Difference Between LDS and Christian

LDS vs Christian

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), or Mormonism, is a form of Christianity which is distinct from traditional Christianity as it formed a new religious tradition. It started in the 1820s with similarities to Protestant Christianity but departed from traditional Christian teachings in the 1830s and 1840s.

Its founder, Joseph Smith, claimed that Christian churches have left and changed doctrinal truths and that Mormonism can restore these truths. He rejected the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and taught that man has the potential to become gods.

Although they share the other Christian denominations’ views on the atonement and resurrection of Jesus, and accept the Bible as Scripture, they have additional scriptures in the “Book of Mormon.” They also practice baptism and celebrate the Eucharist like other Christian churches.

Joseph Smith believed that the Bible has been corrupted and lost some books which are omitted by the Catholic Church and made a revised version of the Bible. He then gave the “Book of Mormon” equal status to that of the Bible. His teachings include three glorious heavens with a place for sinners, baptism for the dead, and polygamy although the latter has been renounced by the church but is retained by Mormon fundamentalists. He taught that God the Father and Jesus were separate beings with physical bodies.

He taught that Adam was God the Father and physically fathered Jesus, and that Jesus is a subordinate of the Father rather than His equal. Mormons believe that God the Father, like Jesus, was born once as a spirit and then again as man. He died and was resurrected and achieved godhood together with a wife called the Holy Mother who gave birth to spirits with Jesus as the firstborn of these spirits. Unlike traditional Christian churches who believe that God is omnipotent and omniscient, Mormons believe that God is governed by natural law.

Other Christian churches do not recognize LDS baptism, second anointing, additional scriptures, and Joseph Smith and Mormon leaders as prophets. Some regard Mormonism or LDS as a cult rather than a Christian church.

1.A Christian is a person who believes in Jesus Christ as the Messiah and follows His teachings while the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or LDS, is a form of Christianity which is different from other Christian churches.
2.A Christian believes that God is omnipotent and omniscient while the LDS teach that God is governed by natural law just like man.
3.The LDS regard its founder Joseph Smith and other church leaders as prophets while other Christian churches do not.
4.Both the Christian and LDS churches accept the Bible as the Scriptures, but the LDS have additional scriptures in the “Book of Mormon.”
5.A Christian practices monogamy while early Mormons practiced polygamy with a branch of Mormonism still practicing it today.
6.LDS believe that God the Father was also human with a wife who gave birth to spirits when they attained godhood after dying and resurrecting while Christians believe that God is divine and not human and does not have a wife.

  1. I don’t know where you got your data from but your way off in the beliefs of the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints. If you’d actually look at the http://www.lds.org website instead of relying on what your anti-Mormon preachers tell you you might find out what we actually believe. We are Christian in every way possible, more so than most of the sects out there. Christ is at the center of our beliefs, and Joseph Smith was his Prophet that restored the truth to the world. God the Father and Jesus Christ are glorified beings who are omnipotent and want us to follow them as we are Christ’s brothers and sisters.

    • mormon$ believe in a DIFFERENT jesus……their jesus was born after their ‘god’, who used to be a MAN, had sex with Mary (as a former man, he could not create….only organize!). there was no ‘virgin birth”.

their jesus atoned for mankind’s sin in the garden, NOT on the cross.

there is NOT ONE piece of archaeological evidence of ANY person, animal, metal or place mentioned in the book of mormon ever existed at the time and place they were mentioned in their ‘scriptures’! They have no maps because everything is made up.

their prophet (I spell it “profit”!) teaches there are people that live on the moon, dress like quakers and live about a thousand years. Brigham young taught that people live on the sun as well. they believe their god lives on a planet near a star called Kolob, and if you live right, YOU too, can become a god and have your OWN planet.

They SAY they do not practice polygamy, yet their CURRENT scripture (Doctrine & Covenants, section 132, REQUIRES it. They believe they will have eternal sex and produce spirit babies in their afterlife with multiple wives in their ‘celestial kingdom’ if they are worthy.

they do not believe in saving GRACE ~ only grace AFTER ALL YOU CAN DO…. joseph smith ‘translated the bible and edited himself into the wording….and added words like “adieu” (French??? give me a BREAK!!!).

There is PLENTY of information on the internet for those that wish to know the TRUTH….. I am one who was DECEIVED by this ‘religion’ and PRAY all will see their deceit and RUN RUN RUN!!!

      • WOW! Even as a non-Mormon, I find Peggy, to be wayyyyy out there! Where did she come up with this stuff? Laughable!

      • The LDS church does not teach that Adam was God, or that people live on the moon or the sun. You need to start over and get the facts from the source. Good grief. And when you say we believe in a “different” Jesus – of course. Your Jesus was dreamed up by a bunch of uninspired old fake priests 2,000 years ago at the Nicene conference headed by a sun worshipper. Try reading the scriptures for once. How clear the text is when it says Stephen saw God the Father and his Son standing next to him. And Jesus says He doesn’t know when His 2nd Coming will be, but his Father does. And Jesus says He only does that which He sees His Father do. And the Father speaks from Heaven and identifies Jesus as his Son when Jesus was baptized. and so on. The doctrine of the Trinity is not a pronouncement by any prophet of God, but a made-up fantasy by goofballs who had too much wine. Those guys argued forever about the nature of God, and Constantine picked the version he liked, and that is where your Trinity doctrine came from. Not from revelation by the real God. So yes, we worship a different Jesus. We worship the Jesus who has revealed himself through a living prophet.

