Difference Between Glass Ceiling and Concrete Ceiling

Glass Ceiling vs Concrete Ceiling

Glass ceiling and concrete ceiling are referred to the working atmosphere in an organisation. Both are almost the same. However, there are some differences between glass ceiling and concrete ceiling.

Glass ceiling and concrete ceiling refer to the barrier that limits the upward movement of qualified people, especially women. There is a stopping of progression of qualified people in an organization. Both glass ceiling and concrete ceiling means that women and other deprived class have lesser roles in an organization.

Glass ceiling is termed as a situation where the advancement of qualified persons in an organisation is withheld because of certain forms of discrimination.The most commonly known discriminations include racism and sexism. Glass ceiling also includes discrimination of the deaf, disabled, blind and aged. Glass ceiling is mainly related to the barrier that prevents women from climbing the ladder in an organisation.

Concrete ceiling is also a term that describes the barrier which blocks the advancement of qualified persons. When compared with Glass ceiling, Concrete ceiling is more tough to break.

Concrete ceiling is more a solid barrier than the glass ceiling. Both the glass ceiling and concrete ceiling are hindrances in the labour field. Sexual harassment is also part of both the glass and concrete ceiling but it is more seen in the latter.

Unlike glass ceiling, Concrete ceiling is denser and cannot be easily shattered. Concrete ceiling also restricts persons in the middle level.

Some of the glass ceiling and concrete ceiling barriers include different pay scales for the same work, ethnic, religious and racial discrimination, stereotyping and preconceptions of the role and ability of women.
