that allows DoorDash drivers (or Dashers) to schedule their working hours in advance. Uber Eats, on the other hand, does not offer advance scheduling for drivers. Uber’s interface is relatively better as it allows drivers to decline an offer they don’t like with just a single button click. With DoorDash, drivers have to hit at least four buttons in order to decline an offer.

Service and Delivery Fees

– While both the platforms charge service fees on top of the cost of order, DoorDash tend to charge slightly less service fees compared to Uber Eats. These fees may vary accordingly, depending on the location and the restaurant. However, when it comes to delivery fees, it tends to be slightly higher for DoorDash than it is for Uber Eats, but this can also vary depending on the order.