    • The person or persons who wrote the above who believe LDS are in error. One day this is a promise to all others who believe not the Truth, the Way, or the Life, will have to try to prove to my God that He had it wrong. I my self am a Born Again Christian, though I can’t prove to Mormons that I have it right, ” there is Only One God, and He was in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. He is Spirit. He doesn’t have a physical body, but made Himself known through His Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible or The Word is not in error but is the Truth. People have always tried to disfigure the Bible, but they can’t. God’s Word is more alive now as it was 1,000’s of years ago. That is why the Word of God caused so much trouble for people who try to twist the truth. God the Father created every thing through the Word. The Word became Flesh. He is my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, my Master my best friend. Who ever as the Son as life, whoever does not have the Son of God, does not have life in them.

      • Oh I Doobie for got to say that if I had more than one wife by the end of the week, I would be warn out and have to sharpen my pencil to use it again for the following week lol.

  2. This data is nonsense its nothing about my church we mormons dont believe we can become gods we dont allow polygamy at all

    • When it says:”He taught that Adam was God the Father and physically fathered Jesus” that is not true. We Mormons believe that Adam was his own person. And we believe that Heavenly Father is the father of Jesus both spiritually and physically.
And Kurt, we do believe we can be Gods and Goddess if we live righteously. And we have achieved it.

Any questions on the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints please go to http://www.lds.org or http://www.mormon.org.

    • then you don’t know your own scripture and history. sad, very sad!

  3. 1. Mormons believe in being subject to the laws of the land, so even though we believe in polygamy, we do not practice it because it is illegal.

    2. The idea that Adam is God the father comes from a misunderstanding of something Brigham Young said in a talk he gave. Adam is the father of all mankind only in the sense he was the first man on earth. Our scriptures teach that Adam “walked and talked with God in the Garden of Eden” before the Fall. So clearly, our doctrine does not teach that Adam is God the father of Jesus and all that.

    3. Mormons reject the doctrine of the Trinity. That doctrine was one of many conjured up by a body of religious leaders who, it is important to note, believed all revelation from God had ceased. These uninspired religious leaders argued about their doctrines of God for months. Finally Constantine, a pagan, told them to pick one and be done with it. That is not how true religious doctrine is established. The doctrine of the Trinity is confounded when we consider how Jesus refers to his Father. “I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.” That scripture alone tells any reasonable, honest person that the Father and the Son are two different individuals. When the Savior was baptized, Jesus was in the water, a voice came from Heaven stating Heavenly Father was pleased with Jesus, and the Holy Ghost descended upon him. Three distinctly different entities. The Father loved the world, so he gave his Son. When Christ was on the cross, he cried unto his Father asking why He had forsaken him. This was the moment when the Father withdrew his constant spiritual presence from Jesus so that he was completely on his own. After he was resurrected, he told Mary not to touch him because he had not yet ascended to his Father. These and many other scriptures destroy the man-made, incomprehensible doctrine of the Trinity.

    4. Most Christians are understandably offended that Mormons believe they can become gods. However, this doctrine actually is well-supported in the King James Bible and is not so radical when you consider what Jesus said about his followers. It is late and I do not have time right now to properly address this subject. Hopefully, the following tidbits will help a little.
    (a) Followers of Jesus will sit on his right hand and will be given all that Jesus and the Father have. Think about that!
    (b) The Old Testament says we are gods and sons of God. Jesus also referred to that scripture.
    (c) We are children of God, and children can grow up to be like their parents.
    (d) To say we can never become gods is to deny that our Father in Heaven has the power to do whatever he desires to elevate and bless his children.
    (e) The savior defined what a god is to Joseph Smith: He speaks of those who have been faithful in living the Gospel of Jesus Christ and says, “Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them.” All this is made possible by the saving grace of the Savior, not because we have worked our way to heaven. Even though Jesus has pointed to our potential to reach a level of godhood (as He defines it), we will never be equal to the Father or the Son. Jesus lived a perfect life and atoned for our sins and broke the bands of death. Interestingly, he said “The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he SEETH the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.” Is it possible that in all the eternities before this world, that our Father in Heaven once walked in mortality on another world and atoned for the sins of those people? Something to ponder. Something to pray about.

  4. Most likely if any of us wanted to get accurate information from a cardiologist instead we would not go ask our neighbor who is an expert plumber. Same way ask any LDS church goer what they believe in. Then you will know the truth. Not anti Mormons, they are like a plumber.

  5. Whomever wrote this piece about LDS beliefs is smoking something really good, ’cause it’s completely made up. If you go to the lds.org site you could actually read their stance on everything, and it’s quite clear that we’re not being accurate here in their belief description/understanding

  6. If you believe you can come back as a god. Then why hasn’t anyone done that? Since the beginning of time, how many billions of people have died? And if you can explain all the parts of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Then I guess He’s really not much of a God.

    • Mormons don’t believe they “come back as a god”. That’s reincarnation which is not part of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They believe God the Father loves His children and has a plan whereby they can grow up and be just like Him. Is it so strange to think a Father as powerful as God can raise up His children to be just like Him? Isn’t it a bit foolish to put limits on what God has planned for His children when the scriptures tell us “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”?
