Difference Between Nikon Coolpix P7000 and P7100

Nikon Coolpix P7000 vs P7100

The Nikon Coolpix lineup is a middle offering between simple point and shoot cameras and full-on digital SLRs. It offers a bunch of control options without being too overwhelming. Two Nikon Coolpix cameras are the P7000 and P7100, with the latter being the newer and more improved model over the former. The biggest difference between the P7000 and P7100 is the articulated screen. Although they both have the same screen, that of the P7100 is able to extend out and can be rotated to different positions. The main reason behind the articulated screen is to give the shooter the best possible view of the subject even at awkward angles. You can shoot worm’s eye and bird’s eye view photos without needing to crouch or stand on a platform.

Another difference between the P7000 and the P7100 is the extra dial on the front; which is probably the biggest discriminating factor between the two cameras from the front. Both cameras have a control dial on the back, which acts as the main dial. The front dial of the P7100 is often used as the sub but the roles of the two can be interchanged. Many people though think that the additional dial is superfluous and all of the basic tasks can be achieved without it.

The additions to the P7100 make it slightly heavier than the P7000. These cameras are not light when compared to point and shoot cameras, and the extra weight added in the P7100 is not really that noticeable when you carry the camera around.

When it comes to the formats they support, there is a slight difference. The P7000 supports three video formats when it comes to videos; AVCHD, MPEG4, and H.264. The P7100 dropped support for the first two and used H.264 solely.

Aside from those mentioned above, the P7100 and P7000 are virtually identical. They both have the same sensors, lenses, and even the processor that manages it all. The P7100 is not really a different camera but just an incremental step from the P7000.

Summary:

  1. The Coolpix P7100 has an articulated screen while the P7000 does not
  2. The Coolpix P7100 has another dial that is not available on the P7000
  3. The Coolpix P7000 supports more video formats than the P7100
  4. The Coolpix P7100 is a bit heavier than the P7000
