Sherbet and sorbet are frozen desserts. Most people get confused between Sherbet and Sorbet. They think sherbet and sorbet are synonyms. Though sherbet and sorbet are both frozen desserts, they have slight differences.

What is sherbet and sorbet? Sorbet is made of water, iced fruit, wine and chocolate. Sherbet is simply a cold drink which is made from rose hips, cherries, licorice and spices.

Now let’s look at some of the differences between Sherbet and Sorbet. Well, one of the basic differences between the two frozen deserts is that sherbet contains milk, or some other type of fat. Sorbet does not contain any type of dairy product. Sherbet may also contain egg.

While sherbet can be called a dairy-based dessert, sorbet can be termed as a fruit-based dessert.

Sorbet is known as ice, in technical terms, and is termed as a garnish. Well, Sorbets are sometimes referred to as the ‘first iced dessert’. Sorbet has a granular texture because of its icy nature. On the other hand, sherbets look creamy, as they have added fat in them.

When looking at their etymology, sherbet has been derived from the Turkish word ‘serbet’, and sorbet has been derived from the Persian word ‘sharbat’.

In flavors as well, sherbet and sorbet come in different flavors. Sorbet comes in mango, raspberry, lemon, orange and cassis flavors. Sherbet may come in lime, strawberry and orange flavors.

In Turkey, sherbet is believed to have healing effects. It is usually given after childbirth or circumcision. In England, sherbet is a type of fizzy powder that is made from bicarbonate of soda, sugar and tartaric acid.
