Difference Between Tabs and Chords

Tabs vs Chords

Tabs and chords are mainly associated with music especially in relation to the guitar. Both the chords and tabs help in playing the guitar.

A chord is a collection of tones which is sounded together all at once. Tabs or tablature is a musical notation that indicates the fingering of the instrument rather than the musical pitches.

In a tab, there are six line grids, and each of them represent the guitar strings. The number that is written on these lines gives the instruction on how to play the frets. There is a great advantage with these tabs as it helps a player to exactly play the notes on the fret board rather than read the musical notations, which is a bit difficult.

The chords are also featured in charts but come in fewer details than the tabs. These chords provide guidance to the harmonic structure. If a person practices to play the guitar using the chord chart, then they can quickly play the instrument more quickly than using tabs.

While the tab tells the person where the finger has to be placed on the fret board, a chord is only the name of a chord that is being played such as G, E, or D. When playing tabs, it produces the melody of the song which means that the song is more recognized. When playing chords, you play a sound that usually accompanies a melody. This means that you will not recognize the song when playing the chords.

Tabs, the shortened form of tablature, are common for all string instruments like violin and lute.
